Nate Birdsey’s journey into professional wrestling began in 2020 when a friend introduced him to WWE.<\/p>\n

What started as casual viewing quickly became a passion. Birdsey was drawn not only to the athleticism and storytelling inside the ring, but also to the culture surrounding the sport. Over the next two years, he expanded his interest beyond WWE, exploring wrestling promotions from around the world.<\/p>\n

That curiosity eventually led him to the Canadian Wrestling Federation (CWF), one of Canada’s largest independent wrestling organizations. After attending a Wrestlelusion event, Birdsey’s aunt signed him up for CWF’s youth wrestling program. At just 15 years old, stepping into a wrestling training environment for the first time was both exciting and intimidating. The demanding training challenged him physically and mentally, while also sparking a broader interest in fitness.<\/p>\n

That passion ultimately led Birdsey to enroll in Niagara College’s Fitness and Health Promotion program<\/a>, where he developed the practical skills to assess, educate, motivate and coach individuals in all aspects of fitness and health. Those skills proved invaluable this spring when he joined the CWF on a six-week tour across northern Canada.<\/p>\n

Originally from Niagara Falls and now living in Port Colborne, Birdsey embraced the opportunity to combine his passion for professional wrestling with community outreach. The tour travelled through northern communities including Whitehorse, Dawson City, Watson Lake, Old Crow and Fort Nelson, where Birdsey performed in wrestling events while also leading youth wrestling clinics, fitness boot camps and anti-bullying presentations. Through these activities, he helped introduce young people to the sport while promoting healthy, active lifestyles and positive personal development.<\/p>\n

Balancing thousands of kilometres of travel with his academic responsibilities was no small task. With support from his professors, who accommodated his coursework while he was away, Birdsey remained on track academically and graduated from NC’s School of Justice and<\/a> Fitness during Spring Convocation in June.<\/p>\n

“Nate’s passion for fitness and helping others has allowed him to grow into a confident and capable fitness professional,” said Professor Carrie Schachtschneider. “Hearing how he successfully applied the skills he developed in the classroom to real-world experiences is incredibly rewarding. Nate’s involvement with this tour highlights the positive difference our graduates can make in promoting health in the community.”<\/p>\n

“Niagara College helped prepare me not only for a career in fitness, but for opportunities like this that challenge you to grow personally and professionally,” said Birdsey. “The support, guidance and encouragement I received from my professors gave me the confidence to pursue my goals, and I’m grateful for the role they played in helping me achieve them.”<\/p>\n

Niagara College’s Fitness and Health Promotion program emphasizes applied, hands-on learning, including 150 hours of field placement experience that prepares students for careers in the fitness industry.<\/p>\n

Courses such as Personal Training (PHLT1427)<\/a> and Training Techniques II (PHLT1429)<\/a> helped Birdsey refine his exercise technique while building the confidence and expertise to demonstrate, teach and monitor a variety of advanced training methods.<\/p>\n

“My education at Niagara College helped me on this tour far more than I expected,” he said. “Many of the exercises, techniques and concepts I taught were things I had learned and practiced in class.”<\/p>\n

For Birdsey, the tour brought his NC education full circle. It gave him the opportunity to apply what he learned in the classroom and through field placements to inspire others while gaining meaningful professional experience. Now that he has graduated, Birdsey plans to continue wrestling, explore new opportunities across Canada, begin his career in personal training with CWF Wrestling, and work toward earning his Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology certification.<\/p>\n

