The Daniel J. Patterson Campus flowed with creativity on April 13 as Horticulture, Greenhouse & Landscape students shared their experiential project proposals for the Advanced Communications for Horticulture course.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Working with real-world industry partner Gauld Nurseries<\/a>, students were tasked with creating a communications proposal focus on designing a visually appealing storefront with a growing area and an educational space to attract customers. Doing so involved navigating a checklist of critical items while staying within a budget and then presenting their ideas directly to representatives from Gauld. With deliverables such as integrating native trees on site, a plan for planting, upkeep of the area and keeping crops clean, students exercised their communication and presentation skills to deliver comprehensive client proposals. As a UNESCO-recognized, Niagara Falls-based greenhouse, Gauld brought the perfect blend of expertise and locality as an industry partner for the project.”The goal of this Communications Assignment was to offer students a program-related authentic experience, and this year, Gauld’s was gracious enough to work with us,” said Tania Fera-VanGent, a Professor in the School of Academic and Liberal Studies. “The idea is for students to develop their written, visual and oral communication skills by creating a proposal with visuals and researching.”<\/p>\n

The project allowed students to build essential communication skills that will carry into their careers beyond NC. Whether communicating with their clients or each other, the importance of effective communication was echoed by students in each corner of the classroom.<\/p>\n

Amongst the groups presenting were first-year Horticulture Technician & Co-Op<\/a> students Jill Cope, Olivia Hammond-Srson and Keona Hassan, who designed an area to get families outside and support local businesses. For the group, the project offered an opportunity to draw on knowledge across multiple horticulture courses taken throughout the year, apply what they learned and develop their ability to communicate that knowledge through a comprehensive proposal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

“This was a culmination of our year’s education in comm, so to have that moment where you can display everything you’ve learned since September is really rewarding,” said Hammond-Srson. “Things like our landscaping course helped with our map, and looking back through first semester notes helped us with picking the appropriate trees.”<\/p>\n

The project also helped build practical, client-facing skills, reflecting the experiences they will encounter in their future careers. Cope noted that it reinforced the importance of effective communication when working with clients, especially when navigating challenges.<\/p>\n

“It’s good to know the skeleton of everything, how to work with people and how to communicate bad news when it arises,” she said. “We can design a new green space, but without that communication to explain the importance of what we are doing, it’s only a design without the context.”<\/p>\n

While the groups were given the same instructions, each approached the project from a different angle, leading them to prioritize different challenges, develop their own unique solutions, and communicate them in ways that reflected their personal approach.<\/p>\n

For student Damian Mocko’s group, that meant taking a closer look at site-specific considerations within their design.<\/p>\n

“There is lots to take into account with a project like this, but specifics like a clay slope in our design meant we had to come up with a unique solution for that.”<\/p>\n

Group member Brayden Spagnuolo also highlighted the importance of staying organized to support clear and effective communication.<\/p>\n

“Something as small as keeping a logbook to keep stuff organized day-to-day helps a lot,” said Spagnuolo.<\/p>\n

The design of the showcase allowed attendees to move from table to table, reviewing each proposal as they moved along. Jaime-lyn Pick saw the value in it as students interacted with the industry professionals.<\/p>\n

“One of the neat things about this event was that we were able to receive real-time feedback from the clients, which meant our plans and communication approach had to change along the way,” said the Tillsonburg native. “It allowed us to develop a counter solution and roll with the dynamic element of presenting in this scenario.”<\/p>\n

Through detailed plans and in-depth presentations, students were able to show off their work to peers, professors and professionals alike, allowing a realistic project for students to take on as they capped off their years at NC.<\/p>\n

