Host Emily Vukovic toured NC’s Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, connecting with students and faculty and showcasing the College’s hands-on learning opportunities. The segment featured visits to the Teaching Winery, Teaching Vineyard, Teaching Brewery and Teaching Greenhouse, as well as the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program and classroom, offering viewers a chance to see students in action across a variety of learning environments.<\/p>\n

The segment also encouraged prospective students to attend Fall Open House, taking place November 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both NC campuses.<\/p>\n

acknowledge and thank you for your efforts to support our students, and for the positive energy, commitment and pride you bring to NC Life. I also want to share an update on our enrolments ahead of the 2027-2028 budget process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">The postsecondary sector continues to face a challenging financial environment, primarily driven by policy changes at the federal and provincial levels impacting enrolments. It is important to remember in tough times that every year, thousands of students continue to choose Niagara College as their pathway to career success and are supported through to graduation – this is our mission in action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">I know that the past few years have been a difficult period across our college, but our hard work to respond and evolve gives us positive momentum as we head into our planning cycle for 2027-2028. Domestic enrolment remains strong and will be buoyed by new programs and program deliveries. We were successful in our Priority Growth Fund proposal, and we will receive funding for 1,021 new seats across 33 programs in high-demand areas, including health, skilled trades, STEM and education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">For the Fall Term, domestic enrolment is slightly ahead of the target set out in our 2026-2027 Business Plan and Budget. Our international enrolments, however, are below our budget projections and continue to be negatively impacted by the effects of federal policy changes on Canada’s brand as a study destination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">We remain firmly committed to growing enrolments and revenues as our key strategy to adapt and succeed within a very different postsecondary landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">While we are making progress, challenges remain. We know that further expenditure reduction will be necessary in 2027-2028 to achieve our budget commitments, balanced with our commitment to teaching, learning, student success and sustainable growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">A hiring pause remains in place, with exceptions only for those positions that meet strict criteria related to enrolment and revenue growth, and critical services.<span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u200b<\/span> As we begin budget planning for 2027-2028, we all share a role in carefully managing resources, finding more effective ways of working, and supporting opportunities for growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\"><b>Fall Open House Nov. 7<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">At a time when growing our enrolments and connecting with future students is more important than ever, we will welcome thousands of prospective students and their families to our campuses for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/openhouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fall Open House 2026<\/a><b> <\/b>on<b> <\/b>Saturday, November 7. Open House remains a tremendous opportunity to put our best foot forward for prospective students and their families to showcase NC Life and all it has to offer. When it comes to our dedicated team and our unique learning environments, seeing is believing and I’m incredibly grateful for the college-wide effort that goes into this important event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 12.0pt;\">We know that getting students onto our beautiful and innovative campus learning environments makes a difference. You make a difference. Every interaction with our student-focused, passionate, welcoming, employees and current students reinforces our brand promise and helps prospective students and their influencers to feel confident in choosing NC. alumnus combines communications expertise and technology to make election information more accessible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An idea almost a decade in the making has become a reality for NC alumnus Matt D’Avirro, who has combined his background in digital marketing and communications with emerging technology to launch a new online platform to help voters make informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p>D’Avirro, a 2012 graduate of NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/public-relations\/\">Public Relations graduate certificate program<\/a>, is the creator of <a href=\"https:\/\/votegrid.ca\/\">VoteGrid<\/a>, a web-based platform designed to help voters access and compare information about candidates running in elections.<\/p>\n<p>The platform allows candidates to complete profiles and provide responses to questions in 200 characters or less, which are then displayed side-by-side for users to explore.<\/p>\n<p>For D’Avirro, the early concept for VoteGrid goes back nearly 10 years to his time working at a local marketing agency.<\/p>\n<p>While assisting a municipal candidate with his website and social media, he came across a newspaper article that presented candidates’ responses to a series of questions in a side-by-side format.<\/p>\n<p>“I had a lightbulb moment,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing the potential for a centralized digital resource that could present information in a similar way, D’Avirro began envisioning a platform that could be used across different elections.