On June 26 Academica Group<\/em> announced that NC and Walker Industries have signed a two-year agreement that will focus on sustainable horticulture and innovation within the circular economy. Through the partnership, Walker will provide NC’s School of Environment and Horticulture with approximately 500 cubic yards of high-performance soil, mulch, and growing media each year, which will be used to enhance the campus, bolster greenhouse production, and support hands-on learning.<\/p>\n

NC President Sean Kennedy is quoted in the news brief: “By integrating Walker’s sustainable innovations into our learning environments, we are advancing our sustainability goals while providing our students with unparalleled exposure to the cutting edge of a green economy.”<\/p>\n

and Innovation recognized by NOTL Chamber of Commerce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College’s trailblazing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/\">Research and Innovation<\/a> (R and I) division has received a 2026 Business Achievement Award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chambernotl.com\/\">Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>R and I took home the Chamber’s Business of the Year Award, presented during a May 20 ceremony at Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery. The award recognizes an organization that demonstrates outstanding leadership, innovation, economic impact, community involvement, and contributions to the local business environment.<\/p>\n<p>Terry Dow, Program Manager with the Chamber, noted that the award is intended to recognize organizations that help strengthen the economic vitality and future prosperity of Niagara-on-the-Lake.<\/p>\n<p>“The NOTL Chamber of Commerce nominated Niagara College Research and Innovation for this award because of the tremendous impact the division continues to have on businesses throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake and the broader Niagara region,” said Dow. “Through our work with the business community, we have witnessed firsthand how their efforts support innovation, growth, and long-term economic success.”<\/p>\n<p>Through NC’s five Innovation Centres, R and I supports small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across diverse sectors including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/advanced-manufacturing\">advanced manufacturing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/business-commercialization\">business and commercialization<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/food-and-beverage\">food and beverage<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/healthy-aging-and-wellness\">healthy aging and wellness<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/horticultural-and-environmental-sciences\">horticulture and environmental sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Together with industry partners, students, faculty, and staff, the division helps businesses innovate, commercialize ideas, and move projects forward through applied research and hands-on collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>“We are grateful for this recognition from the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce,” said David DiPietro, R and I Manager of Business Development. “Our Research and Innovation division has scaled to collaborate with industry partners across Canada, but local partnerships still remain the priority for our Innovation Centres. Working together with the Chamber ensures that we are continuing to keep local SMEs at the top of the list when thinking about applied research initiatives.”<\/p>\n<p>Dow noted that the division’s unique ability to combine business support with workforce development, an approach that benefits both local employers and the region’s long-term economic sustainability, was a significant factor in the award committee’s decision.<\/p>\n<p>“Research and Innovation was selected from a strong field of five nominees,” she said. “What set them apart was the depth and breadth of their impact through building industry partnerships, attracting millions of dollars in research funding to the region, and providing businesses with access to expertise, facilities, and resources that help them innovate, grow, and compete.”<\/p>\n<p>The NOTL Chamber of Commerce itself is among the industry partners that R and I has supported.<\/p>\n<p>From May 2025 to February 2026, the team at NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/business-commercialization\">Business and Commercialization Innovation Centre<\/a> (BCIC) led an extensive project to help develop a new brand identity for the Chamber, including an updated logo, marketing materials and website. The brand was created by NC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/graphic-design\/\">Graphic Design<\/a> alumna Florencia Aliano (2025), who worked with the BCIC team as a research associate until May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Through its partnership with the Chamber, the BCIC team also worked with NOTL Tourism in 2025 to rebrand four marquee events including Art in the Park, Soiree en Blanc, The Peach Festival, and Candlelight Stroll.<\/p>\n<p>Recently on June 25, NC co-hosted the “Chamber on Tap” networking event at Benchmark Restaurant, welcoming NOTL businesses to the Daniel J. the country’s most unique cultural artifacts for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>The iconic\u00a0<em>Voyageur<\/em>\u00a0guitar, the\u00a0centrepiece\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixstringnation.com\/\">Six String Nation project<\/a>, has been digitally scanned and recreated by WAMIC to support the launch of an interactive online museum experience\u00a0in\u00a0honour\u00a0of the guitar’s 20th anniversary.