Today’s Niagara College graduates are ready to\u00a0create, build,\u00a0and power\u00a0what comes next.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

June 11 marked\u00a0the fourth of six days\u00a0of\u00a0NC’s\u00a0Spring Convocation, with\u00a0students in\u00a0the\u00a0Schools\u00a0of\u202f<\/span>Media<\/span><\/a>,\u202f<\/span>Trades<\/span><\/a>, and\u202f<\/span>Technology<\/span><\/a>\u00a0crossing\u00a0the stage\u00a0and into their futures.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The morning ceremony\u00a0celebrated\u00a0more than<\/span>\u00a0680\u00a0graduates from the Schools of Technology and Trades. In the afternoon,\u00a0over\u00a0400\u00a0gradu<\/span>ates from the Schools of\u00a0Media\u00a0and Technology earned their credentials.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Graduands, this ceremony marks the achievement of a goal, through much hard work and determination,” said\u00a0Dr. Fay Lim-Lambie,\u00a0NC’s\u00a0Vice-President, Academic. “May you never forget or underestimate the\u00a0magnitude\u00a0of this\u00a0accomplishment.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the afternoon,\u00a0Dean’s Award recipient<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Brett Gilliam<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>from the\u00a0<\/span>Mechanical Engineering Technology (Co-op)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0program, was recognized for top marks (96.6 per cent) in the\u00a0School of Technology. The\u00a0Niagara\u00a0native already has a job lined\u00a0up from one of\u00a0the\u00a0two\u00a0paid\u00a0eight-month\u00a0co-ops in his program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Graduation\u00a0marks\u00a0the start of\u00a0a second career for\u00a0Gilliam,\u00a0who returned to school after seven years as a\u00a0Computer Numerical Control (CNC)\u202fprogrammer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I became more involved with the other automated equipment in the shop, and that sparked my interest in studying mechanical engineering,” said Gilliam.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His co-op placements included roles in machining, management, and mechanical design, giving him a broad range of experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Being able to experience so many potential career paths within the field of mechanical engineering was invaluable to my education and my future career path,” said Gillam, who\u00a0now works\u00a0as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist at\u00a0Reynold Stokes Engineering\u00a0Inc. in St. Catharines.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gillam earned his\u00a0advanced\u00a0diploma\u00a0studying\u00a0part-time during a particularly busy season of life: getting married and welcoming his first child.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“At times it was quite difficult to keep up with my studies,” he said.\u00a0“Earning the Dean’s Academic Award after all of this shows me that I still managed to get the most out of my education.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeonghwan\u00a0Oh<\/span><\/b><\/a>, a\u00a0<\/span>Computer Programming<\/span><\/a>\u00a0graduate\u00a0from Port Colborne (originally\u00a0from\u00a0South Korea)\u00a0was the Dean’s Award winner from the School of Media with an average of\u00a096.95\u00a0per cent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Computer Programming\u00a0was\u00a0a departure for Oh,\u00a0who studied contemporary music at a university in South Korea\u00a0and worked\u00a0as a guitar teacher.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I wanted to change my direction and felt that programming could be a great fit, even though I had absolutely no prior experience,” said Oh. “The reason I chose Niagara College was its smooth integration of practical, hands-on learning into the curriculum.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At NC, Oh supported\u00a0<\/span>NC’s first student-led coding competition<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and volunteered as a judge for the DSBN coding skills challenge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While he prefers to keep an open mind when it comes to his career, Oh\u00a0is\u00a0interested in\u00a0where his\u00a0two passions\u00a0intersect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I would like to explore\u00a0the\u00a0grey areas between music and technology,” said Oh. “They seemed contradictory at first, but I found that they are closely related.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the\u00a0<\/span>Wednesday\u00a0afternoon\u00a0ceremony<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Sing Fai Lau<\/span><\/b>\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span>Carpentry and Renovation Technician<\/span><\/a>\u00a0program\u00a0was the recipient of\u00a0the Dean’s Award\u00a0in\u00a0the School of Trades.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday,\u00a0<\/span>Acting for Film\u00a0and\u00a0Digital Media program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0student\u00a0<\/span>Destiny Paquin<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of Welland also joined the Class of 2026. A\u00a0familiar<\/span>\u00a0face\u00a0<\/span>within the NC community, Paquin was\u00a0a\u00a0Knights basketball athlete,\u202f<\/span>Indigenous student leader<\/span><\/a>, and\u202fmost recently\u00a0the face of promotional\u202fcampaigns\u00a0for the College.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following a teaching degree at Brock University,\u00a0Paquin’s passion\u00a0for acting\u00a0drew\u00a0her to\u00a0NC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“My program was incredible,” said Paquin of her time at the College.\u00a0“The people, the lessons and teachings, everything that I experienced in my two years I will take with me forever.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

