students develop real-world sustainable tourism solutions through BWR global classroom learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College students gained a global perspective on sustainable tourism over the fall and winter terms through hands-on learning experiences that connected the classroom with industry expertise from across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>School of Hospitality and Tourism students engaged with Oda W. Andreasen, founder and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/golocal.fo\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">GoLocal<\/a> – a Faroe Islands-based tourism company dedicated to preserving the environment, respecting wildlife, and supporting the local communities – who shared her commitment to regenerative tourism.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the project, Tourism Management – Business Development Diploma students developed a Code of Conduct for GoLocal clients, along with a visitor education strategy. Meanwhile, Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (Hospitality) students aligned United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with GoLocal’s success stories, enabling Andreasen to incorporate this material into her marketing strategies.<\/p>\n<p>“This collaboration with GoLocal provided students with opportunities to create solutions for a real-world business,” said School of Hospitality and Tourism Professor Agnes Nowaczek, who led the initiative. “Whenever possible, I aim to offer experiential learning and industry networking experiences to our students, as I am deeply convinced this type of learning lasts and transforms them on a deeper level.”<\/p>\n<p>The global classroom learning experience was made possible through the Fare Green Project — an international collaboration between NC’s Be World Ready (BWR) program and partners dedicated to niche tourism and hospitality in Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.<\/p>\n<p>“One of BWR’s pillars is providing students with global learning experiences in the classroom through collaboration with international guest speakers, students and organizations,” said Maxine Semple, Director, Cultural and Global Engagement. “These opportunities allow students to work with global partners on real world scenarios, supporting the development of their cultural humility. She offers small-group tours of no more than eight guests.<\/p>\n<p>“My message to students was to always think about animal life and nature first, as they cannot speak for themselves,” said Andreasen. “It is also crucial to involve local communities and ensure they benefit both financially and culturally from tourism by supporting local food, guides and artisans, and engaging more deeply with local culture. I have worked in tourism on Mykines since before it became a well-known destination, and my goal is to make sure it never loses what makes it special.”<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on her first online experience engaging with students, Andreasen said that reaching them across the Atlantic carried meaning beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>“Personally, I am happy to have shared my story with the next generation and hope it has made a difference and inspired them to think in a regenerative way in the future,” said Andreasen. “I am very impressed with the NC students’ work and their thoughtful advice on how to promote my regenerative focus and sustainability. It really made me feel that my efforts were worth it.”<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Student experience<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For the students, the experience was a unique opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting.<\/p>\n<p>“Working on the GoLocal project allowed me to put the concepts we have studied into practice, which helped me better understand the challenges and strategies involved in global tourism,” said Juan Pena. “Learning about how waste is managed in remote locations, how to interact with local people, and how to educate tourists so they do not cause any environmental damage, was very helpful.”<\/p>\n<p>Their reflections also highlighted the personal and professional growth they gained.<\/p>\n<p>“At the beginning of the project, it felt quite challenging, especially knowing that our work would be presented to an external audience and could potentially contribute to Go Local,” said Christian Sun.<\/p>\n<p>“As the project progressed, I was able to shift that initial pressure into motivation, pushing myself to grow. Andreasen’s strong vision for sustainability and her dedication to integrating it into her business were truly inspiring.”<\/p>\n<p>The complexity of the tourism industry also emerged as a key insight from students’ reflections.<\/p>\n<p>“I gained insight into what professionals in the tourism industry prioritize and how they make decisions,” said Tzu-Le Chiang. “The real world is more complex than we initially thought, with many factors to consider and rules to follow. id=\"caption-attachment-1609808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lori Ravensborg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two years of study came together in a final director’s cut featuring students’ talents in acting, voice, movement, cinematography, editing, green screen work, and screenwriting.