Niagara College’s 12th<\/sup> Living Library event offered a glimpse into the personal and professional journey of Leah Hogan, Director of Indigenous Education, exploring the experiences and relationships that have shaped her approach to education and leadership.<\/p>\n

Hosted virtually by the Libraries and Learning Centres (LLC) team on October 14, the event featured Hogan, a proud Bear Clan woman from the Oneida Nation of the Thames, in conversation with Maxine Semple, Director of Cultural and Global Engagement.<\/p>\n

Throughout the discussion, Hogan reflected on her more than 20 years in post-secondary education, her connection to land-based learning and her recent work helping to shape NC’s new Indigenous Education Strategy, Paddling Together<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Art, reflection and connection to the land<\/strong><\/p>\n

The conversation began with a creative demonstration led by Hogan, who invited Semple and participants to explore art using ink and natural materials, such as tobacco leaves dried flowers.<\/p>\n

Hogan shared how creating handmade artwork has become part of her personal and professional practice, providing an opportunity to slow down, reflect and connect with the land.<\/p>\n

She explained that incorporating art into her routine has also helped her process information and embrace creativity as part of her own learning journey.<\/p>\n

Shaping NC’s Indigenous Education Strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n

A key focus of the conversation was Hogan’s work helping to develop Paddling Together<\/em>, NC’s recently launched Indigenous Education Strategy.<\/p>\n

Hogan reflected on the collaborative process behind the strategy, including listening to the experiences and perspectives of Indigenous students, faculty, staff and the broader College community.<\/p>\n

“To understand what it needed to be was really to step back and let the stories be the direction,” Hogan said.<\/p>\n

She emphasized that the strategy reflects a shared vision shaped by the College’s learning community and spoke about the collective responsibility of bringing its priorities to life.<\/p>\n

“It was the vision of our learning community here at NC,” she said.<\/p>\n

A personal journey shaped by education<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hogan also reflected on her personal educational journey, sharing the experiences and influences that shaped her career path and inspired her commitment to supporting Indigenous students and creating more inclusive learning environments.<\/p>\n

Throughout the discussion, Semple highlighted the connection between Hogan’s lived experiences, her collaborative leadership and her dedication to creating supportive environments where Indigenous students can thrive.<\/p>\n

Hogan emphasized the importance of meeting students where they are and ensuring they feel welcomed, supported and free from judgment.<\/p>\n

“We just receive them as they are,” Hogan said, reflecting on the approach taken by the Indigenous Education team.<\/p>\n

to compete at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Golf Championships.<\/p>\n<p>The second-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/sport-management\/\">Sport Management<\/a> student represented NC at the national competition, held October 13 to 16 at Le Blainvillier Golf Club in Blainville, Quebec, marking the program’s first female appearance at nationals since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Templeman competed individually at the national championship, accompanied by Knights golf head coach J.J. Alexander, who is in his first year leading the program.<\/p>\n<p>For Templeman, the experience was a milestone in her 11-year golf journey and a chance to showcase the College’s golf program on a national stage.<\/p>\n<p>“I was proud to represent Niagara College on a national stage and bring awareness to the school,” said Templeman. “It was an honour to be the one to bring us back!”<\/p>\n<p>Templeman earned her spot at nationals following a strong comeback at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships in London, Ontario, where she improved her performance over three rounds of competition.<\/p>\n<p>“Looking back, I’m most proud of my provincials performance,” she said. “This gritty performance is what I will take with me into the future both on and off the golf course.”<\/p>\n<p>At the CCAA Championships, Templeman faced challenging conditions throughout the four-round tournament, including cold temperatures and persistent rain that tested competitors on the course.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the weather, she persevered through the challenging conditions and gained valuable experience at her first national championship.<\/p>\n<p>Among her memorable moments was making a 20-foot putt for par on the 14<sup>th<\/sup> hole during her third round, connecting with fellow competitors and sharing the experience with Alexander, who was also attending his first national championship as head coach.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1700931 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/11\/ocaagolf-8396_55557869184_o.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/11\/ocaagolf-8396_55557869184_o.webp 440w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/11\/ocaagolf-8396_55557869184_o-240x300.webp 240w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/11\/ocaagolf-8396_55557869184_o-288x360.webp 288w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/11\/ocaagolf-8396_55557869184_o-180x225.webp 180w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/11\/ocaagolf-8396_55557869184_o-108x135.webp 108w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/11\/ocaagolf-8396_55557869184_o-432x540.webp 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>“I’m most proud of my relentless battle and unwillingness to give up,” said Templeman. “Nationals was the cumulative result of 11 years of loving (and hating) this game!”<\/p>\n<p>For Alexander, Templeman’s opportunity to compete at nationals was an exciting achievement for both the student-athlete and the Knights golf program.<\/p>\n<p>“Being my first year as coach of the Niagara College Knights golf team, it was great to see Hazel qualify for the National Championships,” said Alexander. “This was an exciting achievement for Hazel, but it also provided valuable experience for our program as we look to develop and motivate our team for the seasons ahead.”<\/p>\n<p>Alexander praised Templeman’s growth and resilience throughout the season, particularly her comeback performance at the provincial championships.<\/p>\n<p>“It was rewarding to watch Hazel’s game progress as she gained more competitive experience throughout the season,” he said. “At the Ontario Championships in London, Hazel got off to a slow start, but the way she responded and bounced back was impressive.”<\/p>\n<p>With Templeman and several other players expected to return next season, Alexander is optimistic about the future of the Knights golf program. The experience gave them an opportunity to recognize how leadership roles and group behaviours influence a team’s ability to work together.<\/p>\n<p>For first-year student Sofia Rodriguez of Welland, the experience offered valuable insight into her own motivation and how she can apply that understanding in her future career as a Recreation Therapist.<\/p>\n<p>“Throughout this experience I learned that I’m more motivated to achieve goals in a group setting than when working independently,” said Rodriguez. “While challenging myself on the high ropes course and rock-climbing wall, I felt less pressure to succeed because the outcome depended solely on my own efforts. However, when working toward a shared group goal, knowing that others were relying on me motivated me to push beyond my limits and put forth greater effort.”<\/p>\n<p>The experience fundamentally reshaped Rodriguez’s perspective on leadership. She realized that high-performing groups thrive when multiple members step forward to contribute their unique strengths, a shift that underscores the power of teamwork, encouragement, and shared responsibility in overcoming obstacles. By facilitating activities and guiding participants, the volunteers had an opportunity to practice skills that are central to Recreation Therapy, where planning, leading and adapting activities to meet participants’ needs are important parts of the profession.<\/p>\n<p>“It was rewarding to encourage first-year students to step outside their comfort zones and discover what they’re capable of,” said second-year student Stuart Scott-Field. “Sometimes, the greatest accomplishment isn’t completing a challenge but having the courage to try. Leadership Camp is a fantastic experience and one I feel very fortunate to have been able to experience twice.”<\/p>\n<p>“What I hope students take away from Leadership Camp is that everyone has a role to play and that effective leadership can look different for each person.