change.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from South Korea and now living in Port Colborne, Jeonghwan had previously studied contemporary music at university and worked as a guitar teacher before deciding to pursue a completely different path. Drawn to NC’s practical, hands-on approach to learning, he jumped into the world of programming despite having no prior experience in the field.<\/p>\n<p>His hard work and academic excellence earned him the Dean’s Award for the School of Media, with a 96.95 per cent average in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/programming\/\">Computer Programming program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now graduating on June 11, Jeonghwan sees the achievement as an important milestone in his journey that is still unfolding. As he builds his career in software development, he remains interested in exploring the connections between music and technology while staying open to where the future may lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What led you to study at Niagara College and choose Computer Programming?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before coming to Niagara College, I studied contemporary music at a university in South Korea and worked as a guitar teacher for a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>I became skeptical about a career as a professional musician because I realized that the way I treated and perceived music did not align with other musicians. I wanted to change direction and felt that programming could be a great fit, even though I had absolutely no prior experience. The reason I chose Niagara College was its smooth integration of practical, hands-on learning into the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What interests you in and why are you passionate about your field of study?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most interesting part of studying programming is experiencing how deterministic logic operates within a closed system. It gives a subtle but powerful clue that I can apply to different areas of life — whether I am communicating with people, problem-solving at work, or creating music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you have a specific career goal in mind when you enrolled in your program? Did it change over time?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did not have a career goal when I first started. Now, I would like to explore the grey areas between music and technology. However, I prefer not to set concrete boundaries for myself prematurely. I am open to seeing where life takes me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you find your program experience? Any highlights?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During my last semester, I had an opportunity to develop a client management system for a physiotherapy studio as part of the Community Sponsored Project course. It was a valuable experience to handle and implement real-world constraints and regulations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What did you find rewarding about your program and area of study?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I feel specifically grateful for having the privilege to explore both aspects of this world–music and programming. They seemed contradictory at first, but I found that they are closely related and complementary.<\/p>\n<p>Studying programming allowed me to build a unique perspective that enables me to observe myself and the outer world more precisely and warmly. I will also never forget the moments I shared with my classmates–whether studying together or telling silly jokes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you face and overcome any challenges to graduate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Balancing my work with my academic schedule was a challenge, but it was both manageable and rewarding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Were you involved in any extracurricular activities during your time at Niagara College?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, I created coding challenges for the JCoders coding competition and volunteered as a judge for the DSBN Regional Coding Skills Challenge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you feel your Niagara College experience has helped prepare you for the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Definitely. The practical, project-based curriculum gave me the exact foundation I may need to become a software developer. The collaborative environment and the shared focus among my peers were also essential for pursuing my career in the tech field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What have you been doing since completing your studies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After finishing my studies, I spent time working in South Korea and returned to Canada.<\/p>\n<p>I am currently working remotely as a developer for a South Korean company, and I am planning to find a job in Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What’s next for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My immediate focus is to establish my career here in Canada. I will be working as a developer over the next couple of years, I suppose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there anything else you would like to share?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I want to express my gratitude to the faculty, professors, and my classmates for their ongoing support. June 11, she reflects on\u00a0her NC\u00a0journey that transformed both her sense of identity and her confidence. When she first arrived at NC, the Game Development student from St. Catharines was excited about stepping into a new chapter in her life but felt as though her inner fire was small, and her place within the college community was uncertain.