<\/p>\n<p>“We installed the building blocks for acting,” said Program Coordinator Lori Ravensborg in the auditorium. “Our actors learned resilience, teamwork and collaboration, and we’re so proud of them.”<\/p>\n<p>NC’s Acting program emphasizes the art of listening and responding authentically, working off your partner, and having a point of view.<\/p>\n<p>This year’s crop of actors demonstrated versatility and authenticity across a wide range of work, from drama and comedy to stunt performance and commercial pieces. Reflecting on the past 18 years, Doyle noted that the program was ahead of its time, especially given today’s reliance on self-tapes and digital auditions.<\/p>\n<p>The other unique benefit of NC is the actor’s proximity to students in related disciplines. Coordinator of NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/programs\/bachelor-of-science-nursing\/\">Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing<\/a>\u00a0program, Odreman has officially unveiled Odreman’s Nursing Scholarship and Education Team (ONSET), a dedicated stream for his various forms of scholarly works and teaching and learning opportunities with a focus on academic output.<\/p>\n<p>“ONSET provides students at Niagara College, students from other institutions, and independent researchers, an opportunity to collaborate with me on studies and other scholarly activities,” said Odreman, PhD, MScN-Ed, RN, CCNE, CCSNE, who was recently awarded the prestigious Silver Leadership Excellence Award for Faculty from Colleges and Institutes Canada.<\/p>\n<p>All ONSET projects focus on using simulation and experiential learning to optimize how nursing students develop clinical competence – from technical skills to\u00a0 confidence and teamwork.<\/p>\n<p>“Ultimately, the goal across all projects is to identify evidence-based educational strategies that better prepare students for real-world clinical practice,” said Odreman.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Critical skills<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Three NC nursing students in their second year of the BScN program are currently involved in ONSET, helping Odreman move forward ONSET’s research goals: Christian Baltus (co-investigator), Isabelle Klapatiuk (communications director) and Brayden Robichaud (volunteer coordinator). Master of Nursing student Ryan McNally, who is currently completing his graduate studies at the University of Toronto, is also involved as a research co-investigator helping ONSET with research activities related to external healthcare and professional organizations.\u00a0Within their ONSET roles, the students have the opportunity to not only get involved with Odreman’s research studies but mentor other students who become involved with ONSET’s research activities.<\/p>\n<p>Odreman noted that all NC nursing students have an opportunity to get involved in ONSET research activities or projects. They may apply to become paid research assistants for funded studies or volunteer as research assistants for pilot studies.<\/p>\n<p>For Christian Baltus, who has been a part of ONSET since its first research study, it has been rewarding to watch it evolve into the ONSET team and is proud of what they are accomplishing together.<\/p>\n<p>“Being part of research has been incredibly rewarding to me as a nursing student because it has allowed me to grow beyond the classroom and develop skills that directly translate into healthcare practice. Through these experiences, I have strengthened my communication, collaboration, leadership, and critical thinking abilities while working alongside students and professionals from different disciplines,” said Baltus.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that his career goal is to become a nurse who provides high-quality patient care and contributes to improving healthcare systems and patient outcomes through innovation, education, and research.<\/p>\n<p>“Being involved in research has shown me how evidence-based practice can shape the future of healthcare and improve interprofessional collaboration,” he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Road to ONSET<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Odreman knows the value of research first-hand. It has increasingly played a central role in his career. As an ICU clinical educator and as a post-secondary professor, he has led 10 studies – both scholarly and research – from his clinical work.<\/p>\n<p>Early on, his work was grounded primarily in clinical practice and teaching, where his priority was supporting student learning and delivering high-quality education.<\/p>\n<p>Through these experiences, he noticed recurring questions about how students learn best, how\u00a0 performance in clinical settings\u00a0 could be improved, and how educational strategies translate into practice.<br \/>\n“These questions naturally led me toward research as a way to explore and address the challenges I was seeing in both clinical and academic environments,” said Odreman. “Over time, research evolved from being a complementary activity to becoming a core pillar of my professional identity. It has allowed me to move beyond observation and intuition to systematically investigate, evaluate, and improve nursing education practices.”