and Reconciliation: Learning and reflecting together at NC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>September 30 is the <strong>National Day for Truth and Reconciliation<\/strong>, a day for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people across Canada to recognize and remember the harmful legacy of residential schools and honour the children who never returned home, Survivors, their families and affected communities.<\/p>\n<p>This month, NC will launch its new Indigenous Education Strategy, a college-wide roadmap for advancing Reconciliation and Indigenization at Niagara College. The strategy will help empower all areas of NC to walk alongside one another on this journey.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout September, employees and students are encouraged to deepen their understanding of Truth and Reconciliation through learning opportunities, resources and events.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some ways the NC community can learn, reflect and take part:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Wear orange on September 30<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The NC community is encouraged to wear an orange shirt to campus on Sept. 30 in recognition of <strong>Orange Shirt Day<\/strong> and the message that Every Child Matters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every Child Matters&#8221; T-shirts are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/niagarawellandstore\/product\/ots-every-chld-mtt-orang-sm---560473-1\">available for purchase through the NC Bookstore<\/a>. One hundred per cent of shirt sale proceeds will be donated to Indigenous educational charities.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Honouring Survivors and those who never came home<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On Sept. 30, the <strong>Every Child Matters flag<\/strong> at both NC campuses will be lowered to half-mast and the NC Button at both campuses will also be illuminated orange to honour the children who never made it home from residential schools, as well as Survivors and their families.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Community Events<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The City of Niagara Falls is hosting a flag raising and lowering ceremony and will illuminate the Falls orange on Sept. 30. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/niagarafalls.ca\/recreation-culture-and-community\/history-and-heritage\/truth-and-reconciliation\/\">city&#8217;s website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Explore opportunities to learn<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There are many opportunities throughout September for the NC community to learn more about residential schools, Truth and Reconciliation and the experiences of Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Lunch and Learns<\/strong><br \/>\nThroughout September, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation will host various webinars which invite participants to UN-learn the myths of colonial history in Canada. These sessions are open to the public and are free to attend. NC recognizes the importance of providing space for reflection, support and care.<\/p>\n<p>Residential School Survivor supports, including the <strong>National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419<\/strong>, are available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/indigenouseducation\/studentresources\/\">Indigenous Education website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students can also access support through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hwas\/\">Student Health and Counselling Services, <\/a>including NC&#8217;s Indigenous Counsellor.<\/p>\n<p>Employees can access support through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/humanresources\/employees\/efap.\">Employee and Family Assistance Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Truth and Reconciliation is an ongoing journey<strong>.<\/strong> This September, the NC community is encouraged to take time to learn, listen, reflect and consider how we can each contribute to Reconciliation in meaningful ways.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people across Canada to recognize and remember the harmful legacy of residential schools and honour the children who never returned home, Survivors, their families and affected communities. The agreement focuses on facilitating student mobility, improving transfer efficiency and enhanced collaboration to support student success.<\/p>\n<p>The renewed three-year dual admission and articulation agreement that establishes seamless transfer pathways was signed by representatives from NC and Niagara University on September 14, reaffirming a collaborative cross-border partnership between NC and NU that spans almost 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For nearly three decades, Niagara College and Niagara University have worked together to create meaningful postsecondary pathways for students,&#8221; said NC President Sean Kennedy. &#8220;We&#8217;re proud of the ways this renewed agreement reflects our shared dedication to student success by providing clear pathways that maximize the value of an NC education and supports learners to degree completion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to this new agreement, degree completion will be seamless for students across seven program areas,&#8221; said Vice President Academic, Dr. Fay Lim-Lambie. &#8220;An amazing example of the benefits for students is our General Arts and Science program. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University. &#8220;Our Vincentian mission calls us to put students at the center of everything we do. By eliminating barriers and creating clearer educational pathways, we are giving students on both sides of the border greater confidence about where their education can take them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supports and scholarships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The dual-admission framework emphasizes collaborative academic planning and transfer advising between both institutions to support learners throughout their studies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accessible academic criteria: <\/strong>Conditional dual admission is open to students who successfully complete their NC program with the minimum cumulative average of 65% with course credits transferring at 65% \/ &#8220;C&#8221; or higher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Automatic scholarship: <\/strong>qualifying NC students matriculating into NU automatically receive $500 USD dual admissions scholarship, valid for two years of undergraduate study, alongside eligibility for institutional transfer scholarships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coordinated transfer advising:<\/strong>\u00a0NC and NU partner to provide pathway curriculum guides and transfer advising. Services<\/a> is inviting the NC community to a special screening of <a href=\"https:\/\/mythicproductions.ca\/project\/silver-screamers\/\"><em>Silver Screamers<\/em><\/a>, a heartwarming and spine-tingling documentary that challenges perceptions of aging and celebrates the spirit of adventure.<\/p>\n<p>The film follows a group of spirited seniors who step far outside their comfort zones to create a horror film, discovering along the way that creativity, connection and a willingness to try something new have no age limit.<\/p>\n<p>The special screening will take place <strong>Oct. 15 in the Yerich Auditorium at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake<\/strong>. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the screening beginning at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re excited to bring <em>Silver Screamers<\/em> to the NC community and spark conversations about how we view aging and the many possibilities that come with it,&#8221; said Jackie Frail, Dean, Community Services and Justice and Fitness Studies. &#8220;With an aging population in Niagara, it&#8217;s important that we challenge assumptions about what it means to grow older and think about how we can create communities where seniors are supported, engaged and empowered.