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/game-development\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Game\u00a0Development<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0grad\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">School of Media<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from St. Catharines, Saylor knew she was Indigenous, but much of her identity had been hidden from her growing up. Rather than holding her back, that uncertainty became the foundation of a transformative journey,\u00a0one shaped by discovery, support, and community\u00a0nurtured\u00a0through\u00a0NC’s\u00a0Indigenous Education\u00a0(IE) department.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Saylor’s first connection to IE came before classes even began, through\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2023\/08\/29\/incoming-students-use-paddle-forward-as-a-way-to-prepare-for-college\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Paddle Forward<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0a land-based, experiential program designed to introduce incoming Indigenous students to culture, community, and campus life. That process eventually led her to a powerful discovery: her great-grandfather’s birth certificate, linking her family to\u00a0Ohsweken, a rural community\u00a0located\u00a0within the Six Nations of the Grand River. But the journey\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0just about\u00a0documents,\u00a0it was about belonging.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“One of my biggest fears was taking up space that wasn’t meant for me,” Saylor\u00a0explained. “But\u00a0they\u00a0(IE)\u00a0made it clear\u00a0that\u00a0my story\u00a0isn’t\u00a0uncommon, and that our people were often disconnected from our communities. They took the time to meet with me, answer my questions, and help me learn\u00a0about our people and our traditions\u00a0in a respectful way\u00a0which helped\u00a0me feel more connected to my heritage.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As she transitioned to NC life, that connection only deepened. The IE\u00a0lounge quickly became a central part of her daily\u00a0routine,\u00a0not just a place to study, but\u00a0as\u00a0a consistent, welcoming environment where she felt safe, supported, and understood.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through IE, Saylor accessed a wide range of services that supported her success holistically. Academic guidance, cultural teachings, and one-on-one mentorship helped her navigate coursework while also exploring her identity in a respectful and supported way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As she continued her journey, the impact of those supports became even more significant. In her second year, Saylor was diagnosed with autism, giving her new insight into her learning and communication style. The\u00a0IE\u00a0team played a key role in helping her access resources, navigate\u00a0her\u00a0diagnosis, and implement academic accommodations tailored to her needs.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“The IE lounge became my safe space on campus,” said Saylor. “The staff work incredibly hard to support students transitioning into college and make sure everyone feels welcome. The support I received from the IE team had such a positive impact on me\u00a0and\u00a0they truly invested in me, not just as a student, but as a person.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With that\u00a0strong foundation, Saylor’s confidence and engagement grew,\u00a0opening doors to new opportunities.\u00a0In 2025,\u00a0she received\u00a0recognition for her resilience and commitment to education\u00a0through a bursary\u00a0award at the Indigenous Student Awards Banquet\u00a0and later that year\u00a0she was selected to attend the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipceinternational.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">World’s Indigenous Peoples Conference<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in New Zealand through the Embark Student Foundation as part of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2024\/09\/03\/embark-student-foundation-grants-500000-towards-new-indigenous-student-success-pathways-project\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indigenous Student Success Pathways Project<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. She is working with Little Buffalo Studios on an Indigenous-led game project, continuing her focus on representation and accessibility. Her goal is to help shape a future where Indigenous stories are visible in games and where all players can see themselves reflected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“As a department, we’ve all had the privilege of watching Kayanna grow since the day we first met her,” said Jessica Winger,\u00a0Indigenous Student Success Leader. “We are incredibly proud of her journey at NC. The perseverance she has shown while navigating challenges throughout her program has been truly admirable. Despite those challenges, she\u00a0remained\u00a0focused on reaching the finish line and on using her voice to address gaps she saw in the gaming industry. I have no doubt she will build an incredible career for herself. Her perspective is needed, and we are all\u00a0honoured\u00a0to have been part of her story. I\u00a0can’t\u00a0wait to see her walk across the convocation stage.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“Game development is challenging\u00a0and\u00a0when you truly devote yourself to it, it takes everything,” said Saylor. “But\u00a0it’s\u00a0worth it when you can give people a sense of hope or happiness or make them\u00a0feel something\u00a0meaningful. Games create experiences that stay with people and can even change how they see the world.”