the team <\/em>– employees, students, alumni, as well as family and friends – and all cycling levels are welcome. a future: From College program to Red Seal Carpenter in four years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Andy Orban of St. Catharines, a one-day trades bootcamp opened more than a door.<\/p>\n<p>It opened his eyes to a career that led from Niagara College to apprenticeship to a Red Seal certification in carpentry – all in just four years.<\/p>\n<p>After two years studying math and economics at university, Orban left school and took a job as an automotive assembly worker. The experience made him appreciate hands-on work, while also helping him realize that he wanted a career that would continually challenge him, offer opportunities to learn, and leave him proud of what he accomplished each day.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, he left the assembly line to do some soul-searching and stumbled upon a one-day Tools in the Trades Boot Camp. Meeting local tradespeople, getting hands-on experience, and receiving a starter toolkit gave him his first glimpse into a career in skilled trades.<\/p>\n<p>Yearning for more, his research led him to the Construction Skills Fundamentals program at NC, a partnership with the Niagara Home Builders Association funded by a provincial grant.<\/p>\n<p>“The program helped me see the uniqueness of construction and carpentry,” said Orban. “It’s made me appreciate the art of building from a simple two-dimensional drawing to something three-dimensional like a house. It was nice to see that the end product of my work could be a beautiful thing like a home for a family to enjoy.”<\/p>\n<p>The 16-week program gave Orban the basics in framing and a paid placement at Paroschy Construction Ltd., who hired him full-time. In the winter of 2024, Orban earned his Certificate of Completion alongside an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2024\/04\/26\/sixty-three-students-earn-unique-trades-certificate-to-support-demand-for-new-home-construction\/\">Award of Distinction<\/a> for professionalism, leadership and dedication.<\/p>\n<p>The next step took time, effort, and commitment. Over a year and a half, Orban put in long hours to prove his dedication before his employer agreed to sponsor his first apprenticeship.<\/p>\n<p>Apprenticeships are structured through a level system, with each stage requiring a combination of classroom training and on-the-job hours to advance. At NC, Orban completed Carpentry levels ones and two, which focused on safety, blueprint reading, layout, hand tools and residential construction, including framing, flooring, roofing, walls, doors, windows and finishing. He credited the support of his NC professors, whose real-world experience he was always eager to learn from.<\/p>\n<p>One of Orban’s professors at NC, Julian Ledonne, said it was rewarding to watch his former student discover what he wanted to pursue and dedicate himself to achieving it.<\/p>\n<p>“It was awesome being a part of it and watching someone who was a little down on their luck turn things around and set themselves up for a bright future,” said Ledonne.<\/p>\n<p>Ledonne added that Orban’s success was the result of his determination and work ethic.<\/p>\n<p>“Anyone willing to work hard, stay driven and make sacrifices can achieve the same feat. Andy was exceptional in all those areas, and that’s why he is where he is today. I’m excited to see the rest of his story.”<\/p>\n<p>Orban completed his level three courses at another college and recently passed his Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) for General Carpenter, the official credential proving journeyperson status in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>He now works at Black Forest Construction in Welland where he’s even had the chance to tour those considering a career in the skilled trades.<\/p>\n<p>“If you have passion for it and you’re hungry for it, it’s possible to get what you want at the end of it, which for me was my red seal ticket,” said Orban.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Andy Orban of St. Catharines, a one-day trades bootcamp opened more than a door. Girls Sports Day rescheduled for Sept. 19 at NC’s Welland Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welland Girls Sports Day has been rescheduled for <strong>Saturday, Sept. 19<\/strong> and will now take place at Niagara College’s Welland Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth annual event, presented by NC in partnership with the City of Welland, was originally scheduled for June at Empire Sportsplex but was postponed due to weather. With the Sportsplex busy this fall, the event is moving to NC’s Welland Campus for its new September date.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event introduces girls aged six to 12 to a variety of sports in a supportive, hands-on environment led by athletes, coaches, students and community partners.<\/p>\n<p>This year’s event will feature a variety of sports and activities, including new additions such as mini rugby and martial arts.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the NC community will also be part of the day, with Hairstyling students returning to run a sports hairstyling station and Recreation Therapy students hosting booths in the Parent Hub.<\/p>\n<p>The Welland Public Library Bookmobile will also be on site from 10 a.m. to noon, giving participants and their families an opportunity to browse the mobile library’s collection, including a selection of sport-themed books.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Volunteers needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NC staff and students are invited to volunteer and help make the event a fun and welcoming experience for participants and their families.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers play an important role throughout the day, supporting sport and activity stations, registration, equipment distribution, the Parent Hub, set-up and clean-up, and other event needs.<\/p>\n<p>No previous experience is required.<\/p>\n<p>NC students may also be eligible to submit their volunteer hours toward Co-Curricular Record (CCR) credit.<\/p>\n<p>Those interested in volunteering can register at: <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.cglink.me\/2y7\/s193\">ca.cglink.me\/2y7\/s193<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Questions about volunteering can be directed to Abby Silver, nc-TRAC Program Manager, at <a href=\"mailto:asilver@niagaracollege.ca\">asilver@niagaracollege.