on June 29 that will strengthen opportunities for students, employees and the broader Niagara community while expanding collaboration between the two organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The signing ceremony, held at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls, brought together leaders from NC and Niagara Parks, elected officials, community partners and Niagara College alumni employed by Niagara Parks. 498px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Niagara Parks CEO David Adames opened the ceremony by reflecting on the long-standing connections between the two organizations and the impact NC graduates continue to have throughout the region.<\/p>\n<p>“We know that we have Niagara College alumni right across the entire region,” said Adames. “At Niagara Parks for many years we’ve hired students to work with us during summer months, we’ve hired alumni, we’ve hired co-op students.”<\/p>\n<p>Several NC alumni who now work at Niagara Parks were recognized during the event, representing a range of industries including future collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>“Today, we formalize a long-standing partnership between Niagara Parks and Niagara College that is rooted in our shared commitment to excellence, innovation and growth both for our respective organizations and the Niagara region as a whole,” said Coveney. “This agreement lays the foundation for future collaborative opportunities that will provide mutual benefits for students, faculty and staff, helping to raise Niagara’s profile as a world-class destination in alignment with the Province’s Destination Niagara Strategy.”<\/p>\n<p>The new agreement builds upon the decades-long relationship between NC and Niagara Parks, who have worked closely to provide enriching career opportunities for students in the Niagara region across a number of sectors from hospitality Government of Georgia experienced applied learning firsthand at Niagara College during a visit to the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake on June 5.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hosted by the Partnerships and Enterprises team, the visit provided an opportunity to showcase the College’s strengths in hands-on learning, student experience, and international collaboration.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“As Niagara College continues to expand its global engagement activities, it was a privilege to welcome senior government representatives connected to Georgia’s education and youth affairs for a dialogue focused on international collaboration, cultural exchange, and experiential learning,” said Orel Ruiz, Director, Partnerships. “The visit also provided an opportunity to demonstrate how our applied learning model prepares students to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.”\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Developing global competencies<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The visit included the panel discussion <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Global Perspectives: Food, Wine, Tourism & International Learning<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Moderated by Maxine Semple, Director of Cultural & Global Engagement and co-creator of the Be World Ready (BWR) program, the session explored the role of international engagement in developing students’ global competencies, drawing on Georgia’s cultural heritage, food and wine traditions, and Niagara College’s BWR Global Learning Experiences (GLEs).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NC panelists included Gavin Robertson, School of Wine, Beer and Spirits Professor who previously led a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2023\/06\/06\/nc-students-immerse-in-the-cradle-of-wine-on-bwr-international-field-study-trip-to-georgia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">BWR GLE in Georgia with NC students<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and Catherine O’Donnell, School of Culinary Arts Professor. at NC’s Welland Campus starts at 10 a.m. and offers family-friendly activities, a bounce house, kids activity zone, construction vehicles and an ice cream truck, plus food vendors and plenty of vehicles. College’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/public-relations\/\">Public Relations<\/a> (PR) graduate certificate program were recognized by the Hamilton chapter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cprshamilton.ca\/\">Canadian Public Relations Society<\/a> (CPRS) at the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/cprshamilton.ca\/awards\/pinnacle-awards\/\">Pinnacle Awards<\/a> Gala.<\/p>\n<p>2026 graduates Jade Cappadocio of Stoney Creek, Karolina Odrzywolski of Hamilton, and Robert Liota of Lincoln each won awards at the ceremony in Burlington.<\/p>\n<p>“Niagara College is incredibly proud of 2026 Public Relations graduates Karolina, Robert and Jade for this well-deserved recognition from CPRS,” said Michelle Giroux, Associate Dean of NC’s School of Media. “Just weeks after graduating, they are already making an impact with local employers across the Golden Horseshoe. Their success reflects their remarkable talent and dedication to the profession and the commitment of the faculty in the PR program who prepare our graduates for rewarding careers.”<\/p>\n<p>Cappadocio, who works in communications for Tim Hortons Foundation Camps, won the Student Award of Excellence. This marks the fourth consecutive year that an NC PR student has received the honour.<\/p>\n<p>“I am so honoured and so proud to have received\u00a0such incredible recognition\u00a0for all\u00a0my hard work this early on in my\u00a0career,” said Cappadocio. “For the first time in my life, I am completely sure of who I am, what I want, and what I am capable of achieving.”<\/p>\n<p>After completing Journalism at Mohawk College, Cappadocio transitioned into NC’s one-year graduate certificate PR program, prompted by conversation with program coordinator Emily McInerney.