\u00a0Created in 2006 by Canadian broadcaster and author Jowi Taylor,\u00a0<em>Voyageur<\/em>\u00a0incorporates 64 symbolic project through\u00a0NC’s\u00a0Manager of Digital Media, Luke Gillett, who also serves as Chair of the Board of Six String Nation. During their discussions, Gillett\u00a0shared the Board’s vision of creating a digital twin of the guitar, enabling people across Canada to engage with the instrument through immersive and interactive experiences.\u00a0The project was a natural fit for WAMIC’s skills and\u00a0expertise,\u00a0and the partnership quickly took shape.<\/p>\n<p>“Voyageur was built to connect us\u00a0—\u00a0not just to the diverse materials from every corner of this country, but to each other,” said Taylor. “By working with Niagara College to bring the guitar into the digital realm, we aren’t just creating a museum piece; we are opening up a new, accessible space where all Canadians,\u00a0from students in a social studies classroom to citizens exploring our national history to newcomers seeking to better understand their new home from multiple perspectives,\u00a0can discover these stories and engage in a vital dialogue about who we are, how we relate to each other, and what we can build together.”<\/p>\n<p>Leading the technical work was Ty Lozon, a Mechanical Research Assistant and senior co-op student in\u00a0NC’s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/mechanical-engineering-technology\/\">Mechanical Engineering Technology<\/a>\u00a0program, under the supervision of Brock Husak, WAMIC’s Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Specialist. Each\u00a0component\u00a0was digitally captured and recreated to within 1.5\u00a0millimetres\u00a0of accuracy, allowing the virtual model to be disassembled and explored piece by piece.<\/p>\n<p>“It was a fun\u00a0project to work on,” said Lozon. “As we built the model, I found myself learning more about the guitar’s history and the significance of the materials it contains. It was rewarding to help bring that story into a digital format.”<\/p>\n<p>To complete the work, the team used WAMIC’s\u00a0Creaform\u00a0HandySCAN\u00a0BLACK laser scanner, advanced technology commonly used in manufacturing and product development. The scanner captures millions of precise data points from a physical object, allowing engineers to create detailed digital models through a process known as reverse engineering.<\/p>\n<p>“We’re taking a physical object and reverse\u00a0engineering it\u00a0to create digital drawings and models,” explained Wilkinson. “Rather than designing something and then building it, we’re working backwards from the finished object. The technology allows us to capture complex shapes quickly and accurately, creating a highly detailed digital\u00a0representation.”<\/p>\n<p>While scanning the guitar itself was\u00a0relatively straightforward, isolating and modelling each historical artifact embedded within the instrument required considerable effort.<\/p>\n<p>“If we only modelled the guitar as a single object, it wouldn’t achieve the project’s goals,” said Wilkinson. “The value is in being able to separate the individual pieces and tell the story behind each one. Every fragment of wood, bone, stone, or metal has its own significance. Digitally capturing\u00a0all of\u00a0those components and then reassembling them into the complete guitar was a substantial undertaking\u00a0by Ty and Brock.”<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style break that barrier. We want to create an experience where people can explore the guitar in ways that aren’t possible in the physical world. By digitizing the instrument, we are unlocking access to individual pieces of Canadian history that are otherwise hidden in plain sight–whether it’s material from Haida Gwaii’s ‘Golden Spruce,’ Paul Henderson’s hockey stick from the ’72 Summit Series, or a canoe paddle belonging to Pierre Elliott Trudeau. We are creating a digital cornerstone to preserve and share this remarkable national story.'”<\/p>\n<p>WAMIC’s digital scans represent the first phase of Six String Nation’s three-pillar initiative: an interactive WebGL experience, followed by the development of a physical interactive installation, and a specialized educational framework designed to integrate these resources into Canadian social studies and history curricula at the elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u00a0represents\u00a0a unique intersection of advanced manufacturing technology,\u00a0innovation, and Canadian history. That’s the kind of leader we set out to recognize, and we’re proud to support her.”<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1635621 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/06\/vienna-lepple.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>“Vienna is an exceptional student who is truly deserving of this recognition from Dakota Prep,” said Nadja Johnson Bressan, Associate Dean of NC’s School of Trades.<\/p>\n<p>Bressan met Lepple at the beginning of her Level 3 Electrical Apprenticeship to discuss the potential of equivalencies, considering she already held a Bachelor’s degree in Automation.