On Friday, June 12, Niagara College was pleased to welcome Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, Trevor Jones, and MPP Sam Oosterhof to the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake.<\/p>\n

The visitors were greeted by Dr. Marc Nantel, Vice President, Research and Innovation, and Mabel Watt, Director of Government Relations, before touring the College’s Teaching Greenhouse and Nursery<\/a> and the Horticultural and Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre<\/a> (HESIC).<\/p>\n

During their visit, Minister Jones and MPP Oosterhof met with members of NC’s HESIC and greenhouse operations teams, including Scott Golem, Associate Director, Horticultural and Environmental Sciences Innovation; David DiPietro, Manager, Business Development; James Boesch, Associate Dean, School of Environment and Horticulture; Matt Orr, Manager, Grounds and Greenhouse Operations; Ashley Paling, Research Lead, HESIC; and Rita Sterne, Technical Sales Manager, HESIC.<\/p>\n

The tour highlighted NC’s leadership in applied research and innovation within the horticultural and environmental sectors. Discussions focused on the College’s role in preparing the workforce of tomorrow while supporting small and medium sized businesses across Ontario through industry-driven research, innovation, and training.<\/p>\n

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the College’s state-of-the-art facilities and demonstrate the impact of its research and education initiatives on Ontario’s agri-food and environmental sectors.<\/p>\n

