Flags at Niagara College’s Welland Campus and Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake have been lowered to half-mast in remembrance of the Canadian Armed Forces members who lost their lives in the tragedy at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, on October 17.<\/p>\n

employers and participate in in-person interviews during the College’s Employer on Campus – Fall Recruitment Week, held Oct. 5-9, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/careerservices\/\">Career Services<\/a> team, the week-long event brought 15 employers to both the Welland and Daniel J. The event also introduced students to career development resources at NC and ways to prepare for future employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>“Our goal was to create direct opportunities for students to apply for current part-time openings in a small, non-intimidating setting where students and employers could connect on the spot,” said Dina DeBon, Director of Co-operative Education and Career Services.<\/p>\n<p>“We also wanted to expose students to the type of programming available to them at NC and how to ensure they are prepared for job opportunities in the future. Recognizing the financial challenges students are facing, we see value in providing convenient and broad networking opportunities on campus,” said DeBon.<\/p>\n<p>Participating employers represented a wide range of industries. Frank DeChellis, who has been named the recipient of Ontario Soccer’s 2026 Coaches Development Award.<\/p>\n<p>Presented as part of Ontario Soccer’s annual Centre Circle Awards, the honour recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to coaching development across the province through education, mentorship and a commitment to player development.<\/p>\n<p>DeChellis, who has served as head coach of the Knights men’s soccer team since 2012, is also a Professor and Program Coordinator in NC’s School of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>A Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) A-License Coach and Chartered Professional Coach, DeChellis has dedicated nearly four decades to developing players and coaches throughout Niagara and Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond his roles at NC, he serves as Coach Development Coordinator with the Welland Soccer Club and delivers coach education for Canada Soccer. He has also contributed to coaching development through Ontario Soccer, the Niagara Regional Soccer Program and major sporting initiatives, including the 2022 Canada Summer Games.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">“Coach Education has been a nice addition to my soccer journey because I am passionate about soccer, coaching and teaching, and this checks all the boxes,” said DeChellis. “My work at the Welland soccer club is enjoyable because it allows me to fill in that gap between formal coach education and the realities of running a team and putting your soccer knowledge into teachable chunks.”<\/p>\n<p>DeChellis also credits the support of NC’s Athletics department for helping him grow as a leader in the soccer community.<\/p>\n<p>“Michele O’Keefe, Senior Director of Athletics & Student Engagement at NC, encourages and supports varsity coaches to be technical leaders in our respective sports communities,” he said. “Her contacts, ideas and advice have helped me grow in that space. Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The annual alumni reunion will bring alumni, former Knights athletes, family, friends and members of the NC community together for an action-packed day of Knights athletics, opportunities to reconnect and a tailgate celebration in The Core.<\/p>\n<p>Guests can take in four home games featuring Knights basketball and volleyball, while the 4 p.m. tailgate will feature food and refreshments, photo opportunities, prizes and a kids zone.<\/p>\n<p>Our Knights athletes have always been an important part of the NC alumni community. As former Knights return to campus for ReuKnighted, guests are encouraged to support the next generation of student-athletes through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/09\/11\/assisting-the-knights-new-scholarship-initiative-launches-for-student-athletes\/\"><em>The Assist: You Pass, They Score<\/em><\/a>. Part of NC’s Together campaign, the new initiative raises funds for scholarships to help student-athletes pursue their academic and athletic goals.<\/p>\n<p>ReuKnighted will offer guests an opportunity to learn more about The Assist and how they can support NC’s varsity student-athletes. achieving Living Campus Certification, with NC among them. The certification recognizes outstanding commitment to sustainability, conservation, and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1693463 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/LogoBLK_2026-350x350-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"158\" \/><\/p>\n<p>“It’s an honour to support ambitious post-secondary schools in meeting their organizational goals for sustainability and student engagement — and, at the same time, advance our shared objectives to help support wildlife and restore habitats in communities across Canada,” said Elizabeth Hendriks, V-P, Restoration and Regeneration at WWF-Canada. “With our Living Campus certification, we celebrate the passionate staff, faculty and students who spearhead these efforts, and aim to inspire post-secondary institutions nationwide to invest in nature.”<\/p>\n<p>NC is a partner with WWF-Canada through its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campus.wwf.ca\/how-it-works\/\">Living Planet @ Campus program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>“We enjoy our partnership with WWF-Canada and their continued support and recognition of the multi-year projects Niagara College undertakes to support conservation,” said NC’s Katie Bristow, Sustainability Program & Outreach Coordinator.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1693464 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/ncwff.