companions, real connection: NC’s Fins, Feathers and Fur project takes flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coco the seal, Charlie the cardinal, and Sam the bluebird may be robotic, but their positive therapeutic benefits could not be more real – and research underway at Niagara College is helping to harness their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>The heartwarming breakthroughs that robotic animals offer seniors with dementia are the driving force behind NC’s “Fins, Feathers and Fur” project. This initiative has become the cornerstone for the College’s new Healthy Aging and Wellness Innovation Centre (HAWIC), the latest focus for its trailblazing Research and Innovation division.<\/p>\n<p>Research Lead Christine Wilkinson, a longtime Recreation Therapy Professor with expertise in dementia care, began her initial study on robotic animals two years ago. Her longtime interest in robotic animals led to the purchase of NC’s first robotic seal for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/communityservices\/program\/recreation-therapy\/\">Recreation Therapy<\/a> program in 2018. While the therapeutic benefits of these devices were well documented, Wilkinson observed a critical gap: despite their high cost – a single robotic seal can run $9,000 – they arrive without clinical guidance. She noted that staff often lacked the instructions or information needed to achieve the greatest therapeutic outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>“What I kept seeing over and over again, was that staff members didn’t necessarily know how to use the robotic animals in the most effective way with the residents,” said Wilkinson. “The manual explains how to charge them, clean their fur and troubleshoot the technology, but it doesn’t explain how to use the robotic animal to engage with the residents.”<\/p>\n<p>In January 2025, Wilkinson transitioned from recently retired faculty to HAWIC Research Lead. Supported by an investment by the federal government, she set out to bridge this training gap. Her team, with the help of students and staff from local long-term care residences, developed and piloted a three-hour Fins and Feathers training program and custom toolkits, which include intervention planning tools, large-print fact books about the animals, conversation prompts, activity resources, and visual memory supports to help residents remember their robotic visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The project has now entered its “Fins, Feathers and Fur” phase, as the College recently acquired a suite of yet-to-be named robotic cats and dogs to add to its collection of robotic animals. She noted that the robotic cats and dogs offer a lower-priced, more familiar alternative to the AI-driven seals and singing birds and they are often used as pet replacements, triggering deep-seated instincts among former pet owners. Her project offers students firsthand experience with implementing the robotic animals at long-term care homes, as well as valuable applied research experience along the way.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s so rewarding. I’ve seen staff members moved to tears because they’ve heard more words from a resident in one session with a robotic animal than they had in the previous month,” said Wilkinson. “This reinforces the belief that the work we’re doing at NC can have a broad, positive impact not only here in Niagara but across the country and perhaps around the world.”<\/p>\n<p>She is excited that the project is gaining national momentum. She has presented her findings at industry conferences from Halifax to Montreal to Vancouver – including the International Society for Gerontechnology Conference in March.<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks ahead, Wilkinson and her team will be taking new and older models of robotic cats and dogs to severa<\/p>\n<p>l long-term care homes across Niagara to gather feedback from residents and staff. They will be asking questions about the features and functionality of the different animals, while also observing resident responses. They hope to generate some name ideas for the animals during the process.<\/p>\n<p>HAWIC has also applied for a new funding grant to continue the study nationally, with an interest in expanding its scope to more geographically and culturally diverse populations.<\/p>\n<p>Involvement in the project has been rewarding for students involved.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Reid, who recently completed the Recreation Therapy program late last year, has been applying her Fins and Feathers training as a part-time Recreation Therapist at Heidehof in St. Catharines. He recently accompanied Wilkinson to the 2026 International Gerontechnology Conference in Vancouver to promote the project. Bosnich has been instrumental in developing the toolkits and supporting the filming of training videos that capture the heartwarming reactions of residents.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s incredibly rewarding knowing that what I am working on goes back to actually making a difference in people’s lives. That motivates me to put my best work forward,” said Bosnich. “With these tools, the robotic animals become more than just a cute, and comfortable distraction. They can now be used as a way to stir deep conversations with residents, such as reminiscing about a beloved pet from their childhood, which helps fulfill that soci<\/p>\n<p>al and emotional need that is so important for older adults in long-term care.”<\/p>\n<p>Staff at long-term care residences are applauding the project. Jeannette Beauregard, Behaviour Supports Program Manager, Niagara Region Senior Services, noted that the training has been valuable for staff at Linhaven where experienced recreation staff gained valuable hands-on learning and practical strategies they could use right away. She said it helped strengthen their understanding of how robotic animals can support meaningful engagement with residents, especially those living with dementia.<\/p>\n<p>“We saw the impact almost immediately. Residents connected with the robotic animals in ways that were comforting, calming, and emotionally meaningful. These interactions often opened the door to greater connection between residents and staff, helping staff engage in a more personal and responsive way,” said Beauregard. “The tools and strategies learned through HAWIC have strengthened our team’s ability to create positive therapeutic experiences for residents and has shown the value of bringing innovative tools into dementia care.”<\/p>\n<p>Heather Vokey, Director of Life Enrichment at Heidehof, sees the broader impact of the collaboration as the Fins, Feathers and Fur project prepares to visit their facility in May. “Overall, I see that this research plays an important role in improving seniors’ overall well-being, advancing scientific knowledge, and creating a tool that helps staff connect more purposefully and effectively with residents through meaningful therapeutic visits with robotic animals,” said Vokey.<\/p>\n<p>HAWIC’s applied research projects are made possible by an investment from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) through the Mobilize program.