I am writing to share that we have\u00a0finalized\u00a0a\u00a02026-2027\u00a0Business Plan and Budget\u00a0that\u00a0will guide us as we navigate a second year of profound shifts in Canada’s postsecondary landscape.<\/p>\n

Our\u00a0financial plan\u00a0for the year ahead is built on bold strategies that\u00a0will\u00a0optimize\u00a0our workforce and operations, refocus our academic programs and accelerate revenue diversification and growth, while achieving a balanced budget through a multi-year financial strategy and prudent use of reserves.<\/p>\n

Broad policy changes at the federal level continue to cause significant changes to postsecondary enrolments nationwide, and Niagara College is not immune. Our collective efforts and strategic investments in marketing and recruitment are bearing fruit on the domestic side – we are among the fastest-growing colleges in the province domestically, and all signs point to our highest-ever domestic intake in the year ahead. The difference in international enrolments, however, is stark, as illustrated below. While international students made up more than half of our total enrolment just three years ago, they will constitute only 10 percent of our overall enrolment in 2026-2027.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Earlier this year we\u00a0joined all Ontario colleges in welcoming the\u00a0provincial\u00a0government’s introduction of\u00a0a\u00a0new funding model\u00a0that\u00a0will bring stability and predictability to our longer-term financial outlook, but our significant challenge in the present is addressing this\u00a0substantial\u00a0drop in international demand.<\/p>\n

Aligning<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>our Workforce and Operations<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with Enrolments<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recognizing the disparity in how enrolment shifts are affecting our organization – with some schools experiencing enrolment declines of more than 50 percent — we introduced a Selective Incentive Program (SIP) in February that provided a voluntary exit pathway for employees in the areas hit hardest by enrolment decreases. While 11 individuals opted into the program, further workforce reductions will be necessary as we adapt to changing workforce needs and a significant revenue gap – both of which are driven by dramatic enrolment changes.<\/p>\n

Reductions\u00a0that have been\u00a0identified\u00a0within the\u00a0administrative employee group will be prioritized in the near term, while\u00a0in the coming weeks,\u00a0we follow the\u00a0processes\u00a0for support staff and faculty outlined in the respective collective bargaining agreements. We\u00a0will share further details\u00a0of\u00a0reductions,\u00a0including the number of employees impacted, when these processes conclude.<\/p>\n

Growing Enrolments<\/strong><\/p>\n

Key to growing enrolments and achieving long-term financial stability is accelerating the development of new programs and creating capacity where there is strong student and employer demand. Nowhere is this commitment more significant than in the construction of our transformational Health Education Building at the Welland Campus that will create 800 new student spaces in our high-demand health programs annually, which we hope to be open in Fall 2027.<\/p>\n

In addition,\u00a0we are excited to\u00a0introduce seven\u00a0new programs\u00a0this year\u00a0shaped by\u00a0emerging labour market needs, including\u00a0our trailblazing\u00a0Defence Systems Engineering\u00a0Technology programs.<\/p>\n

Growing Alternative<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Revenue<\/strong><\/p>\n

Revenue diversification and growth is also the mandate of our new Partnerships and Enterprises\u00a0(PE)\u00a0division,\u00a0which will implement strategies and operations that\u00a0leverage\u00a0the success of our enterprises and global partnerships\u00a0within a single portfolio.\u00a0PE\u00a0will\u00a0be focused on advancing\u00a0entrepreneurial activities across the College\u00a0and growing customized training locally and globally.<\/p>\n

We will also harness the momentum of our Together Campaign, which enters its third year, after achieving record fundraising in its first two years, in support of projects that build capacity in growth areas and expand student access to our programs.<\/p>\n