<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As she approaches convocation, Saylor\u00a0reflects on\u00a0her time\u00a0at\u00a0NC by describing her growth through\u00a0two powerful images: fire and water.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“When I started at NC, my fire was small and my stream felt empty,” she\u00a0said. “Over time, the IE staff helped me tend\u00a0that fire\u00a0and bring life back to my stream. program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0returned to school after spending seven years working as a Computer Numerical Control (CNC)\u00a0Programmer.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What began as an interest in the automated equipment he worked with every day evolved into a passion for mechanical engineering and a desire to expand his technical knowledge.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Along his NC\u00a0journey, Brett got married, welcomed his first child, and continued working part-time while completing his studies. His hard work paid off when he earned the Dean’s Award for the School of Technology with an impressive 96.6 per cent average, capping off a remarkable\u00a0NC\u00a0experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today, he is already\u00a0applying\u00a0his education in a full-time role as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist\u00a0– a\u00a0position he secured through his final co-op placement in the program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What were you doing before attending Niagara College?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prior to returning to school, I\u00a0had been working\u00a0as a CNC Programmer for seven years. I became more involved with the other automated equipment in the shop, and that sparked my interest in studying mechanical engineering.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What interests you\u00a0about\u00a0your field of study? Why are you passionate about it?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I have always been interested in taking things apart to see how they\u00a0work and\u00a0being able to build anything I can think of. Mechanical engineering covers so many\u00a0topics,\u00a0I now feel like I truly could build or design anything I can think of.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How would you describe your experience in the program? Were there any highlights?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The program was fantastic overall, and the capstone design project was\u00a0a great way\u00a0to bring everything from the program together and give us a chance to apply everything we learned.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Did you face and overcome any challenges while completing your studies?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I got married and had my first child during my time at NC, all while working part-time. At times it was quite difficult to keep up with my studies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Earning the Dean’s Academic Award after all of this shows me that I still managed to get the most out of my education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Did you complete a co-op placement as part of your studies?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I had three co-op placements as part of the program: one in machining, one in management, and one in mechanical design.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being able to experience so many potential career paths within the field of mechanical engineering was invaluable to my education and my future career path.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How do you feel your Niagara College experience has prepared you for the future?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The combination of classroom learning, hands-on\u00a0projects\u00a0and co-op experiences helped me develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed in the industry.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How do you feel about your upcoming\u00a0convocation\u00a0day?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I am looking forward to celebrating this accomplishment with my family. across Niagara College. A graduate of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/acting\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Acting for Film & Digital Media program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the Welland native has been a familiar face within the NC community as an NC Knight student-athlete, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/04\/02\/nc-honours-indigenous-student-success-at-annual-awards-banquet-with-dr-phyllis-webstad\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indigenous student leader<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0most recently the face of NC video advertisements and promotional\u00a0campaigns.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recognized for her authentic on-screen presence and positive energy, Destiny has appeared in NC’s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yWaQrGiLOVA\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">On Campus<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Njcldx6jvcc\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Apply Now<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0campaigns while also serving as a student ambassador at\u00a0College\u00a0events.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Along the way, she discovered a passion for performance that reshaped her\u00a0future plans\u00a0and opened doors she never expected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What were you doing before attending Niagara College?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I was at Brock, studying Physical Education with a second teachable in History.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What led you to study at Niagara College and your program of study?