College’s Welland Campus, the breakfast will raise funds in support of student-athlete scholarships, helping to empower the next generation of NC Knights to succeed in both academics and athletics. Funds raised will help ease financial barriers, assist with tuition and academic costs, and enable student-athletes to pursue their academic aspirations while excelling in their sport.<\/p>\n<p>The event will feature distinguished guests, the Honourable Neil Lumsden, Ontario’s Minister of Sport, and Paul Johnson, City Manager for the City of Toronto, who will take part in a discussion exploring how major sporting events can leave lasting community impact. The conversation will highlight how Ontario and Toronto are leveraging global events such as the FIFA World Cup to strengthen communities, and how similar opportunities can benefit the Niagara Region through increased sport tourism and local engagement.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be moderated by Michele O’Keefe, Senior Director of Athletics and Student Engagement at NC, and will provide attendees with insights into the power of sport to drive economic growth, build community pride, and create lasting benefits for local communities.<\/p>\n<p>“We’re excited to have Minister Neil Lumsden and Paul Johnson on campus to discuss the importance of creating community legacy through sport,” said O’Keefe. “With Canada playing host to the World Cup games, there’s a unique opportunity to discuss how post-secondary institutions, schools, government, corporations and local businesses can work together to build a dynamic sport and activity hub, while also raising support for student-athlete scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>Guests can register for the event online <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/pages\/responsepage.aspx?id=wgrfDvBLjkqQsrP1J5AvuYV2nGsT1SBPnmSstzUyhpVUNVVLUzk1N0dZVkdRS0NCM1I0V0NOSzFFNi4u&route=shorturl\">here<\/a>. event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Celebrate Niagara-on-the-Lake<\/strong> brought chefs from local hotspots including Garrison House, Peller Estates Winery and Restaurant, Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery, Treadwell Cuisine, and Vintage Hotels to Benchmark on April 9 for the second installment of the College’s Celebrate Niagara dinner series, which shines a spotlight on different areas of the region’s culinary scene. It was a showcase of talent with many NC alumni involved but also an array of locally grown and produced products as part of the evening,” \u00a0said Craig Youdale, Dean of Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies. “Students got to work side by side with these amazing culinarians and it was a celebration of all things Niagara.”<\/p>\n<p>For John Vetere, Executive Chef and Director of Estate Winery at Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery, the night was a testament to local talent. Ravine set the tone for the evening with the first course: Smoked Lake Erie Pickerel featuring Antunes maple syrup, caraway rye wafer, and a chicory celery salad.<\/p>\n<p>“I love these events and think it’s so great that the students play an integral part in the success of the evening,” said Vetere. “We’re big supporters of NC so to see the homegrown talent gives great confidence in the future of the hospitality industry.”<\/p>\n<p>Vetere, who moved from Toronto 11 years ago, noted that the NC connection runs deep in his own kitchen and he has taught part-time at the College.<\/p>\n<p>“I believe 90 percent of our back-of-house team is from NC,” he said, pointing to Events Chef Ted Stone as a prime example.<\/p>\n<p>“This is a great event. Niagara has so much to be proud of, from where we started and where it’s headed. [Moving here] was the best decision of my life and I couldn’t feel more at home here. The culinary community welcomed me with open arms, and I feel privileged to be able to share the kitchen space with other great NOTL chefs.<\/p>\n<p>The event also served as a homecoming for Jason Williams, Executive Chef at 124 on Queen Hotel and Spa and Treadwell Farm to Table Cuisine. A former Culinary Management student, Williams’ time at NC originally took him as far as Ireland for a co-op before he returned to complete his apprenticeship and eventually teach at the College.<\/p>\n<p>For Williams, participating in the series – which coincided with Treadwell’s twentieth anniversary – was about paying it forward.<\/p>\n<p>“I think the event is an amazing idea to show off the culinary talent in the Niagara region,” he said. “The chance to work with students from the College is always a pleasure. restaurants from a specific area in a single sitting. While the industry shines, students sharpen their skills and build professional networks both in the kitchen and the front-of-house.<\/p>\n<p>The series kicked off with a splash on March 12 with <strong>Celebrate Niagara Falls <\/strong>featuring Bittersweet Symphony, Casa Mia Ristorante, Fallsview Casino Resort, Niagara Parks, Niagara Food Specialties, and Tide and Vine Oyster House.<\/p>\n<p>Following <strong>Celebrate Niagara-on-the-Lake<\/strong>, the third event in the series will be: <strong>Celebrate Niagara: Lincoln and West Niagara<\/strong> on May7 featuring the Good Earth Food and Wine Co., Redstone Winery and Restaurant, Revalee, and Vineland Estates Winery (sold out).<\/p>\n<p>The series will continue on May 21 with a focus on the diverse food scene of<strong> St. Catharines<\/strong>. This sold-out event will include Bolete, Fat Rabbit, Niagara Food Company,\u00a0 and Wellington Court (sold out).