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Inspiring collective action of phragmites management<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ontario’s worst invasive plant species, phragmites, is no match for NC.<\/p>\n<p>Committed to sustainability as a local leader, NC is tackling this invasive plant, which threatens ecosystems and infrastructure across the province, including on campus.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 23, NC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/09\/23\/nc-welcomes-minister-harris-as-ontario-announces-5m-investment-to-combat-invasive-phragmites\/\">welcomed Minister Harris to the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake<\/a> where the Province of Ontario announced a $5 million investment to combat invasive phragmites. The funding will support local efforts, including NC’s conservation projects, which involve students.<\/p>\n<p>“Removing phragmites on campus was a fulfilling experience,” said Nichita Gongescu, Environmental Technician student. “Helping combat the spread of an invasive species was a great opportunity to act on an environmental threat and protect biodiversity in our local area.”<\/p>\n<p>WWF-Canada commended the project for restoring the campus wetlands and improving access to nesting sites for snapping and painted turtles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Community engagement through Bioblitz, student learning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Niagara College’s campuses are living laboratories where students, researchers and industry partners can contribute to solutions for environmental challenges. Each year, nature enthusiasts from the broader Niagara community are invited to take part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/sustainability\/students\/bioblitz\/\">Bioblitz<\/a> at the Daniel J. Prof Adam Weaver explores unbuilt history of Niagara Falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When tourists flock to the “Honeymoon Capital of the World,” their attention is typically focused on its iconic waterfalls, towering hotels and \u00a0bustling entertainment districts – but \u00a0for NC Tourism Professor Dr. Adam Weaver, some of the most fascinating aspects of his hometown lie in what cannot be seen.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver shines a spotlight on the “never built” history of Niagara Falls in an academic article to be featured in <em>Tourism Recreation Researc<\/em>h.<\/p>\n<p>In “Presence, absence, and constative alignment: unbuilt visitor attractions in Niagara Falls, Ontario,” he highlights proposed visitor attractions that did not materialize.<\/p>\n<p>“Unbuilt attractions represent paths not taken. In recent years, I have tried to shift my writing to Niagara-based tourism in hospitality topics,” said Weaver, who has authored 35 academic articles and 12 book chapters. “Tourism and hospitality in the Niagara region has received scholarly attention but the volume of work that is out there in academic articles and edited books is relatively small compared to the significance and reputation of Niagara.”<\/p>\n<p>One example Weaver has pointed out is Maharishi Veda Land – an expansive, fully climate controlled theme park once proposed for the Lyons Creek area. Championed by well-known Canadian magician Doug Henning, the park’s business plan featured an elaborate conveyor system, and ride designs that, according to Weaver, “probably still defy modern engineering.”<\/p>\n<p>Another unrealized project, Weaver noted, was a proposed Titanic-themed museum. In his research, Weaver used a conceptual drawing of the museum provided by St. Catharines-based designer Lex Parker while leaning on the expertise of Kaitlin Laslo – a local history librarian at the Niagara Falls Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>Projects like these ultimately failed for a variety of reasons – like a business plan that became unviable due to economic or political shifts, or a failure to secure suitable land. In the case of Maharishi Veda Land, Weaver noted, the proposal’s fantasy elements were simply not grounded in practical development reality.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver said that successful tourism development relies on “constitutive alignment” – that various circumstances and variables must come together for an attraction to actually be built.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver’s exploration of the unbuilt landscape directly informs his teaching at NC. During field trips to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Weaver frequently points out what is missing just as much as what is present – drawing attention to sites like the perpetually incomplete hotel parking garage at the intersection of Stanley Avenue and Dunn Street.<\/p>\n<p>“Students are often familiar with visitor attractions hotels and transportation infrastructure that have been built. Students are curious to hear about what could have been and what never came to pass,” he said. “They naturally then ask, ‘well what happened? Why was a certain attraction never built?’<\/p>\n<p>“Talking about places never build draws students into the conversation and gets them interested in talking about tourism destinations more broadly.”<\/p>\n<p>Weaver’s latest article pairs well with another he recently published about the promotion of the Niagara region to geo-tourists – a path the region is actively taking in contrast to the abandoned paths of unbuilt theme parks.<\/p>\n<p>As a resident of the North End of Niagara Falls, Weaver noted that his scholarly appreciation for unbuilt attractions only goes so far when it comes to his own daily life.<\/p>\n<p>“Similar to many folks. I probably only venture down to the tourism district when desperately trying to think of ways to entertain out-of-town visitors,” he said. “Thankfully, there are attractions – actually in existing ones – present which enable me to occupy these visitors when they come to town. It was a second home, a classroom and a workplace. Through intimate conversations and personal memories, <strong><em>Restaurant Kids<\/em><\/strong> explores the sacrifices made by immigrant parents and the resilience passed on to the next generation.
