The Niagara Independent<\/em> posted an article on NC’s CICE program, the valuable opportunities it provides individuals with developmental disabilities and other significant learning disorders, the new CICE Experiential Learning Lab, and the Ontario Thorold Paper Foundation’s contributions to the new facility and NC since 1979.<\/p>\n

The new lab has allowed for new programming such as the STEP-UP initiative, which earned a 2025 Niagara College President’s Award for Innovation in Student Learning and Success. The project is a part of Niagara College’s Together campaign.<\/p>\n

The festival, which runs from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, serves as the ultimate showcase of applied learning.<\/p>\n<p>Guests can sample 12 small-batch beers, including individual student projects and collaborative class brews. Attendees will also play a critical role in the competition by voting for the People’s Choice award winner.<\/p>\n<p>“Project Brew is a prime example of the hands-on applied learning that defines the Niagara College experience. We’ve spent 15 years blazing trails for Ontario’s craft beer industry and this festival is where legacy meets the next generation,” said Craig Youdale, Dean of Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies. “Our graduating students pour 16 months of training and their passion for brewing into this public celebration, and it’s the perfect way for the community to get a taste of what’s new and next in the craft beer industry.”<\/p>\n<p>For soon-to-be Brewmaster graduates, the event is more than a party; it’s applied learning in action.\u00a0 From the initial “grain to glass” brewing process to the logistics of event management, the festival highlights the hands-on skills gained through the program.<\/p>\n<p>“After four tough semesters developing key skills, these students are flexing their creativity in a final academic flashpoint,” said Professor Adrian Popowycz. “They not only get to show off their talents as brewers but also practice the key business skills of promoting an event and learning how to talk about their creations in a public setting. The students take this very seriously and I love seeing the energy they put into making this event a continuing success.”<\/p>\n<p>“This is really the culmination of four terms of dedication from all of us, the early morning coffees, the late-night discord chats to nail down recipes, it’s all led to this,” said Brewmaster student and Project Brew Class Chair Lachlan Robertson. “I am extremely proud of each and every one of us and I think we’ve created a special lineup of products, and there’s no better place to show them off than at Project Brew.”<\/p>\n<p>Robertson, a St. Catharines native who returned to Niagara after 15 years in Kingston, noted that the program allowed him to pivot from bartending to professional production. He will feature two beers: “Spring Forward,” a lavender-infused New England IPA, and “Unk’s Red Ale,” an Irish Red brewed in honour of his great uncle.<\/p>\n<p>“It has been a fantastic experience from start to finish. Getting to flex the creative muscles in the brewery has really given me a lot to think about in terms of product positioning, while the event management angle has put into perspective the amount of hard work and dedication that is required to launch a showcase such as this,” said Robertson. “But I think the best experience I’ve gained is how to work with various entities and co-ordinate our efforts to create something special.”<\/p>\n<p>Raman Singh, who moved from India to St. Catharines, is using the festival to bridge technical brewing with conceptual design. His offerings include “Nordic KnightLoaf,” a Baltic Porter inspired by Scandinavian spiced bread, and “Tea-Leichtful,” a delicate German Leichtbier infused with Oolong tea.<\/p>\n<p>“From recipe formulation to process control, every step had to support the overall vision of the beer. This has helped me understand not just how to brew a beer, but how to design one with intention, which will be very important in a professional brewing setting,” said Singh. “Something that stands out for me is the business studies integrated into the program which helps in understanding the business perspective of the industry too as I am from a family background with a small business as well so I can relate to the business point of views even better.”<\/p>\n<p>South Korean student Hamse Shin was drawn to the program after working at his uncle’s pub. He mastered the art of “pivoting” when a malt error led him to transform a planned Helles lager into “Oops! Spelt it Wrong,” a refreshing yuzu sour. He is also presenting “Hopfenweizen 666,” an experimental dry-hopped German wheat beer.<\/p>\n<p>“Project Brew is a valuable opportunity to design my own recipe and explore different techniques. It allows me to manage the entire process, from wort production to fermentation and packaging,” said Shin. “Through this, I was able to gain more practical knowledge and experience and grow as a brewer.”<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the tasting, the event carries deep meaning for the graduating class. Judges will select a first-place winner to receive the $4,500 Matt Soos Memorial Scholarship, awarded in memory of 2015 graduate Matt Soos who passed away shortly after beginning his career in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Guests will also have an opportunity to vote for their favourite Project Brew; the winner will receive a People’s Choice award. Award presentations will take place at the event, around 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Event info and tickets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Project Brew will be held on Friday, April 17 (4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.) at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The end-of-term ticketed event will be held indoors (Rankin Family Student Commons).<\/p>\n<p>The College’s Cider 101 will also be available at the event – as a non-beer option – and food prepared by NC culinary students from Benchmark will be available for purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $35 (plus tax) and include five tokens and a commemorative glass. Classes run every weekend through November 8,\u00a0with the exception of the Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Day, Labour Day,\u00a0and Thanksgiving Day holiday weekends. Players must work together to repair their crippled starship before the black hole’s gravity tears them apart.<\/p>\n<p>“The goal is to have an immersive whimsical and intense experience for the players,” said Katsmar. “We’ve crafted an amazing high saturated broken-down ship, with lights and details everywhere. The art style resembles games like Alien Covenant mixed with cyberpunk colors.”<\/p>\n<p>Katsmar enrolled in the program, drawn to the artistic side of game development, and took pride in how the art direction of the game ultimately turned out.<\/p>\n<p>“I think creating our game was an amazing experience,” said Katsmar. “Working collaboratively with other artists and programmers to create industry<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The launch party served as a recruitment hub with representatives from global powerhouses like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts (EA), alongside Niagara-based indie studios, scouting for talent.<\/p>\n<p>Turner Spring, a Technical Artist at Ripple Effect Studios and a 2018 NC Game Development graduate, returned to the event as an industry guest.<\/p>\n<p>“It really looks like the student work has ramped up over the years .. the projects only seem to be getting better year over year,” he said “Technology keeps improving, and it looks like the profs are keeping up with it too.”<\/p>\n<p>He recalled taking part in the launch party as a student, noted that there were several other NC grads at UbiSoft, where he previously worked, and credited the College for his own The new lab provides a space for students to strengthen their academic, social and employability skills.