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0female students\u00a0who were going to be playing basketball\u00a0during my\u00a0first year prompted me to come and join the\u00a0NC Knights basketball\u00a0team. Many of us\u00a0had played\u00a0on teams with each other in our youth and so we wanted to be reunited one last time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What interests you\u00a0about\u00a0your field of study? Why are you passionate about it?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I’m passionate about my field of study because it makes me feel alive, and it inspires me\u00a0over and over again.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Did you have a specific career goal in mind when you enrolled? Did it change during your studies?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It did change\u00a0once I started. I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0know that being a working actor was something I wanted to do, or thought I could do, entirely. So,\u00a0I am still going to be pursuing teaching at some point, but my mind and heart are open to opportunities coming my way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How would you describe your experience in the program? Were there any highlights?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My program was incredible. The people, the lessons and teachings, everything that I experienced in my two years I will take with me forever.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What did you find rewarding about your program? Does anything stand out that\u00a0you’ll\u00a0never forget about your time\u00a0at\u00a0NC?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I will never forget the loving and accepting nature of the student body and staff. It was so easy to feel kindness from those\u00a0who\u00a0I got to call classmates, from those I passed in the hall, and everyone in between.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I will also never forget the many experiences I was privileged enough to be a part of through Indigenous Education.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Did you face and overcome any challenges while completing your studies?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was tough in the first year to play basketball and take classes, but I was\u00a0not unfamiliar\u00a0with that type of pressure.\u00a0I decided\u00a0not to play basketball in my second year to focus on\u00a0my\u00a0school\u00a0work, which was a good decision\u00a0as I wanted to dedicate my full time to my studies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Were you involved in any clubs,\u00a0teams\u00a0or extracurricular activities during your time at NC?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I played basketball during my first year and was involved in\u00a0a number of\u00a0Indigenous Education initiatives and events throughout my time at Niagara College.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Do you feel your NC experience has helped prepare you for the future?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So much so. My program has prepared me for its specific workforce in a way that I understand\u00a0more and more\u00a0every day.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How do you feel about your upcoming\u00a0convocation\u00a0day? What does it mean to you personally?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It means a lot. Not only is it the first post-secondary program\u00a0I’ve\u00a0completed thus far in my academic journey, but it signifies the completion of something I did when I was stepping outside of my comfort zone.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What’s\u00a0next for you?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I plan to pursue further education, although\u00a0I’m\u00a0not sure\u00a0where\u00a0yet. more than 900 graduates crossed the stage at the Welland Campus Simplii Financial Athletic Centre. The day featured two ceremonies honouring graduates from programs that support key sectors and communities across Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>The morning ceremony recognized graduates from the Schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/culinaryarts\/\">Culinary Arts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/\">Hospitality and Tourism,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/\">Wine, Beer and Spirits.<\/a> As a premier tourism destination, Niagara relies on skilled graduates and professionals to support its hotels, restaurants, wineries, breweries, attractions and visitor experiences.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon ceremony saw graduates from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/justiceandfitness\/\">School of Justice and Fitness<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/\">School of Trades<\/a> cross the stage, whose careers will support safer, stronger communities and help fill Caron<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/culinaryarts\/program\/culinary-management\/\">Culinary Management (Co-op)<\/a> graduate, received the Dean’s Award for the School of Culinary Arts after achieving an outstanding 93.4 per cent average.<\/p>\n<p>Coming to NC began as an opportunity for Caron to explore her interest in food but soon evolved into a passion and a career path she had never previously considered. Drawn equally to creativity, science, and innovation, she developed an interest in the research and development side of the food industry.<\/p>\n<p>“I have always had a passion for food although I didn’t fully realize it until shortly after enrolling at NC,” she said. “Food is a fundamental pillar in my life that goes well beyond sustenance. Before enrolling at NC, Baumann Fairhead worked in hospitality before pursuing an accounting career. Drawn back to an industry she is passionate about, she came to NC to build on her professional experience and further develop her industry knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>“I enjoy the hospitality industry for its diversity and energy,” said Baumann Fairhead who plans to continue growing her hospitality career in the region. “It is a dynamic industry where no two days are the same.”