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Participant registration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those who registered for the original June event are being given the first opportunity to confirm their participation for the rescheduled date.<\/p>\n<p>Any remaining spaces will open to the public on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welland Girls Sports Day has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19 and will now take place at Niagara College’s Welland Campus. Craft IPA wins silver on international stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College’s Teaching Brewery has added another feather to its brewing cap with a silver medal at the prestigious U.S. Open Beer Championship.<\/p>\n<p>NC Craft IPA took silver in the highly competitive English India Pale Ale \/ IPA category.<\/p>\n<p>“This is the first win for our IPA,” said Brewmaster Professor Jon Downing. “The IPA categories are the most hotly contested these days, so the award is significant.”<\/p>\n<p>Downing noted that the IPA continually gets reformulated and adjusted as hops, malts and consumer tastes evolve. The award-winning beer represents the latest version developed by head brewer Ian Morrison who was assisted by lead brewer Adam Marshall during Winter term.<\/p>\n<p>Both second semester and final semester students contributed to crafting the winning brew.<\/p>\n<p>“This award is a great reflection of the quality and care that goes into our beers, and of the hands-on learning our students experience throughout the brewing process,” said Amanda Baldinelli, Hospitality Manager, NC Craft. “It’s especially rewarding to see a beer produced here at Niagara College compete on an international stage and be recognized among breweries from across North America and beyond. We’re proud to have this award-winning IPA on tap and to share it with our guests here at NC Craft Beverage Centre.”<\/p>\n<p>Originally brewed with extra hops and a higher alcohol content for the long voyage to India during British rule, the IPA was later adapted using North American hops as colonization expanded. At 6 percent ABV, NC Craft IPA features\u00a0 a medium body and a copper hue. The palate delivers sharp notes of pine and citrus balanced by a sweet malt backbone resolving into a lingering, hoppy finish.<\/p>\n<p>Medal winners for the 2026 U.S. Open Beer Championship were announced in mid-July. As one of the premier events celebrating brewing excellence, this year’s competition drew entries from around the globe across more than 180 categories and subcategories.<\/p>\n<p>The NC Teaching Brewery shared the podium in the English Pale Ale\/ IPA category alongside gold winner Allusion Brewing Co. of Pennsylvania and\u00a0 bronze winner Gravel Road Brewing Co. in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>NC Craft IPA is available for purchase in 473 mL cans and in kegs (20 L, 30 L or 50 L) at the NC Craft Beverage Centre (formerly the Wine Visitor + Education Centre) located at the Daniel J. students living in Residence through tabling opportunities at both the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Welland Campus.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of each term, the Residence team welcomes College departments and services into Residence spaces to help students learn more about the supports, resources and opportunities available to them. Departments are invited to set up in the Residence lobby, meet students where they live and provide information about their services.<\/p>\n<p>This fall is a great opportunity for departments and services to participate as <strong>Fall Orientation (Sept. 8<\/strong>) and the <strong>first day of classes (Sept. 9)<\/strong> approach. Opportunities are also available throughout the academic year for areas interested in connecting with Residence students on a more regular basis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Book a Residence tabling opportunity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All NC departments and service areas are welcome to participate and may book as many dates at either campus as they choose.<\/p>\n<p>Tabling opportunities are available in two-hour blocks. The online booking system displays availability up to 90 days in advance and remains active throughout the year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Daniel J. Patterson Campus Residence, in front of the programming calendar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Welland Campus Residence<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/outlook.office.com\/bookwithme\/user\/76d63e3622d34a75a6a55f449b678703@niagararesidence.ca\/meetingtype\/E4D4ksz050qzHm_I9ZpdOQ2?bookingcode=c2098f2b-bfed-4aaa-9941-72d585fde84e&anonymous&ismsaljsauthenabled&ep=mcard\">Book a tabling opportunity with Kira Robb, Residence Life Coordinator<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Tabling takes place in the Welland Campus Residence interior lobby, behind the secured doors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a preferred date or time is not available through the booking system, employees are encouraged to contact the Residence Life Coordinator for the respective campus to discuss alternate arrangements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to bring<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Residence will provide a covered table, or two if needed, as well as chairs. An electrical outlet is also available nearby for laptops, screens or other equipment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Participating departments and services are encouraged to bring materials that will help students easily identify and learn more about their area, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Departmental banners or signage<\/li>\n<li>Posters and promotional materials<\/li>\n<li>Rack cards, brochures or other take-away resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Departments interested in offering a small activity or other form of student engagement are also encouraged to connect with the Residence team. Residence can help promote participating departments and activities through its social media channels and monthly newsletter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional opportunity to reach Residence students – Residence newsletter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Departments and services can also connect with Residence students by sharing relevant information, resources, events and activities through the monthly Residence newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>The newsletter is distributed to residents between the 27<sup>th<\/sup> and 31<sup>st<\/sup> of each month and highlights information and opportunities for the month ahead.