<\/p>\n<p>The series will conclude with <strong>Celebrate Niagara: Welland<\/strong>. The final event will welcome various guest chefs from Rose City. Through innovative teaching methods, including simulation-based learning, Dr. Odreman trains future nurses to be compassionate, confident and resilient healthcare providers who will go on to fill critical industry gaps in the local community and beyond. An alumna of the NC’s Honours Bachelor of Business Administration – International Commerce & Global Development program, one of Semple’s most notable contributions to the College is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beworldready.ca\/\">Be World Ready<\/a> program, which she co-created in 2010 to prepare students for success in a globalized world. As Outreach and Education Advisor with NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/studentrecruitment\/\">Student Recruitment team<\/a>, Ryder regularly visits local high schools and is a constant presence at recruiting and community events. On campus, she participates in initiatives that contribute to the College’s welcoming environment, including Pride events where she has shared her lived experience as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. She is also a part-time instructor who teaches NC’s EDI in Canada course and supports the College’s EDI initiatives through her work as an EDI Catalyst.<\/p>\n<p>“I am humbled to have been nominated for this award and grateful to work at Niagara College where I am privileged to be part of a supportive team that celebrates individuality,” said Ryder. “In my role, I am often a big part of very important decisions for both young people and mature students. href=\"https:\/\/www.ncengage.ca\/rec\/home\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Campus Recreation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hosted\u00a0its third annual\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/paralympic.ca\/sport\/boccia\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">boccia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at both the\u00a0Welland\u00a0Campus\u00a0and\u00a0Daniel J. Patterson Campus in\u00a0Niagara-on-the-Lake.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The events\u00a0took place\u00a0over two days\u00a0across\u00a0both campuses\u00a0–\u00a0Welland\u00a0on Wednesday and NOTL on Thursday\u00a0–\u00a0allowing\u00a0students and employees\u00a0from each campus\u00a0to\u00a0participate\u00a0and\u00a0emphasize\u00a0inclusivity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Brooke Pasco, NC’s Workplace\u00a0EDI\u00a0Specialist,\u00a0this was a chance for students\u00a0and\u00a0employees\u00a0to come together and learn about accessible and inclusive sport.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“There are few sports as truly accessible\u00a0as boccia, so if there was one sport to include in Inclusion Week and speak to\u00a0the values it represents, it’s boccia,” said Pasco. “It was a great opportunity to have some fun, make some connections,\u00a0continue to build upon the College community and enhance our students’ sense of belonging.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While many people are familiar with bocce, boccia\u00a0is\u00a0its indoor companion, harnessing the best of bocce in a different element.\u00a0While both bocce and boccia revolve around getting your balls closest to the white jack at the\u00a0centre\u00a0of the field of play,\u00a0bocce features harder balls on outdoor surfaces like grass,\u00a0whereas\u00a0boccia features softer leather balls on surfaces such as a hardwood court.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jenna Wilson, NC’s Campus Recreation Coordinator, spoke about the benefits of boccia\u00a0that made it the perfect sport for Inclusion Week\u00a0and\u00a0an easy answer when approached about collaborating\u00a0on an event.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">What makes it unique is its adaptability,” said Wilson. “As an official Paralympic sport, it can be played standing or seated and with or without assistive equipment like ramps. By removing barriers to participation, boccia enables a wide range of individuals to engage in meaningful competition and recreation. Patterson Campus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While the unique versatility of boccia has made it a standout sport\u00a0for inclusion, Wilson also touched on why it works.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">“Research consistently shows that recreation and physical activity support not only physical health, but also mental well-being, social connection, and overall student success,” she said. “Initiatives like Inclusion Week and activities like boccia help\u00a0build the community and experience the value of movement and play in a way that is welcoming to all.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Autumn Brown, a level two student in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/liberal\/program\/cice\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CICE<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0program\u00a0that\u00a0participated\u00a0in Thursday’s event,\u00a0was already\u00a0acquainted\u00a0with boccia.\u00a0Her familiarity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0combined with sharing the experience with her peers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0made\u00a0her\u00a0thrilled\u00a0to partake.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“I remember playing boccia in high school and having a lot of fun,” Brown said. “Reliving that memory was great, but to do it alongside my friends made it even better. A platter of retro video games and delicious snacks, individual awards recognizing student excellence, and friendly connection and conversation left students and employees leaving The Core smiling.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"335551550":1,"335551620":1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the video games<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0such as\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mario Kart: Double Dash<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Super Smash Bros<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0were\u00a0a popular draw amongst students, the\u00a0main highlight was the\u00a0recognition of\u00a0student excellence.