<\/p>\n<p>The Dean’s Award for the School of Wine, Beer and Spirits was awarded to <strong>Jonathan Brown<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/program\/brewmaster-brewery-operations\/\">Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management<\/a> graduate who achieved a 93.94 per cent average. A mature student already working as a brewer, Brown came to NC to deepen his knowledge and advance his career in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>“I got into brewing as a hobby,” said Brown. “What started as just doing something different turned into a full-blown passion and it became my mission to learn everything I could about beer.”<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his studies, Brown balanced family responsibilities, a lengthy daily commute, and demanding coursework while continuing to pursue his passion for brewing. He secured a position as a production brewer at Wellington Brewery in Guelph just days after completing his final exams and is looking forward to continuing his career in the thriving craft beverage industry.<\/p>\n<p>At the afternoon ceremony, <strong>Ruby Hill<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/justiceandfitness\/program\/correctional-worker\/\">Community and Justice Services (Correctional Worker)<\/a> graduate, received the Dean’s Award for the School of Justice and Fitness after achieving a 95.79 per cent average. A Niagara native, Hill transferred to NC after a year of university and discovered a passion for supporting others through community-based work.<\/p>\n<p>“I am extremely passionate about law and justice, specifically youth corrections and getting involved in a career that can impact the lives of others,” said Hill.<\/p>\n<p>While at NC, Hill balanced nearly full-time work, operated a photography business and maintained an active volunteer role, all while excelling academically. She plans to continue her education through a Social Work degree while pursuing a career focused on crisis intervention and community support.<\/p>\n<p>The Dean’s Award for the School of Trades was also presented during the afternoon ceremony to <strong>Singh Fai Lau<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/carpentry-renovation-technician\/\">Carpentry and Renovation Technician (Co-op)<\/a> graduate who achieved a 97.25 per cent average.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Spring Convocation continues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Niagara College’s Spring Convocation ceremonies resume on Thursday, June 11 and continue through Saturday, June 13, with ceremonies held daily at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Approximately 7,000 graduates in total will be recognized during the College’s largest Spring Convocation celebration to date.<\/p>\n<p>For a detailed ceremony schedule and a complete list of graduating programs, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/enrolmentservices\/convocation\/#schedule\">Niagara College’s Convocation website<\/a>. who were recently honoured with Benchmark Student Experience Scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>Established to celebrate students within the Culinary, Tourism, and Beverage Studies division who bring more to the table than just academic excellence, the winter term scholarships were awarded for leadership, teamwork, and tireless dedication to Benchmark restaurant and various charitable initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The student recipients were presented with their awards in May, including Flora Rofouyan (Culinary Management Co-op), Jaskaran Singh (Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations), Monika Sharma (Supply Chain Management), and Lily Cochrane (Culinary Innovation and Food Technology). Three of the award recipients–Rofouyan, Singh, and Cochrane–graduated on the morning of June 10, while Sharma will graduate on the afternoon of June 12.<\/p>\n<p><em>InsideNC<\/em> caught up with the graduates to hear about their experiences.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Flora Rofouyan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/culinaryarts\/program\/culinary-management\/\">Culinary Management Co-op<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Current city: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Vaughan (originally from Iran)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What led you to NC?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Cooking and baking have always been my passion. Before coming to Canada, I studied English Literature and International Law, but deep down I always knew culinary arts was where my heart belonged. Watching chefs create meaningful experiences through food inspired me greatly, and eventually I decided to follow my true passion. Niagara College stood out to me because of its strong hands-on learning environment and industry experience. My goal is to continue growing in the culinary industry, especially in fine dining and pastry.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Time at Benchmark:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I started working with Benchmark January 2025. I worked as a student cook and pastry team leader. I managed pastry production and assisted with event preparation, plating, and service execution.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Why did you want to get involved working with Benchmark?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I wanted real industry experience beyond the classroom and the opportunity to learn from experienced chefs in a professional environment. Benchmark gave me the chance to challenge myself, improve my skills under pressure, and become part of a team that truly felt like family.