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing that vision to life wasn’t immediately possible. Without a background in software development, D’Avirro initially faced significant costs to build a platform with the functionality he envisioned. The idea was put on hold until recent technological advancements made it more accessible and affordable to develop the platform himself.<\/p>\n<p>Once he was able to turn his concept into a functioning platform, the next challenge was attracting users.<\/p>\n<p>“Building the app is the easy part, getting the users to come was the bigger challenge,” said D’Avirro.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on his professional experience in digital marketing, communications and public relations, D’Avirro developed strategies to generate awareness, encourage sign-ups and attract media attention.<\/p>\n<p>Since launching, VoteGrid has received hundreds of positive comments, and more than 300 candidate profiles have been completed on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>D’Avirro, who currently works for a national business-to-business software company, hopes to continue developing VoteGrid and expanding its reach across Canada, with the potential to explore international markets in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building communications and strategic thinking skills at NC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>D’Avirro credits his time at NC with helping him develop the skills that have supported his entrepreneurial journey.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from the Public Relations program in 2012, he pursued a career in digital marketing, building on the communications and strategic thinking skills he developed during his studies.<\/p>\n<p>“I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Public Relations program,” he said. “I honed so many skills that I still use in my career today – clear, concise communication in the writing classes, tech-forward thinking in social media classes, and having a holistic, seeing-the-whole-picture approach that was emphasized in our core PR classes.”<\/p>\n<p>He credits the program’s hands-on approach with helping him develop clear and concise writing skills, an early understanding of social media and the ability to approach communications challenges from a broader strategic perspective.<\/p>\n<p>“Whether it’s in my day job, or in building this side-project, I gained so many foundational skills through the hands-on learning I did in my time at NC.”<\/p>\n<p>For current students and recent graduates interested in entrepreneurship, D’Avirro encourages gaining practical experience and developing professional skills before launching a venture of their own.<\/p>\n<p>He believes some of the strongest business ideas emerge from firsthand experience in an industry, where professionals can identify gaps and develop solutions to address them.<\/p>\n<p>His advice is simple: “Go do first.”<\/p>\n<p>“Look for a job in a field where you can learn and grow your professional skills,” he added. “Even if it’s just for 6 months, or maybe 6 years, you’ll set yourself up better for success.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An idea almost a decade in the making has become a reality for NC alumnus Matt D’Avirro, who has combined his background in digital marketing and communications with emerging technology to launch a new online platform to help voters make informed decisions. It is an opportunity to celebrate the rich histories, traditions, and cultures of these distinct communities and recognize their significant contributions to Canada’s social, economic, political, and cultural fabric.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hindu Heritage Month<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Diwali, one of the most significant celebrations in Hinduism, is observed in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. In 2026, Diwali will be celebrated on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Often known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. It is celebrated by millions of people around the world and is an important occasion for reflection, renewal, and community.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 3 []\"><strong>Diwali Celebrations at NC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students and employees are invited to celebrate Diwali at both campuses with festive activities hosted in the Wellness Lounges. This month celebrates the histories, culture, and heritage of Lebanese Canadians and recognizes their meaningful contributions to Canada’s social, economic, political, and cultural life.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanese Heritage Month also provides an opportunity to learn about Lebanese Canadian experiences, celebrate cultural traditions, and honour the generations who have helped shape communities across the country. wfw\">\r\n\r\n\t\t \t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>HBO documentary Mama’s Boy, directed by Laurent Bouzereau (HBO's Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind), centers around the upbringing of the Academy Award®-winning screenwriter of Milk, Dustin Lance Black. Traveling back to the places where he grew up, Black explores his childhood roots, gay identity and close relationship with his mother, who overcame childhood polio, abusive marriages and Mormon dogma, while becoming Black's emotional rock and, ultimately, the inspiration for his activism. With a wealth of personal photographs and candid memories from Black's family, colleagues, and friends, Mama’s Boy embraces the personal to tell a universally hopeful tale of resilience and reconciliation through the power of love and shared stories.
