Students from the\u00a0<\/span>Computer\u00a0Systems\u00a0Technician\u00a0(CST)<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Computer\u00a0Programming\u00a0(CP)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Computer\u00a0Programming and\u00a0Analysis\u00a0(CPA)<\/span><\/a> programs crowded the halls of The Core on NC’s Welland Campus on April 6 to celebrate student success at their end-of-year event. A platter of retro video games and delicious snacks, individual awards recognizing student excellence, and friendly connection and conversation left students and employees leaving The Core smiling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the video games<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0such as\u00a0<\/span>Mario Kart: Double Dash<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Super Smash Bros<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0were\u00a0a popular draw amongst students, the\u00a0main highlight was the\u00a0recognition of\u00a0student excellence.\u00a0Professors\u00a0Jim Schinkel,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in the School of Technology,\u00a0and Melissa\u00a0VanderLely,\u00a0in the School of Media Studies, were thrilled for their students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It was a\u00a0really\u00a0relaxed\u00a0atmosphere,” said Schinkel. “Students came in, played video games, had food, and then we had the award ceremony. It was\u00a0a nice way\u00a0to unwind and celebrate everything they have done.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Schinkel recapped the layout of the room to create an automatic visual:\u00a0a\u00a0Wii set up on the overhead projector with four chairs and controllers;\u00a0multiplayer races off to the side by the pool tables; four consoles beside the\u00a0arcade-style\u00a0basketball\u00a0game; and lots of\u00a0pizza, chicken bites and other snacky foods.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both\u00a0Schinkel\u00a0and\u00a0VanderLely\u00a0spoke\u00a0proudly\u00a0of\u00a0their\u00a0students\u00a0and the efforts they\u00a0put in\u00a0to get them there.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“They put in that\u00a0work,\u00a0they put in that effort and they’ve asked questions,” said Schinkel. “But\u00a0it’s\u00a0also awesome to see what they do\u00a0outside of the classroom.\u00a0Broadening their horizons through things like building their own Minecraft servers. Learning\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0just happen inside of the classroom.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We want students to know they are\u00a0appreciated\u00a0and it’s important to celebrate what they’ve accomplished,” said\u00a0VanderLely. “It’s a great opportunity for us to tell them that we noticed, and\u00a0for them to connect with one another and meet students\u00a0from other levels of the programs.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While overall program success was celebrated, one student from each program received the\u00a0honour\u00a0of the Associate Dean’s Award of Excellence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Associate Dean’s Award of Excellence Recipients<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

John Rookwood, CPA<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hailing from St. Catharines and currently finishing his second year\u00a0at NC,\u00a0Rookwood\u00a0will be graduating from the CP program\u00a0after a late-year switch to the program.\u00a0His work ethic,\u00a0consistent support of his classmates\u00a0and ambassadorial presence\u00a0in the CPA program\u00a0helped him earn this award and\u00a0left\u00a0a lasting impression\u00a0on\u00a0VanderLely.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“John is somebody who is always here working on projects, day or night,” said\u00a0VanderLely. “He’s\u00a0at every open house speaking to prospective students,\u00a0he’s\u00a0a fantastic teammate,\u00a0and he has a work ethic that\u00a0is almost contagious to those who work with him.\u00a0He’s\u00a0a fantastic ambassador for our program.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rookwood was\u00a0flattered\u00a0but humble\u00a0in his acceptance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m\u00a0honoured\u00a0to receive this award, but I also see so many other talented, hard-working people in this program.\u00a0I’m\u00a0very thankful to have been recognized.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rookwood’s next step will see him enter NC’s\u00a0<\/span>Cybersecurity<\/span><\/a>\u00a0program, where\u00a0he’ll\u00a0be\u00a0bringing\u00a0the\u00a0skills\u00a0he has already learned at NC\u00a0with him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Basically\u00a0everything I’ve already learned at NC has some applicability to cybersecurity,” he said. “Even beyond technical skills, things like problem solving and working with groups, which can be\u00a0undersold\u00a0on importance at times. Being able to work with a team plays massive importance in finishing projects.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeonghwan Oh, CP<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A second-year CP student, Oh’s outstanding performance over the course of his NC career was not missed\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0VanderLely, who sung high praise for the\u00a0Yongin-si, South Korea\u00a0native.