href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2025\/12\/18\/alumni-of-excellence-mark-fisher-advances-sustainable-water-policy-to-protect-canadas-freshwater\/\">2025 Alumni of Excellence honouree<\/a> and President of the Canada Water Agency, Mark Fisher for a campus visit exploring the College&#8217;s innovative programs and learning enterprises. Patterson Campus (Niagara-on-the-Lake) that support experiential learning across various disciplines. Joining Fisher on the tour were Gord Arbeau, Vice-President, Advancement; Evan DiValentino, Dean, Business &amp; Environment; Jana Boniferro, Director, Alumni Relations; and Kerry Kennedy, graduate of the Ecosystem Restoration program and spouse of NC President Sean Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exploring sustainability and experiential learning on campus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The tour began in NC&#8217;s Sustainability Office, where Fisher observed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/program\/environmental-management\/\">Environmental Management and Assessment program<\/a> student interns working on projects ranging from waste management to phragmite control. Sustainability Manager Taryn Wilkinson provided insight into some of the College&#8217;s sustainability efforts, including recent initiatives to address water quality issues in a local tributary.<\/p>\n<p>From the Sustainability Office, the group moved to the College&#8217;s Culinary Wing, where they observed students at work in the culinary labs and viewed creations from the Baking and Pastry Arts program. Examples were shared of student-led initiatives and applied learning projects, including the on campus United Way Community Garden, where students play an active role in managing and supporting food production, as well as students who have launched their own ventures in the agriculture and horticulture sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bridging research and practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the tour, Fisher shared highlights from his professional work in environmental advocacy, water stewardship, and sustainable agriculture. Travelling from Williams Lake, B.C., she met with award recipients and shared her story, speaking about the lasting impacts of residential schools and the importance of Orange Shirt Day, Every Child Matters and ongoing Truth and Reconciliation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>In total, 18 students in attendance received awards, including four recipients of the <a href=\"https:\/\/donate.niagaracollege.ca\/help-students\/dr-phyllis-webstad-indigenous-scholarship\/\">Dr. Phyllis Webstad Indigenous Scholarship<\/a>. Each recipient of this award received $1,000 during the 2025-2026 academic year to help ease the financial burden of postsecondary education.<\/p>\n<p>The College&#8217;s Advancement team continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/donate.niagaracollege.ca\/help-students\/dr-phyllis-webstad-indigenous-scholarship\/\">welcome donations for this scholarship fund<\/a>, with a long-term goal of expanding support to every Indigenous student who attends the College.<\/p>\n<p>The celebration also welcomed members of NC&#8217;s Indigenous Education Management Circle (IEMC), along with community partners and supporters. Sustainability Plan &#8216;<em>A time for action&#8217;<\/em> set a bold expectation.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, we&#8217;re demonstrating that commitment clearly through measurable impact and a stronger vision for the future of Niagara College.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pleased to share our <a href=\"https:\/\/isu.pub\/1JvfTEB\"><strong>2025 Sustainability Plan Year in Review<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/S8esB0gBA0s\">video<\/a> to mark this milestone.<\/p>\n<p>As you browse the report, you will note that parts of the Sustainability Plan have progressed quickly, while others are taking shape more slowly &#8211; but all of it is essential. We will continue moving forward, building positive momentum for our campus community and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Collective action, one of the Plan&#8217;s guiding principles, is integral to our success. That means active participation from everyone on campus to make progress toward our goals and targets.<\/p>\n<p>Every effort, big or small, helps drive change. discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>In honour of the day, students and employees are invited to a <strong>hybrid<\/strong> session from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.: <em>Positive<\/em> <em>Space &#8211; Creating 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusive and Affirming Environments.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Organized by Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Centre for Academic Excellence, the session offers participants an engaging and reflective introduction to gender and sexual diversity, drawing on key concepts such as terminology, pronouns, gender identity, and the impact of heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>The session encourages deeper understanding of lived experiences within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/sustainability\/students\/bioblitz\/\">Spring Bioblitz<\/a> on Saturday, April 11.<\/p>\n<p>The free, family-friendly event will welcome community members to join NC students and faculty to capture biodiversity at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake &#8211; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/sustainability\/livinglab\/\">UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bioblitz is among our favourite community events at Niagara College because it turns curiosity into real research,&#8221; explains Taryn Wilkinson, Manager of Sustainability at NC. &#8220;Our volunteers help us identify and catalogue everything from tiny insects to larger mammals, which is valuable data that helps us track changes in our ecosystem over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Participants can choose from sessions led by local experts on birding, biodiversity, plants, benthic and macroinvertebrates, an Indigenous knowledge exchange, and more. Lunch will be provided for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/sustainability\/students\/bioblitz\/\">registered<\/a> participants.