<\/p>\n<p>“Vienna’s reply was: ‘I want to learn, if you don’t mind I will not use equivalences and I will come to class,’ recalled Bressan. “Vienna’s work ethic and curious mind just reinforce the amazing professional she is and will be in the future. She has demonstrated excellence not only as an electrical apprentice, but also as a mentor to her peers. We are confident she will continue to succeed in her career and, along the way, inspire others to see the possibilities within the skilled trades.”<\/p>\n<p>Lepple’s professors attest that her peers felt comfortable turning to her for guidance and support. During breaks, Lepple would often gather classmates in the cafeteria or in an empty classroom, using the whiteboard to explain mathematical concepts and theories in a clear, engaging way – even creating practice exams. She also frequently stayed after class to work one-on-one with students, patiently providing extra help and encouragement to those who needed it.<\/p>\n<p>“If you walk through the campus or the cafeteria you will find Vienna in the middle of a group going over various subjects and assignments,” said one of Lepple’s professor, Mark Bay.<\/p>\n<p>“I enjoy explaining concepts in multiple ways, but most of all I love seeing when the explanation works with their learning style,” said Lepple. “You can see the puzzle pieces fit together and their faces light up with understanding.”<\/p>\n<p>In his letter of recommendation, Bay says he was taken by Lepple’s quiet confidence and humility, despite already having engineering credentials.<\/p>\n<p>While her transfer credits from university made her eligible to skip most of her first term, Lepple wanted to experience it herself.<\/p>\n<p>Bay said that Lepple was always open to learning, asked thoughtful questions, and showed a lot of interest in the material. Her willingness to help others is what made her stand out.<\/p>\n<p>“She was a great asset to both the students and myself,” said Bay, describing Lepple as the “soft spoken, confident leader of her class.”<\/p>\n<p>The win is a second for an NC student. In 2025, alum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2025\/05\/15\/wired-for-success-welland-electrical-apprentice-wins-national-fellowship\/\">Olivia Carre was awarded the Dakota Prep Followship.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The national recognition comes with a $1,000 prize that Lepple says she will put towards upgrading her tools as a journeyperson.<\/p>\n<p>Lepple’s journey shows how transformative real-world experiences can be, and why it is important to stay open to changing your path.<\/p>\n<p>“I spent over half of my [university] co-op down on the shop floor with the electrical department, working alongside electrician apprentices,” she said. “I got to see how important the trades were, and how passionate I felt about working within them. From then on, I knew that I wanted to get my ticket and be an electrician.”<\/p>\n<p>Her advice to others: You are allowed to change your mind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1635620 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/06\/20240802_092545-e1782226949431.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"492\" \/><\/p>\n<p>“Don’t be scared to change. You’re allowed to follow your passions. And even if you change your mind later, you’ll still achieve great things. Your journey is never over.”<\/p>\n<p>Lepple is now working as a journeyperson at Innovative Automation in Barrie where they build custom manufacturing lines. A lifelong learner and mentor at heart, Lepple can envision herself teaching in the future.<\/p>\n<p>“Down the line as I learn more, I’d love to come back and go into teaching for the next generation,” said Lepple.<\/p>\n<p>Lepple says she is “honoured” to be selected for the Dakota Prep Fellowship, especially knowing her professors believe in her: Daryl Pooley who taught her about electrical code and being a strong electrician; Mark Bay for teaching prints in an approachable way; and Ed Mokrzynski for supported her as a woman navigating a male-dominated field.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NC’s Vienna Lepple is one of four Canadian apprentices selected for the Dakota Prep Fellowship Vienna Lepple comes from a family of engineers. alumna and Professor Andrea Fujarczuk distills global success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College’s School of Wine, Beer and Spirits is proving once again that its faculty is truly top shelf.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Fujarczuk, Program Coordinator and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/program\/artisan-distilling\/\">Artisan Distilling<\/a> Professor, has clinched the highly competitive 2026 Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) Legacy Award for the Kentucky chapter.<\/p>\n<p>Out of professional applicants from across North America and Europe, the Julia Child Foundation-supported program selected Fujarczuk, who is also a NC alumna, as the sole global recipient for the “Kentucky Spirits from Grain to Glass” experience, recognizing her unique drive to elevate the identity of Niagara spirits.<\/p>\n<p>The international honour gives Fujarczuk a week-long experience working alongside accomplished LDEI members in the heart of bourbon country.<\/p>\n<p>“I was genuinely surprised and excited when I found out,” she said. “It’s a huge honour but for me the real meaning is what comes next it is validation that the research I am doing has real world applications and it has given me a platform to start doing the work I have been aiming to do for a long time.”<\/p>\n<p>For Fujarczuk, who is from St. Catharines, the win advances an initiative she has been championing on campus: to cultivate the untapped potential of local spirits in the Niagara region, which is globally celebrated for its world-class wine culture.