<\/p>\n<p>It was this shift that led him to develop of a more intentional and structured program of research, ultimately resulting in the creation of ONSET.<\/p>\n<p>“While research was not always the central focus of my career, it has become an essential part of how I contribute to the profession, by generating evidence, informing practice, and supporting the development of future nurses,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>Odreman noted that he wanted to launch ONSET to bring intentional structure, coherence, and visibility to what had already become a growing and interconnected body of scholarly and research work.<\/p>\n<p>“After years of engaging in clinical practice, teaching, and leading various research initiatives, it became clear that my work was no longer a collection of individual projects, but rather part of a larger, integrated program of research. Establishing ONSET was a way to formally recognize and organize that evolution,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>“What I hope to accomplish through ONSET is the creation of a sustainable, impactful program of nursing education research–one that not only advances knowledge, but also directly informs teaching practice, strengthens leadership capacity, and contributes to improved educational and clinical outcomes. It is also an important way of providing opportunities for nursing students to learn and integrate themselves in the work of research.”<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Leading studies \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ONSET includes a mix of both short-term and long-term projects – which\u00a0 Odreman noted, supports ongoing productivity while\u00a0 building toward sustained, larger-scale research outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Presently, ONSET has two research projects underway.<\/p>\n<p>The first, “<strong>Evaluating the Effectiveness of Escape Room Simulation on Registered Nursing Student Leadership Development in Interprofessional Teams: A Randomized Controlled Trial<\/strong><strong>“<\/strong>\u00a0sets out to evaluate the effectiveness of an escape room-based simulation in developing leadership skills among RN students.<\/p>\n<p>The primary outcome of this study will be the development of RN leadership competencies including delegation, communication, prioritization and team coordination. The study will generate high-quality evidence on the effectiveness of simulation-based strategies for strengthening RN leadership while collaborating closely with practical nursing, PSW, paramedic and other students in health programs.<\/p>\n<p>Odreman and his team recently completed a pilot study that examined how escape room design elements such as puzzle complexity, role-based tasks, time limits, team composition and discipline mix influenced collaboration competencies in inter-professional student groups compared with traditional classroom teaching. Preliminary data suggested that groups that went through escape room competencies exhibited richer task-related communications, faster convergence on shared plans, and more explicit role negotiation, which reflected team functioning and communication.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, groups that went through traditional case-based experience showed a decrease in learner opportunities to self-organize, negotiate roles and coordinate actions.<\/p>\n<p>BScN student Isabelle Klapatiuk, Communications Director for ONSET, who was involved with this study, values the experience.<\/p>\n<p>“ONSET has provided me with learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. I’ve been able to develop new skills as a researcher, and I’ve grown in ways I didn’t anticipate when I first joined,” she said. “As a nursing student and future nurse, evidence-based practice is foundational to everything we do and being actively involved in research, rather than simply applying it, has deepened my understanding of why research matters. Part of my career goal is to continue allowing evidence to inform my practice at every stage, and ONSET has given me a strong foundation to do that.”<\/p>\n<p>BScN student Brayden Robichaud noted how participating in the study and being a part of the ONSET research team has been beneficial, allowing him to further develop different sets of skills that are critical for the future.<\/p>\n<p>“My future career goals are to be a strong nurse that works alongside evidence-based practices and innovative approaches. As healthcare is always changing and improving, being a part of this change and doing my part as a future nurse is essential to this growth within the healthcare system and interprofessional competencies,” said Robichaud.<\/p>\n<p>“This is also a very rewarding group to be a part of as it has showed me what I am capable of within myself, that I may have doubted before.”<\/p>\n<p>ONSET is also conducting a research study, in collaboration with a hospital in Toronto,\u00a0 involving the training of nurses using Simulation-Based Teaching and Learning Techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Both are currently in the design phase.