Opportunities for further discussion and dialogue<\/strong><\/p>\n

During challenging times, it is particularly important to create opportunities for connection and open conversations. My hope is to meet with as many of you as possible over the summer and early fall. I will be working with the Vice Presidents to attend divisional meetings to provide updates on the year ahead, hear your feedback and ideas, and answer any questions you may have. start-of-term at NC: Orientation programming and social events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College is gearing up for an exciting start to the Spring term. The first six weeks will feature a range of events and activities designed to help new and returning students settle into #ncLIFE, build meaningful connections, and learn about the supports available to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orientation Day<\/strong> will take place on <strong>Friday, May 8,<\/strong> offering students the opportunity to explore campus, learn more about their programs, and meet the teams who will support them, ahead of <strong>classes beginning on<\/strong> <strong>Monday, May 11<\/strong>. Start-of-term programming will continue with a range of sessions and social events designed to introduce students to key resources, on-campus activities, and the broader NC community.<\/p>\n<p>Employees are encouraged to review the activities planned for the first six weeks to help guide and support students as they transition into the Spring term.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pre-Orientation Programming<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/engagement\/orientation\/preorientation\/\"><strong>April: Virtual Pre-Orientation sessions (in collaboration with International)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These free virtual sessions\u00a0offer easy access for students who may not yet be in the Niagara region or are unable to attend in person. Topics include timetable selection, communication tools like Brightspace and MyNC, the NC Engage app, a student services series, and more, along with open Q&A sessions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/engagement\/orientation\/prepweek\/\"><strong>May 5-7: KickSTART (Welland Campus only)<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nDrop-in, in-person sessions designed to help students become familiar with campus, complete pre-orientation steps, and ease their transition into college life. Programming includes Brightspace\/MyNC\/NC Engage sessions, campus tours, Student ID pick-up, locker registration, and opportunities to explore campus spaces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/engagement\/transition-peers\/\"><strong>Transition Peers (Volunteer Program)<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThis peer-to-peer program connects new students with experienced student mentors in the two weeks leading up to the term and during the first four weeks of the semester. Transition Peers support students by answering questions, helping them navigate resources, and easing the transition into NC Life.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently 14 Transition Peers confirmed for the Spring term, with recruitment and training updates planned over the summer in preparation for Fall. their industry’s provincial regulator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">On April 15,\u00a0 Maureen Boon, Registrar and CEO of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, visited the College’s Welland\u00a0 Campus to speak\u00a0 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/alliedhealth\/program\/massage-therapy\/\">Massage Therapy<\/a> students about the governing body of the profession they will soon join. Her presentation offered an inside look at the CMTO’s role in the industry and provided a forum for students to ask questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">“We sincerely appreciate the visit from Maureen Boon, Registrar and CEO of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, for engaging with our students and faculty on the regulations, standards, and responsibilities that uphold public trust and advance the Massage Therapy profession,” said Michelle Thibault, Associate Dean, School of Allied Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">“The strong engagement and genuine interest demonstrated by our students made the visit especially impactful, highlighting the importance of connecting education with professional practice and the shared commitment to excellence that defines Niagara College and the profession.”<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/alliedhealth\/program\/massage-therapy\/\">Massage Therapy<\/a> is a three-year advanced diploma accredited by the Canadian Accreditation Council for Massage Therapy Programs.\u00a0 Based at the Welland Campus, home to NC’s\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/alliedhealth\/massageclinic\/\">Student Massage Therapy Clinic<\/a>, where students develop clinical assessment skills and practice massage therapy on public clients in a safe, supervised environment. students gain ground with design challenge win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Landscape Technician students at Niagara College are proving that they have a green thumb for community impact.<\/p>\n<p>A class of second-year students from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/program\/horticulture-technician-landscape-coop\/\">Horticulture Technician – Landscape<\/a> program recently won the Come Alive Outside Design Challenge, which will see their creative vision transform the schoolyard at James Morden Public School in Niagara Falls into a natural oasis.<\/p>\n<p>The Come Alive Outside Design Challenge connects postsecondary students with landscape professionals to reimagine schoolyards as biodiverse ecosystems and “living laboratories.” Its goal: to move children away from screens and back into nature. While the initiative was launched over a decade ago, the project at James Morden school marks its first venture in the Niagara region.<\/p>\n<p>Students secured their victory with the highest total score overall; they outshined their competitors with the highest points from industry professionals judging the competition, as well as a first-place vote from the James Morden community.<\/p>\n<p>For NC Dean of Business and Environment Evan DiValentino, the competition win was a testament to the hands-on experience that has become a cornerstone of the program. He noted that while NC students often work on campus “living labs,” this project was an opportunity to bring their knowledge and skills into the heart of the community.<\/p>\n<p>“Our students do incredible work on campus, but now we get to change a schoolyard in a way that will benefit students for decades,” said DiValentino. “Extending what happens in our classrooms into the community is very meaningful. It always comes back to education: they are creating the environment for future students to learn, play, and develop.”<\/p>\n<p>The winning submission was a result of a class collaboration which allowed students to plant seeds for their future careers.<\/p>\n<p>School of Environment and Horticulture Professor Carrie Zimmerman helped support Come Alive Outside’s venture into the Niagara area and was inspired to integrate the challenge into her Landscape Design Build class as a major project. Students worked collaboratively on the challenge during Fall term. After connecting with the James Morden community in November, they spent countless hours in the studio and submitted their entry on the last day of classes.