Members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Office of the Fire Marshal, and Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario took part in specialized electric vehicle (EV) safety training at Niagara College this spring.<\/p>\n

NC’s Alternative Fuel Safety<\/a> training program equips first responders with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely respond to incidents involving electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The program, launched in 2025 thanks to a $450,000 commitment from RBC Foundation<\/a>, continues to strengthen emergency response preparedness across Ontario.<\/p>\n

NC’s Andrew Troyan, Motive Power Technologist, developed and led a customized, hands-on training course tailored to first responders and fire investigators to help them safely respond to EV-related incidents involving battery fires and toxic gases at collision scenes. The two-day training course helped responders understand the unique hazards associated with high-voltage EV systems.<\/p>\n

“Participants learned how to safely remove high-voltage batteries on a pickup truck and smaller passenger vehicle, identifying disconnect points and understanding how battery locations vary between vehicle models,” explained Troyan.<\/p>\n

Troyan had the help of Motive Power<\/a> program student Bailey Melnychuk, who has been doing her co-op with NC. Melnychuk demonstrated a variety of scan tools for participants that are commonly used within the automotive industry to diagnose vehicle issues and view live data – tools her professors have strong emphasized in the classroom.<\/p>\n

“Diagnostic tools are especially important for first responders who need to quickly assess the status of the batteries when arriving at a scene involving an electric or hybrid vehicle,” said Melnychuk.<\/p>\n

Using knowledge from her electrical and scan tool courses, she answered first responders’ questions about how vehicles communicate with diagnostic tools.<\/p>\n

For Melnychuk of Airdrie, Alberta, moving to Niagara for school was a big part of the appeal, and her co-op helped her build community in a new place.<\/p>\n

“I just wanted to chase a dream I’ve had for a while and see where it takes me,” said Melnyhuk. “What better place than the Niagara Region, home to the unofficial Eighth Wonder of the World?”<\/p>\n

Some highlights of the program for Melnychuk have been the support from her instructors and representing women in the trades.<\/p>\n

“They treat students like family, and they want nothing but the best for us. No student is ever afraid to ask for help,” she said. “The automotive field is still very male-dominated, but it has been an honour to be part of the small group of women learning in the automotive garage and to help inspire young girls. I’ve had prospective students ask if the program is right for women, and I can honestly say it’s not only welcoming, but a place where you can be yourself.”<\/p>\n

While the training focused on emergency response and vehicle safety, Melnychuk has her sights set on a similarly fast-paced environment: a career in motorsports, be it in the pit-lane or behind the wheel of a high-performance vehicle.<\/p>\n

“I hope it will allow me to travel and see different parts of the world, that would be an absolute dream,” she said.<\/p>\n

Melnychuk says that even in motorsports, high-performance EV’s are beginning to gain traction. Understanding the risks associated with EVs is becoming increasingly important.<\/p>\n

“There most certainly is a connection between the two,” said Melnychuk, referring to EV safety and motorsports. “The racing class of F1 has begun to test out all electric formula cars. Understanding how electric vehicles work and the dangers behind them is important not just for mechanics, but for everyone else within the race team, and for those who work on the track, from standby medics, engineers, and even the driver themselves.”<\/p>\n

