Students in Niagara College’s\u00a0<\/span>Broadcasting – Radio Television and Film<\/span><\/a>\u00a0program were back\u00a0behind the camera this summer for another world-class sporting event.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As White Oaks Resort and Spa in Niagara played host to the\u00a0<\/span>World\u00a0Junior\u00a0Squash Championships<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from July 20 to 31, a crew of NC students took to the court and behind-the-scenes to capture a full-scale production\u00a0featuring some\u00a0of the\u00a0world’s\u00a0best under-19 squash players as they battled for the\u00a0World Championship title.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NC program coordinator and broadcasting pro, Dutch Vandenberg, said the\u00a0two-week\u00a0production was especially demanding.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The crew did\u00a0amazing\u00a0and I am very proud of the product we created,” said Vandenberg.<\/span><\/p>\n

The student crew\u00a0included third-year TV students\u00a0Brendan Beilman,\u00a0Brock Mead,\u00a0Gianluca Malvaso,\u00a0Brandon Finikin,\u00a0Kenzie Kehoe, and second-year TV student\u00a0Christian Middleton.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The six students\u00a0took on\u00a0professional-level roles in directing, camera operation, audio, replay, robotics, streaming, and technical support to bring the championship action to audiences,\u00a0streaming it\u00a0live from around the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beilman, who\u00a0is from\u00a0Edmonton,\u00a0worked alongside Vandenberg as the lead hand and technical assistant for production, as well as lead audio.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beilman said he loved the challenge of wearing multiple hats, bringing his NC experience from other productions like\u00a0Ontario Parasport Games, Minto Cup,\u00a0Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, and\u00a0Canadian Boccia Championships.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The experience you gain working on these types of productions is invaluable and I feel fortunate to have gotten to work on them while taking this program,” said Beilman, who recently worked\u00a0on\u00a0the World Cup in Toronto, an opportunity he received through the college.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Brock Mead\u00a0of Hamilton and\u00a0Gianluca Malvaso\u00a0of Niagara Falls had\u00a0a\u00a0unique\u00a0vantage point during the competition:\u00a0working\u00a0front and center at the feature glass court at White Oaks,\u00a0where transparent walls offered a 360-degree view of the gameplay.\u00a0Mead served as director and Malvaso as the main camera operator.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Directing a world championship was a career\u00a0goal realized\u00a0for Mead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Being able to broadcast two historic championship wins in both the men’s and women’s solo\u00a0matches, and\u00a0being able to make sure that everyone from those athletes’ home countries can watch them compete is so special,” said Mead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a camera operator,\u00a0Malvaso\u00a0said the unique field of play made the experience unlike any other sport\u00a0he’s\u00a0covered.\u00a0In sports like basketball, volleyball and soccer, camera operators are typically positioned in the stands or high on scaffolding\u00a0rather than right alongside\u00a0the\u00a0action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I had never been so close to the game action with a camera as I was over the course of these two weeks,” said\u00a0Malvaso. “Having the camera at a lower angle was really, really cool.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A lifelong lover of sport, both as an athlete and spectator, Malvaso was new to squash.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I was amazed with it, from the speed of the game to the athleticism of all who were competing\u00a0–\u00a0especially being up\u00a0close\u00a0where I was with the camera,” said Malvaso.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A standout moment for Malvaso came during the single and doubles finals and semi-finals. As the stakes intensified,\u00a0so too\u00a0did the athletes’\u00a0visible emotions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“There were a few times the athletes were right in front of\u00a0me\u00a0and I got to capture it,” said Malvaso. “In the Men’s Singles Final, when the player who won sealed the deal, he saw the camera, looked directly at it and held up his finger as a celebration, presumably as a symbol of finishing first and winning the tournament.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Capturing the key moment earned Malvaso plenty of praise from the production team, who congratulated him on getting the shot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vandenberg says the livestreams, featuring the\u00a0College’s\u00a0logo, amassed impressive viewership numbers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“There were lots of great storylines and views for this cool event,” said Vandenberg, noting that a clip shared by the\u00a0prime\u00a0minister of India garnered more than 40 million views.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The number of views is a source of pride\u00a0for\u00a0Malvaso.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“One, because our work as a team of students reached that many people… and two, because Dutch trusted\u00a0<\/span>us<\/span><\/i>\u00a0as the people to run this production.”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>When an extraordinary new resident - Balakrishna, an Indian elephant - arrived in the town of East River, Nova Scotia, in 1967, no one was more in awe of the creature than young Winton Cook, who became inseparable from his mammoth new friend. Using painterly animation, photographs and home-movie treasures, <strong><em>Balakrishna<\/em><\/strong> transmits the wistfulness of childhood memories, while evoking themes of friendship and loss, and issues of immigration and elephant conservation.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\r\n\t\r\n\t<figure class=\"image d tb none\" >\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/edi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/125\/2026\/07\/balakrishna_storyart_16x9.jpg\" alt=\"An elephant in the middle of a circus ring surrounded by people\" \/>\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\t\r\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sensitive Content Warning:<\/strong> This film has content that may be sensitive for some viewers. Perhaps they are helping transform education or student support through new and innovative practices?<\/p>\n<p>Help us elevate your contributions and those of your team members and submit your nominations by <strong>Thursday, October 15, 2026<\/strong> at <strong>5 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This award recognizes\u00a0<strong>up to three individuals or teams<\/strong>\u00a0from the NC community who have made a remarkable difference by reimagining how we engage students, enhance learning, or support student success.<\/p>\n<p>Whether through a bold new idea or a fresh take on everyday practices, this award honours the innovative spirit that drives excellence and helps share those successes across the College.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Each winning project will receive $2,500 in seed funding<\/strong>\u00a0to continue growing its impact.<\/p>\n<p>The funds can be used in one of two ways: to enable one or more contributors to attend a conference or another professional development opportunity or, to advance their innovation in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about timelines, dates and deadlines, FAQ and past recipients:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/innovationaward.\">www.niagaracollege.ca\/innovationaward.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attend an info session this summer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE) will offer sessions for you to learn more about the application process. the team <\/em>– employees, students, alumni, as well as family and friends – and all cycling levels are welcome.
