The NC community has co-op students to thank for keeping the Welland Campus looking beautiful, polished, and well-maintained.<\/p>\n

“We could not achieve what we do without our student co-op workers,” said Jeff Collee, Associate Director, Facilities Management Services. “Their hard work, alongside the FMS team, keeps our grounds looking as beautiful as they do, and they’re valued members of our team.”<\/p>\n

While many students in the School of Environment and Horticulture<\/a> support the work to maintain and beautify the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the FMS team is responsible for this work at the Welland Campus.<\/p>\n

“FMS employs students from all different departments and programs, through which many have found a passion for this work,” said Collee.<\/p>\n

Paid co-op helps Landscape Technician student grow her skills<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of those team members is Jaime Lyn Pick, a second-year Landscape Technician program student from Tillsonburg, Ontario. Pick has worked at the Welland Campus for her co-op since May 2026.<\/p>\n

“The experience overall was absolutely life changing,” said Pick who returned to school to pursue landscaping after over a decade in floral design, having previously studied Interior Design.<\/p>\n

In spring, Pick focused on preparing garden beds for new growth. Her work included clearing leaves and fallen branches, cutting back plants, pulling weeds, trimming and mowing the grass.<\/p>\n

“I feel the freedom of the outdoors, the fruits of my labor in front of me growing…I love being on the campus, I love being outside, and I love keeping up with the seasons and discovering more about the campus.”<\/p>\n

During the summer, Pick’s responsibilities shifted to removing bulbs and planting seasonal annuals and ornamental foliage plants, including SunPatiens, geraniums, ornamental kale, cordyline and sweet alyssum. She also helped water and fertilize the gardens, spending much of her day operating a tractor to maintain the extensive campus grounds.<\/p>\n

“Training on the Kubota fleet was so exciting,” said Pick. “The tractor was the most exciting. Learning to use all the equipment professionally is an amazing transferrable skill.”<\/p>\n

More than equipment, Pick says she learned a lot from the FMS team.<\/p>\n

“I really have to thank my supervisors and managers for trusting all of us students with building our confidence, making mistakes, learning from them to be able to achieve the success the NC grounds achieved this summer.”<\/p>\n

Pick’s co-op continues until December alongside a new crop of co-op students.<\/p>\n

“The weather doesn’t bother me, and I’ll see you outside.”<\/p>\n

NC co-op helps student find his “true calling” as a landscaper \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For Welland native and alum Nathan Sousa (Graphic Design, 2024; Landscape Technician Co-op, 2026) a summer co-op at NC’s Welland Campus in 2023 sparked an unexpected career change while he was studying Graphic Design.<\/p>\n

After his mother, Lucy Sousa, who retired from her role at NC in 2025, spotted an advertisement for a summer position with the FMS team, Sousa landed the job and quickly discovered a passion for working outdoors.<\/p>\n

“I remember thinking to myself at multiple points throughout my first summer working that ‘how could I ever work in an office when I could be doing this instead?'”<\/p>\n

After his first summer, Sousa stayed on as a student worker, using the opportunity to explore his next steps with his supervisors.<\/p>\n

Sousa initially enrolled in the Horticulture Technician program<\/a> before transferring to Landscape Technician<\/a> his second year where he could focus more on machine literacy and the practical, installation side of landscaping.<\/p>\n

“This proved to be a good decision… because I am now working for a private company where I do a plethora of landscape tasks daily, including machine work,” said Sousa, who works at GGS Landscaping Niagara in Niagara Falls, owned by fellow NC alum Graham Boaretti (Landscape Technician Co-op, 2013).<\/p>\n

Sousa credits the FMS team for their mentorship.<\/p>\n

“The advice and perspective I received while working on the grounds shaped how I work in the industry and the techniques I learned I use daily.”<\/p>\n

Sousa says the opportunity to work with the FMS team helped him find his “true calling as a landscaper.”<\/p>\n

“The opportunity given to me by NC to work on the FMS Team opened a door I never would’ve knocked on and with the guidance of the people above me while working there, I was able to see that continuing my education was the right move for my career.”<\/p>\n