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Highlights from Benchmark experience:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Benchmark gave me invaluable real-world experience in professional kitchens, large-scale events, teamwork, leadership, communication, and fine dining service. One of the biggest highlights for me was being involved in major events, including chef signature dinners and large gala services. I also had the opportunity to work alongside talented chefs and mentors who shaped me both professionally and personally.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Benefits of Benchmark experience:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Benchmark taught me how to work under pressure while maintaining professionalism, consistency, organization, and attention to detail. Beyond technical skills, it helped me build confidence, communication skills, leadership abilities, and resilience. The most rewarding part was learning directly from chefs and being trusted with responsibilities that helped me grow every day.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What’s next for you?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I recently completed my program and have started working full-time in the culinary industry in Toronto. My experience at Niagara College and Benchmark built the foundation for my career. It prepared me not only technically, but also mentally and professionally for the realities of the industry. The support, mentorship, and experiences I received gave me confidence in myself and reminded me why I chose this path in the first place.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Jaskaran Singh<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/\">Program: Hospitality Management – Hotel and Restaurant Operations<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Current city:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Niagara Falls (originally from Punjab, India)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What does this scholarship mean to you?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I would say receiving this scholarship means a lot to me on a personal level. It represents not just financial support, but also recognition of the hard work, dedication, and passion I have put into my journey. As an international student, this recognition and support motivate me even more to continue growing and giving my best in everything I do in my life.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What led you to enrol at NC?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To be honest moving to Canada and studying at Niagara College has been a life changing experience for me. My goal is to build a successful career in hotel and restaurant operations where I can continue learning and making a difference.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Time at Benchmark:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I have been working with Benchmark since September 2025 as a Front of House staff member (server). Working in Benchmark has truly been one of the most valuable and best part of my journey at Niagara College. What inspired me to join Benchmark was the opportunity to gain hands on experience and learn from the best. I would say one of the biggest highlights for me was working at different events, where every event brought new challenges and learning opportunities. I am especially grateful to my professor Victor, who has guided and supported me throughout my journey. It made me believed that hard work and continuous learning give a fruitful result. It is a great motivation to me to continue working hard towards my goals. This award not only recognize the dedication and efforts but also gave a financial support. This will support me in the professional development.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What led you to NC?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My first program Artisan Distilling brought me to the NC. While pursuing that program, NC became home to me. Visiting big distilleries in Ontario made my vision clear: supply chain plays a vital role in the supply of spirits at international markets.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Highlights from NC:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Working as a volunteer for the Cap, Corks and Forks event in 2025 made me passionate to learn more. Through Prof. Victor Oliveira, I learned more about Benchmark Restaurant. After doing some research, I found the pathway to submit my application for Benchmark Restaurant.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Time at Benchmark:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My journey at Benchmark began in September 2025, working as a server at the Benchmark to assist guests, ensure a high-quality service, and create a welcoming dining experience. I wanted to learn the hospitality skills, from basics to advanced. Benchmark, being a teaching and learning restaurant, was a great place to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment, learn customer service, public speaking and team-work skills.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Benefits of Benchmark experience:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Working at Benchmark helped strengthen my communication skills, time management and problem-solving skills. Management and colleagues helped me build courage to speak in public. I learned to stay calm under pressure while maintaining excellent service standards. Benchmark gave me a chance to learn how to work in a real-world situations and improved my ability to handle difficult situations. The main skill that I developed was the confidence to interact with guests. Prof. Victor gave the best support.