<\/p>\n<p>“Students are learning design, landscape installation and project management, so the Come Alive Design Challenge brought everything together into a real-world experience for them,” said Zimmerman. “Students collaborated and tackled it together as a class and it gave them a taste of how fast-paced the industry is. We were ecstatic to learn that we won.”<\/p>\n<p>The challenge kicked off in November and tasked participants with revitalizing an outdoor area at the school that lacked shade, seating, and privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Rochelle Tkach, Grade Seven Teacher at James Morden Public School, said they were excited to have such strong community partnerships caring about their students, and to see the landscaping students hard at work to making their outdoor dreams come true.<\/p>\n<p>“This project is a wonderful example of what’s possible when schools and community partners learn together,” said Tkach. “When we saw the design, we immediately felt the care and creativity behind the work. The Niagara College team listened closely and incorporated so many of our ideas, resulting in a design that will enrich how students learn, play and connect with the outdoors.”<\/p>\n<p>“The students’ engagement with the James Morden community and the design challenge process was truly outstanding. The designs the Niagara College team submitted for the Come Alive Outside Design Challenge showed a great deal of thoughtfulness and creativity, while clearly demonstrating that they listened to the needs of the school community, board of education, and the guidance of the landscape professionals working with them,” said Scott Wentworth, advisory board member of Come Alive Outside, Senior Landscape Architect with Wentworth Landscapes, who is also a new member of NC’s Horticulture and Landscape Program Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n<p>“They should feel extremely proud of their efforts and design – the industry professionals and the James Morden community certainly are.”<\/p>\n<p>NC’s design submission focused on creating spaces for inclusive, nature-based play. Their winning design – which targeted all five senses – divided the yard into four distinct nature zones: “Mustang Meadow,” a rejuvenation of the sports field; “The Corral,” a dedicated outdoor classroom for hands-on learning; “Mustang Market,” an extension of the existing vegetable garden; and “The Play Paddock,” an enhanced natural playground to boost motor skills.<\/p>\n<p>“Transforming the schoolyard into an inclusive, nature-based play and learning space will give all James Morden students the chance to explore, create, and learn in meaningful ways,” noted the class in their design submission. “Ultimately, nature offers the most flexible and inspiring space for students to grow, and this design ensures they can fully experience it.”<\/p>\n<p>For students like Sonja Grcar, the win was the perfect capstone to her time at NC.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s really exciting that we won, to know that I was part of the actual design process and that our ideas will be coming to life,” said Grcar, who has already landed a job in the landscape design field. “I came to NC to be a landscape designer. All the connections I made through this program have been really valuable.”<\/p>\n<p>While her classmate Conner Taylor is more passionate about the construction component of the program, rather than design – students gain experience in both – he valued the opportunity to make a difference in the community.<\/p>\n<p>“We got hands-on experience with actual clients and got to listen to their concerns,” said Taylor. “I enjoyed interacting with the kids and knowing that we’re helping to improve their playground in a way that will help them enjoy being outdoors.”<\/p>\n<p>The project is now ready to move from the drawing board to the dirt. Landscape Ontario will begin working with DSBN facilities, partners and volunteers to launch phase one of the build. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with future Niagara College students returning to the site to help bring the winning design to life.<\/p>\n<p>Based at the College’s Daniel J. from a new partnership between Niagara College and the <a href=\"https:\/\/walkerwoodfoundation.org\/\">Walker Wood Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through a generous $80,000 donation to the College’s <a href=\"https:\/\/donate.niagaracollege.ca\/together-campaign\/\">Together campaign<\/a>, the Foundation has established the Walker Wood Scholarships for Health supporting students across the Health Sciences Division.<\/p>\n<p>The Walker Wood Foundation funds scholarships and bursaries at educational institutions throughout Canada, geared especially towards students with much to offer, but not necessarily the financial means to pursue their dreams.<\/p>\n<p>A total of eight $2,500 scholarships will be offered in the 2026-2027 school year.<\/p>\n<p>Priority will be given to students in the following programs who demonstrate financial need, academic excellence (75% GPA or higher) and involvement in extracurricular activities: Advanced Care Paramedic; Community Pharmacy Assistant; Dental Assisting; Dental Hygiene; Dental Office Administration; Massage Therapy; Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant; Paramedic; Pharmacy Technician; Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Personal Support Worker; and Practical Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>“Financial support through scholarships is paramount as we attract and welcome more students to our health programs over the next few years to help fill the growing demand for health professionals,” said Gord Arbeau, Vice President, Advancement. “We sincerely thank the Walker Wood Foundation for generously supporting Niagara College students as they pursue their studies.”<\/p>\n<p>In close collaboration with community partners and care providers, NC is significantly expanding its health education capacity to help address Ontario’s workforce shortages in frontline healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>A cornerstone of this commitment is the future <a href=\"https:\/\/donate.niagaracollege.ca\/health-education-building\/\">Health Education building<\/a> at the Welland Campus, a transformative addition to the Applied Health Institute that is expected to open in August 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The two-storey, 75,000 square-foot expansion is designed to directly respond to regional and provincial healthcare demands by increasing training capacity, enhancing community care, and modernizing learning environments. Once open, the expansion will enable Niagara College to graduate an additional 800 students from its health programs each year – that means more nurses, paramedics, personal support workers, dental technicians and others health professionals to meet the immediate need.<\/p>\n<p>“This is a pivotal moment in Niagara College’s history as we expand our health education footprint on campus and welcome a record number of students across our programs,” said Dr. Sin\u00e9ad McElhone, Dean, Health Sciences. “The new Walker Wood Scholarships for Health will directly support these students as they train for careers that will help strengthen Niagara’s skilled healthcare workforce.”<\/p>\n<p><em>Making college education more accessible is a key priority for Niagara College, and a pillar of the Together campaign, which aims to expand scholarships and bursaries so that every student can access support. Patterson campuses in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