joys and challenges of being queer in a small town. Filmed in Alberta, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories, the film follows LGBTQ2S+ people and allies as they prepare for their local Pride celebrations. Organizing in church basements, classrooms and around kitchen tables, they take on a conservative town council that won’t fly a rainbow flag and bend some rules to create a safe space for youth to come out. supporting new pathways to learning, skills development, and opportunity through the Empowering Through Skills Program (ESP-05).<\/p>\n<p>From May 4 to 15, a Niagara College Institute for Global Education and Training team worked alongside local partners in Tanzania to deliver specialized training and strengthen collaboration across key areas, creating two weeks of impactful activities.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Workshop on Marketing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The first week of the collaboration was dedicated to a series of workshops in Dodoma, bringing together partners including Tanzanian Folk Development Colleges (FDCs) in Bigwa and Munguri, and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) such as Justice in the Society for Transformative Change (JUST) and the Young Strong Mothers Foundation (YSMF).<\/p>\n<p>Led by Esteban Navarro, NC’s Global Education Projects, Project Manager, and Mary Bantug, Seneca’s International Partnerships, Manager, the workshops focused on strengthening institutional capacity in areas such as stakeholder engagement, recruitment, community event planning, and social media marketing strategies.<\/p>\n<p>“Together with our partners, we continue supporting sustainable growth and learner success through applied education and collaboration,” said Navarro. “We also learn from their experience and perspectives, and that shared learning strengthens our work at Niagara College.”<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Train-the-Trainer Culinary Sessions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>At Bigwa FDC, NC’s Culinary Subject Matter Expert Chef Erik Mauke delivered Train-the-Trainer culinary sessions focused on adapting recipes to the Tanzanian context, exploring recipe costing, and sharing culinary techniques and ingredient substitution strategies.<\/p>\n<p>The five-day training program brought together Bigwa FDC cookery instructors to build on lesson plans developed in 2024 by Chef Isa Mottiar, when NC became the first Canadian college under the ESP umbrella to conduct Train-the-Trainer sessions in the region, strengthening local expertise and instructional capacity. These efforts also contributed to the development of two short courses designed for local colleges: Vegetarian and Vegan Food and Baking Essentials.<\/p>\n<p>The experience was marked by a strong collaborative approach, with participants working collectively to address challenges such as equipment and infrastructure limitations through locally available solutions.<\/p>\n<p>“Personally, this experience pushed me to grow as an educator, as it strengthened my adaptability, patience, and ability to deliver high-level training in unfamiliar environments,” said Mauke. “The warmth and openness of our Tanzanian partners also reminded me that food is a universal language–it brought us together. The impact of this initiative extends well beyond my time there, as the instructors are now equipped to transfer that knowledge to their students and continue building capacity within their institutions and communities. I return to my classroom in Canada with a broader perspective, new stories to share, and a renewed appreciation for the role education plays in building strong, connected communities.”<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lasting change<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One participant who reflects the impact of ESP-05 is Monica Faustine, a student at Bigwa FDC. She later completed her placement at Arc Hotel in Morogoro, where she applied her training in a professional kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Her performance led to a job offer at the hotel, where she is now employed in the cookery department. This opportunity has transformed Monica’s life and her family’s.<\/p>\n<p>“I always loved seeing chefs in their uniforms, and it was always my dream to become like them,” said Monica. “When you hear of an opportunity like the one from ESP, don’t be afraid: believe in yourself and show up.”<\/p>\n<p>Monica’s journey reflects the purpose of ESP-05: turning potential into opportunity, and opportunity into lasting change.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>About the Empowering Through Skills Program (ESP-05)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), ESP-05 is implemented by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan). This four-year initiative (2022-2026) is focused on providing alternative pathways to education, employment, and entrepreneurship for students and marginalized groups, particularly women.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with Tanzania’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Niagara College and Seneca Polytechnic work closely with local FDCs and CBOs.<\/p>\n<p>Through these collaborative efforts, Niagara College is taking important steps to support the advancement of sustainable education and drive positive change. From June 8 to June 13, Niagara College will shine a spotlight on approximately 7,000 soon-to-be graduates as it celebrates its Class of 2026 with its largest Spring Convocation ceremonies to date.<\/p>\n<p>NC’s Welland Campus will transform into a hub of celebration from Monday, June 8 to Saturday, June 13 as the College hosts 12 ceremonies – at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily – each dedicated to specific areas of study.<\/p>\n<p>“Spring Convocation is the absolute highlight of the academic year at Niagara College – the ultimate celebration of student success, dedication and resilience,” said NC President Sean Kennedy. “We are incredibly proud of our Class of 2026 and look forward to welcoming our graduates and their families to the Welland Campus to mark this special milestone, as well as our honorary diploma and distinguished alumni recipients, who embody the passionate, community-driven spirit we hope to inspire in all our graduates.”