\u00a0Professors\u00a0Jim Schinkel,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the School of Technology,\u00a0and Melissa\u00a0VanderLely,\u00a0in the School of Media Studies, were thrilled for their students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"335551550":1,"335551620":1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“It was a\u00a0really\u00a0relaxed\u00a0atmosphere,” said Schinkel. “Students came in, played video games, had food, and then we had the award ceremony. It was\u00a0a nice way\u00a0to unwind and celebrate everything they have done.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"335551550":1,"335551620":1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Schinkel recapped the layout of the room to create an automatic visual:\u00a0a\u00a0Wii set up on the overhead projector with four chairs and controllers;\u00a0multiplayer races off to the side by the pool tables; four consoles beside the\u00a0arcade-style\u00a0basketball\u00a0game; and lots of\u00a0pizza, chicken bites and other snacky foods.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Both\u00a0Schinkel\u00a0and\u00a0VanderLely\u00a0spoke\u00a0proudly\u00a0of\u00a0their\u00a0students\u00a0and the efforts they\u00a0put in\u00a0to get them there.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“They put in that\u00a0work,\u00a0they put in that effort and they’ve asked questions,” said Schinkel. “But\u00a0it’s\u00a0also awesome to see what they do\u00a0outside of the classroom.\u00a0Broadening their horizons through things like building their own Minecraft servers. Learning\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0just happen inside of the classroom.”<\/span><span tell them that we noticed, and\u00a0for them to connect with one another and meet students\u00a0from other levels of the programs.”<\/span><span graduating from the CP program\u00a0after a late-year switch to the program.\u00a0His work ethic,\u00a0consistent support of his classmates\u00a0and ambassadorial presence\u00a0in the CPA program\u00a0helped him earn this award and\u00a0left\u00a0a lasting impression\u00a0on\u00a0VanderLely.<\/span><span href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/04\/17\/coding-a-new-path-student-launches-first-of-its-kind-challenge-at-nc\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">coding competition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in our department and\u00a0Jeonghwan\u00a0helped\u00a0come up with\u00a0the problems they were solving\u00a0and\u00a0helped run the competition.\u00a0The opportunities that he has been involved in came about because he put himself in that position.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Oh, who studied contemporary music in South Korea before coming to Canada in 2024,\u00a0enjoyed the experiential aspect of the CP program, especially the fourth-semester community sponsored project.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“We were tasked with building applications for real-world clients, and for me, this\u00a0was developing a client management system for a\u00a0physiotherapy\u00a0studio,” said Oh. “Being placed into a situation with real-world constraints and regulations was a valuable experience.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond the work he put in during his time at NC, Oh credited the people he has met along the way for their part in his development.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“It’s\u00a0always a good thing to have good people\u00a0around.\u00a0The support from the faculty and my classmates has\u00a0been great,” said Oh. “This event allowed us to reminisce, play some Mario\u00a0Kart\u00a0and enjoy hanging out with\u00a0our\u00a0peers and\u00a0professors.”<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“I’ve really found a passion for technology, and being recognized for something that I’ve come to love is an\u00a0honour,” he said. “If\u00a0I’m\u00a0going to do something,\u00a0I’m\u00a0going to give it 100 per cent.\u00a0So,\u00a0to be recognized for two years of\u00a0hard work, getting my assignments done and passing tests, it was really\u00a0kind of like\u00a0that payoff.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As Neill closes in on his graduation, he mentioned his particular interest in cloud, physical and software networking.\u00a0He credits the CST program\u00a0with\u00a0teaching\u00a0him<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0variety of skills.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“We learned a lot of things like troubleshooting, hardware skills, server-building, programming and script-building skills,” he said of the CST program. “And\u00a0also\u00a0interpersonal skills like teamwork, problem-solving, time\u00a0management\u00a0and organizational skills.\u00a0It’s\u00a0a well-rounded program that has taught\u00a0me\u00a0a lot.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Schinkel, one of Neill’s professors, spoke highly of him.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“Liam is one of those students that works hard to\u00a0get himself\u00a0ahead,”\u00a0he\u00a0said. “He talks to everybody in\u00a0class,\u00a0he has\u00a0a very positive\u00a0attitude and\u00a0he’s\u00a0never afraid to ask for help or\u00a0assistance\u00a0if needed. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Liam that he whole-heartedly deserves.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The CST, CP and CPA programs open plenty of doors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for their students, such as Neill’s interest\u00a0in networking and\u00a0Rookwood’s\u00a0in\u00a0cybersecurity.\u00a0VanderLely\u00a0spoke highly of the potential that the CP and CPA programs give their students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":false,"134233118":false,"201341983":0,"335551550":1,"335551620":1,"335559685":0,"335559737":0,"335559738":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“Our program really positions you well to make future decisions,” she said. “It’s\u00a0about building that\u00a0strong foundation\u00a0and then seeing where you want to take it.