<\/p>\n<p>With forecasts calling for another hot, dry summer, Katie Bristow, Sustainability Program and Outreach Coordinator, says it will be interesting to see how this winter&#8217;s cold, snow, and rain shape the species recorded during the Bioblitz.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the great things about Bioblitz is that we have data going back over 11 years that can help NC students view wildlife trends in connection with weather changes,&#8221; said Bristow.<\/p>\n<p>Bristow says that while daylight remains consistent from year to year, a prolonged winter has the potential to disrupt the timing of insects and caterpillars that birds rely on to feed their young.<\/p>\n<p>Delainey Stevenson, a student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/program\/environmental-technician\/\">Environmental Technician (Co-op)<\/a> program, was drawn to NC after attending her first Bioblitz three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Passionate about the environment, Stevenson said she first learned about the Bioblitz while searching online for outdoor events after moving from Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had never been to the campus before and didn&#8217;t even know a campus like this existed,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>During her first Bioblitz, Stevenson said one activity stood out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve enjoyed the birding walks each year, but the Benthics have to take the win by far. That part specifically is what drew me to attend NC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Benthics are small organisms like tiny bugs and creatures that live in bodies of water like lagoons and wetlands. At the Daniel J. Patterson Campus, NC students have the unique opportunity to study these organisms right in their own backyard. students apply design skills to inspire sustainable promotional material for Be World Ready"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College Graphic Design students stepped into the role of professional designers through a real-world challenge, applying their creativity and classroom learning to a project with concrete outcomes for Be World Ready (BWR).<\/p>\n<p>The extracurricular initiative brought six students together for a three-week BWR Design Charrette last fall. Students were invited to respond to a live design brief by researching and presenting sustainable product concepts, with the goal of inspiring BWR to create promotional items and gifts that are thoughtfully and culturally appropriately sourced.<\/p>\n<p>Working closely with BWR as their client, students explored product concepts across nine themes, including travel accessories, gifts, electronics, safety items, personal hygiene, and food, among others. Each theme included eight or more product recommendations that met defined sustainability criteria and could be sourced ethically and as locally as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the students&#8217; contributions, BWR replaced its non-recyclable swag boxes with aluminum, Canadian-sourced tins&#8211;one tangible outcome of the Design Charrette.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything BWR does is for students and with the values of contributing more positively to our local and global communities,&#8221; said Maxine Semple, Director of Cultural and Global Engagement. &#8220;That means thinking about where the items we give away and purchase are coming from and whether they match the values we want to align ourselves with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BWR program prepares students for global success through cultural and global engagement experiences&#8211;inside the classroom, as in the Design Charrette; on campus; in the community; and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with BWR, whether as a guide while taking our students to design studios and galleries in New York City, or bringing BWR into my courses,&#8221; said School of Media Professor Alicia Tyson, who led the project. &#8220;Our students were successful working both individually and as a group. This Design Charrette also reflected current trends, as it was conducted on Zoom&#8211;a platform that has become an industry standard and how I work with my local and international clients.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Student experience<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For the students, the Design Charrette was a unique opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting. Their reflections highlight the learning, teamwork, and professional growth they experienced:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This experience strengthened my skills in client and team interaction, research, critical thinking, and presenting ideas clearly to an audience&#8211;skills that will be valuable in the future.&#8221; &#8211; Namit Singh<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea of using my skills to give back to the college was very enticing. This experience strengthened my teamwork and communication skills and helped build my confidence in decision-making.&#8221; &#8211; Ej Kovich<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are often told in the classroom that graphic design is a highly collaborative field. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we experienced first-hand that we can achieve a desired outcome that meets a client&#8217;s goal within a short period of time.&#8221; &#8211; Gabriela Palomo<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to get involved in this project to gain experience working with other designers in a collaborative, real-world setting. It reinforced how essential clear communication is and how important it is to discuss ideas effectively as a team.&#8221; &#8211; Issac Porcaro<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really enjoyed this experience. It helped me grow as a designer and feel more confident in my work.