<\/p>\n<p>Two graduating students – Nashwa Higazy (St. Catharines) and Alleeya Guthro (Welland) – will be presented with prestigious Governor General’s Academic medals, for scoring the highest average in a degree and diploma program, respectively. This year’s spring Convocation will also honour Bob Martin, a prominent community leader from Niagara’s horticulture sector, with an honorary diploma, and trailblazing Class of 2020 graduate Celeste Anderson with a Distinguished Alumni Award.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1624887\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1624887\" class=\" wp-image-1624887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/06\/Nashwa-Higazy.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"347\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1624887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nashwa Higazy<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Governor General’s Silver Academic Medal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>St. Catharines resident Nashwa Higazy will be the recipient of the Governor General’s Silver Academic Medal, recognizing her exceptional 94.93% average in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/ba-hons-human-resources\/\">Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources<\/a>) degree, program.\u00a0Higazy will also receive her graduate certificate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/project-management\/\">Project Management<\/a>. She previously graduated from NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/business-administration-human-resources\/\">Business Administration – Human Resources<\/a>\u00a0advanced diploma program in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>A mother of six, she balanced full-time studies and a three-year student position at NC’s Global Business Development department, where she contributed to student engagement, global education, organizational development, and international projects.<\/p>\n<p><em>She will be recognized with the award on Friday, June 12 (3 p.m. ceremony).<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Governor General’s Bronze Academic Medal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_1624884\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1624884\" class=\" wp-image-1624884\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/06\/Aleeya-Guthro.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"382\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1624884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aleeya Guthro<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Welland native Alleeya Guthro will be this year’s recipient of the Governor General’s Bronze Academic Medal, recognizing her outstanding 98.67% average in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/communityservices\/program\/recreation-therapy\/\">Recreation Therapy<\/a>\u00a0program.<\/p>\n<p>After initially studying visual arts, she found her true calling at NC by merging her creative spirit with a desire to help others. During her studies, she completed two impactful placements supporting individuals with disabilities and those with acquired brain injuries, which broadened her understanding of therapeutic recreation.<\/p>\n<p>Guthro’s success as a student and aspiring recreation therapist is a testament to her resiliency, having overcome her life-long struggles with severe anxiety to thrive in her college program.<\/p>\n<p>“My experience at Niagara College has been truly life changing,” she said.<\/p>\n<p><em>She will be presented with her medal on Tuesday, June 9 (3 p.m. ceremony).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While the Governor General’s Silver and Bronze Academic Medals will recognize students with the highest overall GPA in a degree and diploma program, Dean’s Awards will be presented to graduating students with the highest GPA in their school of study<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Distinguished Alumni Award<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_1624885\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1624885\" class=\" wp-image-1624885\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/06\/Celeste-Anderson.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"406\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1624885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Celeste Anderson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Toronto resident Celeste Anderson, originally from Winnipeg, is the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award. After returning to school at the age of 30, Anderson graduated from NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/program\/tourism-management\/\">Tourism Management – Business Development<\/a>\u00a0program in 2020. Despite a cancer diagnosis and surgery during her final term, she graduated with a 97.52% average, to earn the Dean’s Academic Award.<\/p>\n<p>Today, she is the CEO and Co-founder of Digital Sports Administration Inc., where she manages esports tournaments, gaming activations, and live events across North America, including gaming programming at the Canadian National Exhibition. A trailblazer in the gaming industry, she was Canada’s first female professional gamer, won the reality television series <em>King of the Nerds<\/em>\u00a0in 2013, appeared on <em>Conan<\/em>, and currently serves as Director of Business Operations for the Women of Halo executive team.<\/p>\n<p><em>Anderson will be presented with the award on Friday, June 12 (3 p.m. ceremony).<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Honorary diploma in Environment and Horticulture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_1624889\" style=\"width: 195px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1624889\" class=\" wp-image-1624889\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/06\/Bob-Martin.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1624889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob Martin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>NC will honour Lincoln resident Bob Martin for his decades of exceptional leadership in the horticultural sector. As the former General Manager of Martin Farms Ltd., Martin grew the family-owned commercial greenhouse operation into a major Ontario retail supplier and launched their beloved “Veggie Guy” brand, earning multiple Canada Blooms Plant Supplier of the Year awards, and the Loblaw Floral Innovator of the Year award.