<\/p>\n<p>“The Fins, Feathers and Fur project embodies HAWIC’s mandate perfectly.\u00a0 By developing toolkits and training to maximize the therapeutic potential of robotic animals, we ensure that innovation is actively improving the lives of older adults, while creating opportunities for our students,” said Rachel Brown, \u00a0Acting Program Manager, HAWIC. “We look forward to continuing to partner with community and industry as we address the complex challenges of aging through applied research.”<\/p>\n<p>NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/healthy-aging-and-wellness\">Healthy Aging and Wellness Innovation Centre<\/a> is dedicated to applied research that improves the quality of life for Niagara’s older adults. media.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership came about after TikTok reached out asking if she would like to attend the Olympics in Milan. Her relationship with the platform had been developing over time as her audience grew, becoming one of TikTok’s “Canadian Creators,” which connects her with a designated contact for guidance and potential opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Burns also previously took part in TikTok and NBCUniversal’s creator program for the Paris Olympics in 2024, which helped prepare her for the Milan experience.<\/p>\n<p>While in Milan, her role focused on short-form storytelling across travel, culture, sport, and fan experiences. She was responsible for creating a minimum of five videos, which could cover anything from my travel experience to specific sports and athletes or eating Italian food.<\/p>\n<p>“I wouldn’t consider myself a sports expert, since I primarily focus on pop culture content, so it was exciting to challenge myself and dive into that world,” she said. “The only rule was that we couldn’t capture any ‘field of play,’ meaning no footage of athletes actually competing. It was fun pushing myself to capture all the in between moments instead.”<\/p>\n<p>Her content included features on LGBTQ+ women athletes, her vintage Vancouver 2010 Olympic mitts, and interviews with Canadians attending the Men’s Hockey games.<\/p>\n<p>Burns described the overall experience as both professionally and personally fulfilling.<\/p>\n<p>“My overall experience at the Olympics was incredible,” said Burns. “I’d never been to Milan before, so stepping off the flight and seeing someone in the airport holding a sign with my name on it made me feel like a celebrity! It was the perfect mix of getting to enjoy the city, see the Olympic activations set up around town, and experience sports like Men’s Hockey and Pairs Figure Skating.”<\/p>\n<p>The experience also offered shift from her usual content creation routine.<\/p>\n<p>“The majority of my content is made from my bedroom, so leaving my house, let alone the country, is a big shift from my usual routine,” she said. “Trips like these remind me of all the hard work that got me here. From studying Broadcasting at Niagara College, to moving to a small town for my first on air radio show, to the late nights spent creating content, it all led me to this incredible opportunity, and hopefully more to come.”<\/p>\n<p>Burns continues to work as national midday host on Virgin Radio and as an Entertainment Contributor for iHeartRadio Canada. Skills Ontario competition in Toronto, May 4 to 5.<\/p>\n<p>Students from the Schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/\">Media<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/\">Trades<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/\">Technology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/\">Environment and Horticulture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/culinaryarts\/\">Culinary Arts<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/\">Hospitality and Tourism<\/a> will represent NC in 19 competitions that test their skills, problem-solving abilities, and composure under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>One of the keys to their success: Great mentorship.<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks and months leading up to the competition days, NC faculty guided and challenged students to sharpen their skills to compete against the top college students in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Among them, Professor Frederick Graham designed a custom training panel for students in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/electrical-engineering-technician\/\">Electrical Engineering Technician<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/electrical-engineering-technology\/\">Technology<\/a> programs to practice for the Automation and Control competition at Skills Ontario. Within four hours, students must wire the panel and use the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) to program it to their specifications – it’s rigorous.”<\/p>\n<p>Competitors are scored on how well wires are labelled and bundled, and that everything functions correctly and safely according to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Judges perform a check before competitors can power up.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s a great experience for the students,” said Graham. “The competition is well put together – it’s impressive.”<\/p>\n<p>As for the student competitors, here are a few of their stories:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1604073\" style=\"width: 382px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1604073\" class=\" wp-image-1604073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/04\/20260427_Danielle_Siwek_Electrical_Engineering_NCC_9455-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1604073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Danielle Siwek<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Danielle Siwek<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Siwek of Welland joins the competition bringing hands-on experience with control panel wiring for industrial automation in manufacturing and assembly, gained through her Process Automation course and the first of two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/electrical-engineering-technology\/#coop\">co-op placements<\/a> in her NC program.<\/p>\n<p>At Procon Constructors Inc. in Welland, Siwek supported automation work on wastewater treatment control panels. The co-op gave Siwek eight months of paid work experience.<\/p>\n<p>“During co-op, I got to apply all the knowledge I learned and see the real-world application of everything I’m learning,” said Siwek.<\/p>\n<p>Her experience didn’t begin there. SCADA is a system used to monitor and control industrial processes in real-time from equipment like pumps, valves and sensors for applications like water and wastewater treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Siwek is just one of three women in her program and wants to encourage more to get involved.<\/p>\n<p>“Women have fine attention to detail, especially with building panels.”<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1604075\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1604075\" class=\" wp-image-1604075\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/04\/20260213_1501281.