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Jeonghwan\u00a0is just an excellent, well-rounded person,” she said. “He shows up every day, puts in a full effort,\u00a0he’s\u00a0gracious to his classmates and is there to help whenever they need him.\u00a0He’s\u00a0a consistently strong contributor of team cohesion.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Oh’s interpersonal skills have helped get him to this point,\u00a0VanderLely\u00a0is\u00a0also impressed with his talent.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“He’s\u00a0a very skilled programmer.\u00a0We\u00a0held a\u00a0<\/span>coding competition<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in our department and\u00a0Jeonghwan\u00a0helped\u00a0come up with\u00a0the problems they were solving\u00a0and\u00a0helped run the competition.\u00a0The opportunities that he has been involved in came about because he put himself in that position.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, who studied contemporary music in South Korea before coming to Canada in 2024,\u00a0enjoyed the experiential aspect of the CP program, especially the fourth-semester community sponsored project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We were tasked with building applications for real-world clients, and for me, this\u00a0was developing a client management system for a\u00a0physiotherapy\u00a0studio,” said Oh. “Being placed into a situation with real-world constraints and regulations was a valuable experience.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the work he put in during his time at NC, Oh credited the people he has met along the way for their part in his development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s\u00a0always a good thing to have good people\u00a0around.\u00a0The support from the faculty and my classmates has\u00a0been great,” said Oh. “This event allowed us to reminisce, play some Mario\u00a0Kart\u00a0and enjoy hanging out with\u00a0our\u00a0peers and\u00a0professors.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Liam Neill, CST<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A second-year student from Niagara Falls, Neill reminisced about his time in the program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’ve really found a passion for technology, and being recognized for something that I’ve come to love is an\u00a0honour,” he said. “If\u00a0I’m\u00a0going to do something,\u00a0I’m\u00a0going to give it 100 per cent.\u00a0So,\u00a0to be recognized for two years of\u00a0hard work, getting my assignments done and passing tests, it was really\u00a0kind of like\u00a0that payoff.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Neill closes in on his graduation, he mentioned his particular interest in cloud, physical and software networking.\u00a0He credits the CST program\u00a0with\u00a0teaching\u00a0him<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0variety of skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We learned a lot of things like troubleshooting, hardware skills, server-building, programming and script-building skills,” he said of the CST program. “And\u00a0also\u00a0interpersonal skills like teamwork, problem-solving, time\u00a0management\u00a0and organizational skills.\u00a0It’s\u00a0a well-rounded program that has taught\u00a0me\u00a0a lot.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Schinkel, one of Neill’s professors, spoke highly of him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Liam is one of those students that works hard to\u00a0get himself\u00a0ahead,”\u00a0he\u00a0said. “He talks to everybody in\u00a0class,\u00a0he has\u00a0a very positive\u00a0attitude and\u00a0he’s\u00a0never afraid to ask for help or\u00a0assistance\u00a0if needed. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Liam that he whole-heartedly deserves.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The CST, CP and CPA programs open plenty of doors<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for their students, such as Neill’s interest\u00a0in networking and\u00a0Rookwood’s\u00a0in\u00a0cybersecurity.\u00a0VanderLely\u00a0spoke highly of the potential that the CP and CPA programs give their students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Our program really positions you well to make future decisions,” she said. “It’s\u00a0about building that\u00a0strong foundation\u00a0and then seeing where you want to take it. We try to display a lot of different possibilities so students can take their diploma in computer programming anywhere.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While proud of his\u00a0students’\u00a0accomplishments\u00a0and the foundation they have built for themselves,\u00a0Schinkel\u00a0emphasized\u00a0that the road to career success does not stop here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’re\u00a0here to help lay out the\u00a0groundwork and build those foundational tools, but\u00a0we’re\u00a0not going to take you to\u00a0your\u00a0end point\u00a0–\u00a0we’re\u00a0going to put you on a path to your end point.\u00a0It’s\u00a0always good to keep learning, even after school.”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