<\/p>\n<p>In January, she led Artisan Distilling students in hosting a dedicated event to shine the spotlight on whisky in the region, by hosting a <strong>Celebrating Niagara Whisky<\/strong> tasting event at Benchmark restaurant to cap off Canadian Whisky Week. The initiative paired students with local distillers like Forty Creek, Dillon’s, and Wayne Gretzky Estates to showcase Niagara’s rich distilling history and what makes Niagara whisky distinct, like its “wine country finish.”<\/p>\n<p>At the time, she emphasized the event was about reclaiming the national spirit’s narrative, supporting local artisans and building a community-driven force like Niagara’s wine sector.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Fujarczuk is excited to take that advocacy to the global stage.<\/p>\n<p>“I applied for this award with a very specific intent: to use the experience as a bridge to advance the spirits industry here in Niagara,” she said. “While our region is world renowned for wine, we have yet to cultivate that same formal reputation for whisky even though we are home to some truly incredible distilleries I wanted to look at the Kentucky model and how they have successfully managed their regional identity and then see how those learnings could be adapted to help us start building a more defined recognized identity for Niagara whisky.”<\/p>\n<p>Fujarczuk’s expertise is a testament to the power of an NC education. She is a proud alumna of the College’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/program\/winery-viticulture-technician\/\">Winery and Viticulture Technician<\/a> program (Class of 2012). She has since expanded her academic and professional journey far beyond the region. Currently a Doctoral candidate at Heriot-Watt University, she is immersed in advanced research exploring the geography of value in spirits.<\/p>\n<p>Fujarczuk’s career has taken her around the world, with experience at Moet Hennessy and Thames Distillers Ltd as well as notoriety as a 2026 DISCUS (Distilled Spirits Council of the United States) Academy Leadership member, a Bourbon Women SIP scholar, and a Business Link Niagara 40 Under 40 recipient.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her work as an educator for the past seven years at NC, Fujarczuk is the Canada East Chair for Canadian Whisky Week and founder of Niagara Whisky. She is also a regular contributor to <em>American Whiskey <\/em>and <em>Artisan Spirit<\/em> magazines.<\/p>\n<p>“If you had told me in 2012 that this is where I would end up, I would not have believed you,” she said. “My path has been organic rather than meticulously planned … I have always had the drive to create change and give back to my community and that drive is really what has led me to this stage of my career. It was not a straight line, but it has been the right one for me.”<\/p>\n<p>Fujarczuk credited her NC education with providing the foundational tools that launched her international career.<\/p>\n<p>“My time at Niagara College provided the essential foundation for everything I do,” she said. “It gave me the literacy of the industry which is the ability to speak the language of the producers and understand the craft firsthand.<\/p>\n<p>“That foundation became even more powerful when I started my doctoral work.”<\/p>\n<p>Currently on sabbatical, Fujarczuk is completing her doctorate through Heriot-Watt University, exploring the economics of regionality and the geography of value in spirits.<\/p>\n<p>“Studying the economics of regionality and the true value of geography has allowed me to marry that practical experience academic rigour,” she said. “Connecting those two worlds the hands-on distilling side and the research side is exactly what I am passionate about.”<\/p>\n<p>After accepting an award at an international conference this spring, Fujarczuk’s eyes are in the future in Niagara. She noted that her students will be the direct beneficiaries of her global insights.<\/p>\n<p>“Right now, my primary goal is to soak up every insight I can about regional reputation so I can bring it back to the classroom,” she said. “I will be returning to teach full time in the winter of 2027 where I am genuinely looking forward to helping guide the next generation of Canadian distillers and finding new ways to support the Niagara College and Canadian distilling communities.”<\/p>\n<p>In early August, Fujarczuk will travel to Kentucky where the Kentucky chapter has an association with the Bourbon Women association. She has been asked to mentor one of this year’s Bourbon Women SIP scholars. Please note the following hours of operation for College services, learning enterprises, and campus facilities throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wine Visitor + Education Centre:<\/strong>\u00a0The Craft Beverage Center, formally the Wine Visitor + Education Centre, retail store, patio and indoor service will remain open with regular hours during the mid-term break week: Sunday to Thursday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NC Teaching Greenhouse:<\/strong>\u00a0The Teaching Greenhouse will remain open with regular hours during the mid-term break week from Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will be closed on Wednesday, July 1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bookstore:\u00a0<\/strong>The Welland Campus bookstore will be open with regular hours during the mid-term break week and will be closed on Wednesday, July 1.