href=\"https:\/\/niagarahealthfoundation.com\/big-move-cancer-ride\/\">Big Move Cancer Ride<\/a>, hosted by Niagara Health Foundation in support of the Walker Family Cancer Centre.<\/p>\n<p>NC’s Big Move team, along with hundreds of inspired riders, will take off from White Meadows Farms on Sunday, September 13 for a 25K, 50K, 75K or 14K Fun Ride through scenic Pelham. All routes end back at White Meadows, where participants and their families can gather for a BBQ lunch, live music, and ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2025\/10\/20\/team-nc-celebrates-platinum-peddlers-club-recognition-at-big-move-cancer-ride\/\">the team earned a spot in the Big Move’s Platinum Peddlers Club<\/a> for their fundraising efforts. The elite club recognizes individuals who have raised $10,000 or more and teams that have collectively raised $50,000-plus. Ontario Network for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation<\/a> (SONAMI).<\/p>\n<p>During his leadership, the College consistently ranked among Research Infosource Inc.’s Top 50 Research Colleges in Canada – with steady top 10 rankings and achieving the No. 1 spot in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2019\/11\/12\/niagara-college-ranks-no-1-in-top-50-research-colleges-report\/\">2019<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2023\/12\/07\/niagara-college-named-no-1-research-college-in-canada-in-latest-top-50-research-colleges-report\/\">2023<\/a> and <a awards at the national and international levels.<\/p>\n<p>Marc also led Government Relations at the College, served as President of the Niagara College Learning Enterprises Corporation (NCLEC), overseeing the Teaching Winery, Teaching Brewery, Teaching Cidery, and Teaching Distillery, and helped introduce the Photonics program at the College.<\/p>\n<p>“The impact of Marc’s leadership at Disability Awareness Panel\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<h3><strong>A ‘re-Marc-able’ impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Marc holds a BSc in Physics and MSc in Nuclear Physics from McGill University, and a PhMCin Plasma Physics from the Institut National pour la Recherche Scientifique. He furthered his research program through four postdoc years in France and at the University of Michigan, in addition to serving as an Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of Toronto from 1998 to 2008.<\/p>\n<p>His visionary leadership and advocacy work has shaped national policies and practices in science and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>He has made several appearances before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research over the years, including in June 2026 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/06\/15\/dr-marc-nantel-addresses-house-of-commons-committee-on-canadas-defence-research-needs\/\">he provided expert testimony as part of the Committee’s study on Canada’s dual-use and defence research needs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marc was influential in the development of Tech-Access Canada, a not-for-profit organization that supports the pan-Canadian network of 70 Technology Access Centres (TACs) that assist entrepreneurs in developing new innovative products and solutions using technology.<\/p>\n<p>He was the Chair of the College Applied Research Taskforce, a partnership between Colleges and Institutes Canada, Polytechnics Canada, Tech-Access Canada and Synchronex. In 2022-23, on behalf of the Taskforce, he made submissions to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance that called on the government to accelerate business-led research and development through increased investment in the Tri-Council College and Community Innovation program. two-year professional development journey, marking their achievement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/2026cedpphase32024-26cohort?usp=sharing\">College Educator Development Program<\/a> (CEDP).<\/p>\n<p>CEDP is a professional learning program for full-time faculty offered in collaboration by five western Ontario colleges. Structured across three phases, the program emphasizes active learning, collaboration, networking, and sharing of best practices, fostering a supportive learning community dedicated to continuous professional growth and teaching excellence. In addition to in-person gatherings of faculty from all five colleges, NC faculty engaged in complementary development opportunities, including workshops, teaching and learning conversations, and communities of practice.<\/p>\n<p>“This culminating experience provides a valuable opportunity for faculty to step away from the day-to-day demands of teaching, connect with peers, and engage in meaningful reflection, dialogue, and professional learning,” said Whit Ross, Associate Director, Educational Development, Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE).<\/p>\n<p>On June 2 and 3, faculty participants from all five partner colleges came together at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, for the final and third phase of the program.<\/p>\n<p>Phase three featured a diverse range of sessions, with faculty engaging in discussions on culturally responsive and inclusive teaching, artificial intelligence and assessment design, Universal Design for Learning, learner-centred approaches, scholarly teaching and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), educator well-being, and strategies for providing meaningful feedback that supports student learning and growth. Kennedy:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Team NC,<\/p>\n<p>With the conclusion of our successful 2026 Spring Convocation, I want to express thanks to everyone who helped make these ceremonies a truly unforgettable celebration for our students and their guests.<\/p>\n<p>Our Convocation ceremonies are the pinnacle of our students’ NC stories; a milestone that marks their success as much as ours. Convocation embodies the teamwork, collaboration, and dedication that drives us, along with the NC values that define our unwavering commitment to student success.<\/p>\n<p>Each of us plays an important role guiding our students’ NC journey, from recruitment to the moment they cross the convocation stage.<\/p>\n<p>To NC’s incredible faculty and staff: thank you for teaching, mentoring, guiding, and inspiring our students from orientation to graduation. Amid the challenges facing our sector, your unwavering care and commitment have been a source of strength and motivation. I am deeply proud to lead this College and to work alongside such an exceptional community.<\/p>\n<p>This year’s Convocation saw 7,000 students graduate during 12 ceremonies over six days – with each ceremony as meaningful and memorable as the last. Niagara College’s Convocation ceremonies have become a model for inclusive, student-centered, interactive celebration. Led by Community Relations and Events (CRE) and Enrolment Services, the success of these ceremonies represents a cross-college collaboration with several areas making important contributions. A heartfelt <em>thank you<\/em> to everyone who contributed to this year’s ceremonies. The success of Convocation was made possible through your contributions, participation and support.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Annual Report and a look ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Convocation also represents the culmination of the 2025-2026 academic year, which was marked in many ways by the ongoing, transformational changes taking place within our sector.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1631461\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1631461\" class=\"wp-image-1631461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/06\/Annual_Report_Cover_25-26.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"246\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1631461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/about\/administration\/plans-reports\/annual-report\/\">2025-26 Annual Report\u00a0<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Like most colleges and universities, we have faced historic challenges, but we have remained agile and resilient. Despite dramatic shifts in enrolments and budgets, the past year has seen significant college-wide achievements, along with notable accomplishments by our students, employees and alumni.<\/p>\n<p>The result of your commitment to our shared values and mission for students has been meaningful success, which we have captured in the <strong>2025-26 Annual Report<\/strong>, available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/about\/administration\/plans-reports\/annual-report\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>. I encourage you to read the report, which reflects and celebrates our many remarkable accomplishments during a challenging year.<\/p>\n<p>As we look ahead to the new academic year, we are carrying this momentum forward into our recovery phase. With the most difficult work almost behind us and a positive shift underway, we are ready for the challenges ahead, guided by a growth mindset. NC will continue to be responsive and trailblazing, developing and launching new, industry-responsive programs, and growing enrolments in high-demand programs including those who will find a home in the new Health Education Building.<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned in my last message, my goal is to meet with as many employees as possible through departmental and divisional meetings, some of which will be starting soon. I look forward to that over the summer and in the months ahead.<\/p>\n<p>As many of you embark on holidays over the summer months, I want to reiterate what I shared with our graduates with all of you: Be present, enjoy time outdoors, nurture your relationships with family and friends, and make time to intentionally unplug.