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Recent studies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A few projects have already been completed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>“Self-Confidence and Modulation of Performance Anxiety Through Simulation-Based Learning”<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0study looked to evaluate the effects of simulation-based training using virtual reality and haptic gloves on nursing students’ self-confidence and performance anxiety during clinical skills assessments using Attentional Control Theory as a theoretical framework. Preliminary data suggest\u00a0that when using virtual simulation to train a complex nursing skill, students experience increased self-confidence\u00a0while decreasing anxiety, which\u00a0affects their performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>“Hand Dexterity and Proficiency: Simulation-Based Training of Nursing Students”<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0study evaluated nursing students’ learning curve and knowledge retention when withdrawing liquid medication, measuring time taken during the initial and retention phases to assess the effectiveness of training. The data showed a steady decline in time taken per attempt, highlighting the effectiveness of this simulation-based training. Targeted training, as implemented in this pilot study, confirms that skill retention and medication administration efficacy can significantly enhance nursing students’ hand-eye coordination and dexterity.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>“Virtual Reality Simulation Prebrief: Promoting Psychological Safety and Clinical Reasoning”<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This research study aimed to determine the extent of differences in the experience of psychological safety and in the performance of clinical judgement across three pre-briefing techniques.\u00a0 This study found that as collaboration and interaction between the learner and educator during a pre-briefing activity increase, the learner’s support for learning and confidence-building also increases. This study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Simulation in Learning.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Vital impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Odreman noted that the research conducted through ONSET is important for the healthcare sector.<\/p>\n<p>“It directly addresses how we prepare future nurses to deliver safe, high-quality care in increasingly complex clinical environments,” he said. “By focusing on evidence-based, simulation-driven, and experiential learning approaches, ONSET examines how students develop clinical competence; not only in technical skills, but also in critical areas such as decision-making, communication, and performance under pressure. They helped prepare Rekker for the competition through blind wine tastings and experimenting with new cocktails during meal service at Benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Rekker received the news while travelling in Italy. Back at Benchmark Restaurant, her fellow staff members were watching the closing ceremonies live on screen.<\/p>\n<p>“I called Victor and he said the whole kitchen erupted with cheering,” said Rekker. “The texts started rolling in to congratulate me and seeing how excited everyone was made me feel so loved and supported. I am so very proud of both of them, not only for the outcome, but for their growth as stylists and young women.”<\/p>\n<p>“She was super supportive and uplifting throughout the competition and definitely gave us the preparedness we needed to place gold and silver!” said Capinding. With just seven hours, Thiessen created a package design, flyer and website from a short brief on the product and company.<\/p>\n<p>Thiessen’s gold medal win comes during her third year in NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/graphic-design\/\">Graphic Design<\/a> program. Her academic journey began at university before she decided to make the switch.<\/p>\n<p>“I quickly realized that I wanted my career to include my creative work, so I transferred to Niagara College,” said Thiessen. “I thought it was cool that NC’s Graphic Design program featured a lot of printing presses and physical design work, which isn’t something you see at other schools. But knowing I’m the best in Ontario is such an amazing feeling.”<\/p>\n<p>While at NC, Thiessen gained work experience at a real estate brokerage, with the College’s Marketing and NC Student Administrative Council, and currently as a designer with the Research and Innovation division.<\/p>\n<p>“In the future, my goal is to be a full-time freelance designer, and I’m already building up my client base in my spare time. Lammers and McLaren won bronze in the landscape design competition.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Bronze medal wins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Professor and mentor Carrie Zimmerman said first-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/program\/horticulture-technician\/\">Horticulture Technician<\/a> students Lammers and McLaren impressed judges with their craftsmanship, professionalism, and grit. Despite breaking his clavicle just days before the competition, Lammers still competed (with his arm in a sling), helping the duo earn a bronze medal for their landscape design.<\/p>\n<p>“They were the only team in which the judges offered them a job working for his company,” said Zimmerman. “Unfortunately for the judge, Brady and James already have fantastic co-op’s this summer.