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"306\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1604075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zack Reimer<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Zack Reimer and Adam Cameron<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Lisa Caruso, Coordinator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/general-machinist\/\">Mechanical Techniques<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/general-machinist-apprenticeship\/\">General Machinist Apprenticeship<\/a> programs, is mentoring three students in three competitions at Skills Ontario this May: Precision Machining, CNC Machining, and Computer Aided Manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Zack Reimer from Beamsville is in the one-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/general-machinist\/\">Mechanical Techniques-General Machinist<\/a> program and brings experience competing at Skills Ontario in high school and middle school.<\/p>\n<p>“Lisa has been my main mentor walking alongside me and providing support with expertise, contacts, and extra lab time,” said Reimer, who has spent time working through practice parts from previous years ahead of the CNC Machining competition.<\/p>\n<p>“I have been doing research online, programming toolpaths for the machines to execute, and running CNC mills and lathes to become familiar with everything I might need to know,” he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1604404\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1604404\" class=\" wp-image-1604404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/04\/IMG_20260501_073552.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"151\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1604404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Iscar tools<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The College recently received an in-kind donation of precision cutting tools from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emprecise.com\/iscar-multimaster\">Iscar<\/a> for students to use to practice ahead of the competition. Combined with extensive preparation and research, the support has boosted Reimer’s confidence as he heads to Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>“I was extremely blessed by the sponsorship of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emprecise.com\/iscar-multimaster\">Iscar<\/a>, founded by Neal (Hillesheim) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emprecise.com\/\">E.M. Precise<\/a>, with all the tooling necessary to practice in the most realistic conditions possible with their fantastic selection of cutting tools,” said Reimer.<\/p>\n<p>“We have exceptional talent in our programs, and I’m very pleased with the effort our students have put in to prepare for Skills Ontario,” said Caruso. “The generous donation from Iscar has given NC students a real advantage, allowing us to stay on the cutting edge of machining technology. With these tools, we are well prepared for this year’s competition and those to come.”<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1604076\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1604076\" class=\" wp-image-1604076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/04\/4a6e9494-234d-4adb-8fcc-482ca612c984-e1777572213934.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"308\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1604076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adam Cameron<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Reimer, who aspires to work in machining at a prototyping shop – eventually his own – explains how competing at Skills Ontario has enriched his experience at NC.<\/p>\n<p>“Having the opportunity to compete at Skills Ontario brought a lot more meaning to my studies, as each aspect of my learning could be fully applied to the competition and thus had a lot more significance for me in particular, bringing a passion and desire to learn.”<\/p>\n<p>Cameron from Caistor Centre in West Lincoln is in his third and final year of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/general-machinist-apprenticeship\/\">General Machinist Apprenticeship<\/a> and will compete for the second time in the Precision Machining competition. Fellow student Muskan Baijnath will also compete and has been mentored by Joseph Fournier.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron took home Bronze in 2025. With Caruso’s mentorship, he has bigger aspirations this year to win gold.<\/p>\n<p>“I wanted to compete again this year mainly because I wanted to win first, and I wasn’t happy with my own performance from last year,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron plans to pursue a career in teaching with the goal of becoming a high school manufacturing teacher. After completing his NC program, he plans to attend university to earn his teaching credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Students from the Schools of Media, Trades and Technology make up the bulk of competitors, Jewish Heritage Month, and Polish Heritage Month. These observances invite us to learn more about the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of these communities in Canada, while reflecting on how we can continue to foster inclusion, respect, and allyship against racism and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asian Heritage Month<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asian Heritage Month is a time to learn about the rich history of Asian heritage in Canada, celebrating the diversity of its many communities and sub-ethnicities. Take time to honour these histories and lived experiences, and through open, respectful dialogue, deepen our understanding of both historical and contemporary anti-Asian racism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of previous NC Libraries and Learning Centre programming, the Living Library series (<a href=\"https:\/\/nclibraries.niagaracollege.ca\/LLEvents\/PastEvents\">Living Library #5<\/a>) is available as an online resource in recognition of Asian Heritage Month. This past session featured NC Math Professor Jolie Phuong Hoang, who shared her family’s journey of fleeing Vietnam in the 1980s and the experiences that shaped her award-winning writing.<\/p>\n<p>Hoang is the author of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Anchorless<\/em> (2019)<\/li>\n<li><em>Three Funerals for My Father<\/em> (2021)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both books explore themes of displacement, family, identity, and resilience, and are available for loan through the NC Libraires. class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Set against the backdrop of his son's first five years of life--from cooing infant to hurricane of a boy--filmmaker Justin Simms looks at modern masculinity through the lens of fatherhood as he asks an increasingly urgent question: How do we teach our boys to be better men?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <em><strong>Sons<\/strong><\/em>, eight eventful years in the making, the Newfoundland-based filmmaker confronts the challenge with imagination and creative flair, crafting a big-hearted documentary essay on parenting, patriarchy--and the pain and pleasure of