<\/p>\n<p>“Niagara College helped me hone my skills and grow into a strategic communicator,” she said. “The program set the industry standard and gave me the confidence to pursue the job I wanted, knowing I had the skills to succeed and the courage to put myself out there. I will forever be grateful for my teachers, the curriculum, and the confidence this program reawakened within me.”<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image d tb none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/CPRS_Hamilton_2.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>From L to R: Robert Liota, Jade Cappadocio, NC program coordinator Emily McInerney, and Karolina Odrzywolski at the CPRS Hamilton Pinnacle Awards Gala on June 25, 2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Odrzywolski, who works in communications for the City of Port Colborne, won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cprs.ca\/Awards\/Major-Awards\/Heather-Pullen-Memorial-Award-for-Ethical-Public-R\">Heather J. Pullen Memorial Award<\/a>, presented to a graduating student member of CPRS Hamilton in recognition of outstanding commitment to professional integrity and a commitment to lifelong learning.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Zarzuela, Chair of Awards at CPRS, said Odrzywolski demonstrated excellent academic performance and active involvement with CPRS Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p>“What made Karolina stand apart was how she was proactive in getting involved with CPRS Hamilton as the student representative for 2025-26, and her efforts to support event planning, and her participation in the mentorship program,” said Zarzuela.<\/p>\n<p>A graduate from McMaster University with an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Political Science, Odrzywolski sees her role with the City of Port Colborne as a ‘perfect fit,’ marrying her background in political science with municipal communications.<\/p>\n<p>“I’ve always wanted to bring those two areas together: my understanding of politics and my passion for clear, accessible communication that serves the public,” she said.<\/p>\n<p>Odrzywolski was moved by the recognition by CPRS Hamilton, calling it not only encouraging, but validating.<\/p>\n<p>“It has strengthened my confidence, deepened my passion for this industry, and made it clear that this is exactly where I’m meant to be,” said Odrzywolski. “One thing I know for certain is that I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in today without the Niagara College Public Relations program. It has given me a strong foundation through hands-on learning and a lifelong network of professionals and peers who continue to support and inspire me as I grow in my career.”<\/p>\n<p>Liota and Odrzywolski were each recognized for their real-world communications work, earning them prestigious silver level Pinnacle Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Zarzuela said both Liota and Odrzywolski demonstrated exceptional aptitude in submissions that exceeded the rigor typically expected of student work.<\/p>\n<p>Zarzuela called it an “exceptional feat.”<\/p>\n<p>“It was a clear demonstration of the high quality of instruction they’ve received within the Niagara College PR program, and it was such a joy to see students put their work forward with confidence, knowing it would be judged against a professional-level criteria,” said Zarzuela.<\/p>\n<p>Liota, who came to NC to polish his skills after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication from Brock University, was recognized for crafting a communications plan for EB Games. His campaign, True North Strong and Stream, sought to reinforce the brand’s Canadian identity through collaborations with Canadian streamers.<\/p>\n<p>Liota found employment soon after graduating in a communications role for the City of Welland.<\/p>\n<p>Odrzywolski developed a communications plan for the Hamilton Street Railway, leveraging hands-on experience from her NC program. Her winning campaign focused on building awareness among residents on new bus routes.<\/p>\n<p>NC alumnus Bhrigu Bagga (PR, 2023) was also recognized with a Pinnacle Award in the Employee Engagement category for his work as Communications Advisor for Brant Community Healthcare Systems, in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cprshamilton.ca\/awards\/special-awards\/\">Mark Gregory Memorial Award<\/a>. Bagga received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2024\/07\/03\/niagara-college-public-relations-grads-recognized-with-industry-awards\/\">Student Award of Excellence<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Applications for the one-year graduate certificate are open for the Fall Term with classes starting in September. supporting teammate Abbey Gooder while raising funds for cancer research through the upcoming Terry Fox Run.<\/p>\n<p>The teams will participate in the Niagara-on-the-Lake Terry Fox Run on September 20, continuing to rally for Gooder as she undergoes treatment in her ongoing battle with cancer. Gooder is currently recovering from a second surgery after additional cancer was discovered, and coaches, teammates and supporters are once again coming together to show their support.<\/p>\n<p>“Abbey has been, and continues to be, an incredible part of the Knights volleyball family,” said Steve Stone, Head Coach of the Knights women’s and men’s volleyball teams. “Her dedication, passion, and no-excuses attitude have had a lasting impact on our program, and we’re grateful to have her with us.”<\/p>\n<p>“As a team, we know cancer has touched all of us in one way or another,” Stone added. “While we wish there was more we could do, supporting the Terry Fox Run is one small way we can help. We’re proud to take part in honour of Abbey and everyone whose life has been affected by cancer.”<\/p>\n<p>The Terry Fox Run, founded in honour of Canadian hero Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, has raised millions of dollars for cancer research while bringing communities together in support of those affected by cancer.