The Grounds Working Group is exploring opportunities to expand student experiences across both NC campuses, with their diverse ecological environments offering unique learning opportunities. The group, co-chaired by Evan DiValentino, Dean, Business & Environment, and Bill Rainey, Senior Director, Facilities Management, Planning, Sustainability and Capital Projects, is in early discussions with academic areas to explore future opportunities.<\/p>\n

collaboration project, Motive Power Professor Jamie Atkins was approached by the Welland Fire department with a unique challenge. We couldn’t even hold them back the day it got here – they were all over it.”<\/p>\n<p>Now that the fire truck has arrived at the Welland Campus, Atkins said he hopes the hands-on project will involve as many students as possible from all levels of the five-semester <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/motive-power-automotive\/\">Motive Power Technician – Automotive (Co-op) <\/a>program, as different mechanical needs arise. Phase one, currently underway, is focused on getting the engine to start and restoring the vintage electrical systems and sirens. They hope to have the truck running under its own power in time for the College Fall Open House on November 7.<\/p>\n<p>The second phase will focus on brakes, suspension, and overall road safety to ensure it’s street-legal for parades.<\/p>\n<p>For students trained on modern computer-reliant passenger vehicles, the 1946 La France is a rare opportunity to venture into heavy-duty mechanics and redundant safety systems like the dual-spark ignition system which was designed to prevent the truck from stalling on the way to an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>“I’ve been in this trade for over 35 years, and I’ve never seen an engine quite like this in my life,” said Robert Zuk, Technologist in the Motive Power program. “It’s all mechanical. There are no electronics – it’s big levers and valves. It’s still the same preventative maintenance of nuts and bolts, but these students will never have this opportunity again – unless they work in a museum.”<\/p>\n<p>“This is a piece of history right here,” Zuk added.<\/p>\n<p>For the students, the project is building resumes, honing skills and teaching adaptability.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s a bit of anything and everything,” said student Riley Jerry, who chose NC’s Motive Power Technician program for its paid co-op opportunities.\u00a0“You learn about how to deal when something is super rusted on things you haven’t seen before. I think it makes you a better, well-rounded technician – you now have experience with a much more complicated older system, and that can definitely make you more knowledgeable for the field.”<\/p>\n<p>Student Jet Lewis contemplated the vehicle’s past as he threaded the engine’s spark plugs.<\/p>\n<p>“This is a very, very unique experience. It’s pretty cool to get to work on it, and just to think about how many fires this has been to, and how long ago the fires it went to were,” he said. “Just learning how these old machines worked prior to electronics makes less familiar machinery less foreign to me.”<\/p>\n<p>“This is my first time working on a carbureted motor, so I learned how to set a choke,” said student Justin Charles. “It’s good to have in case I ever want to purchase a vehicle made before the eighties.”<\/p>\n<p>Beyond technical skills, working on the vintage fire truck is teaching students how to operate under real-world shop conditions with confidence.<\/p>\n<p>“We teach them to not let the pressure get to them. “Because if the pressure gets to you, you’re more likely to make mistakes,” said Atkins.<\/p>\n<p>“We have their backs. There are many professors involved in this, so we use our knowledge and make sure that what the students have done has come out properly and it’s going to be safe when it leaves.”<\/p>\n<p>Once completed, the restored 1946 La France will serve as a rolling testament to the skills of NC’s School of Trades students.<\/p>\n<p>“It helps out the community,” said Atkins. “Once we get it going, wfw\">\r\n\r\n\t\t \t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Africville, a small black settlement, lay within the city limits of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the 1960s, the families who lived there were uprooted and their homes demolished in the name of urban renewal and integration. Now, more than twenty years later, the site of the community of Africville is a stark, under-utilized park. wfw\">\r\n\r\n\t\t \t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Africville, a small black settlement, lay within the city limits of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the 1960s, the families who lived there were uprooted and their homes demolished in the name of urban renewal and integration. Now, more than twenty years later, the site of the community of Africville is a stark, under-utilized park.