<\/p>\n<p>A passionate industry advocate, he has served on numerous boards, chaired Flowers Canada, and received the Flowers Canada Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. From June 8 to June 13, Niagara College will shine a spotlight on approximately 7,000 soon-to-be graduates as it celebrates its Class of 2026 with its largest Spring Convocation ceremonies to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NC's Welland Campus will transform into a hub of celebration from Monday, June 8 to Saturday, June 13 as the College hosts 12 ceremonies - at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily - each dedicated to specific areas of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Spring Convocation is the absolute highlight of the academic year at Niagara College - the ultimate celebration of student success, dedication and resilience,\" said NC President Sean Kennedy. \"We are incredibly proud of our Class of 2026 and look forward to welcoming our graduates and their families to the Welland Campus to mark this special milestone, as well as our honorary diploma and distinguished alumni recipients, who embody the passionate, community-driven spirit we hope to inspire in all our graduates.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two graduating students - Nashwa Higazy (St. Catharines) and Alleeya Guthro (Welland) -will be presented with prestigious Governor General's Academic medals, for scoring the highest average in a degree and diploma program, respectively. This year's spring Convocation will also honour Bob Martin, a prominent community leader from Niagara's horticulture sector, with an honorary diploma, and trailblazing Class of 2020 graduate Celeste Anderson with a Distinguished Alumni Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-p-large\"><strong>Governor General's Silver Academic Medal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Catharines resident Nashwa Higazy will be the recipient of the Governor General's Silver Academic Medal, recognizing her exceptional 94.93% average in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/ba-hons-human-resources\/\">Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources<\/a>) degree, program. Higazy will also receive her graduate certificate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/project-management\/\">Project Management<\/a>. She previously graduated from NC's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/business-administration-human-resources\/\">Business Administration - Human Resources<\/a> advanced diploma program in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mother of six, she balanced full-time studies and a three-year student position at NC's Global Business Development department, where she contributed to student engagement, global education, organizational development, and international projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>She will be recognized with the award on Friday, June 12 (3 p.m. ceremony).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-p-large\"><strong>Governor General's Bronze Academic Medal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welland nativeAlleeya Guthro will be this year's recipient of the Governor General's Bronze Academic Medal, recognizing her outstanding 98.67% average in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/communityservices\/program\/recreation-therapy\/\">Recreation Therapy<\/a> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After initially studying visual arts, she found her true calling at NC by merging her creative spirit with a desire to help others. During her studies, she completed two impactful placements supporting individuals with disabilities and those with acquired brain injuries, which broadened her understanding of therapeutic recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guthro's success as a student and aspiring recreation therapist is a testament to her resiliency, having overcome her life-long struggles with severe anxiety to thrive in her college program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"My experience at Niagara College has been truly life changing,\" she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>She will be presented with her medal on Tuesday, June 9 (3 p.m. ceremony).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Governor General's Silver and Bronze Academic Medals will recognize students with the highest overall GPA in a degree and diploma program, Dean's Awards will be presented to graduating students with the highest GPA in their school of study<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-p-large\"><strong>Distinguished Alumni Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toronto resident Celeste Anderson, originally from Winnipeg, is the recipient of this year's Distinguished Alumni Award. After returning to school at the age of 30, Anderson graduated from NC's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/program\/tourism-management\/\">Tourism Management - Business Development<\/a> program in 2020. Despite a cancer diagnosis and surgery during her final term, she graduated with a 97.52% average, to earn the Dean's Academic Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, she is the CEO and Co-founder of Digital Sports Administration Inc., where she manages esports tournaments, gaming activations, and live events across North America, including gaming programming at the Canadian National Exhibition. A trailblazer in the gaming industry, she was Canada's first female professional gamer, won the reality television series <em>King of the Nerds<\/em> in 2013, appeared on <em>Conan<\/em>, and currently serves as Director of Business Operations for the Women of Halo executive team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anderson will be presented with the award on Friday, June 12 (3 p.m. ceremony).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-p-large\"><strong>Honorary diploma in Environment and Horticulture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NC will honour Lincoln resident Bob Martin for his decades of exceptional leadership in the horticultural sector. As the former General Manager of Martin Farms Ltd., Martin grew the family-owned commercial greenhouse operation into a major Ontario retail supplier and launched their beloved “Veggie Guy” brand, earning multiple Canada Blooms Plant Supplier of the Year awards, and the Loblaw Floral Innovator of the Year award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A passionate industry advocate, he has served on numerous boards, chaired Flowers Canada, and received the Flowers Canada Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
