Restaurant and organized by Indigenous Career Consultant Cathy Smith, the events took place over two evenings in late March and were open to all current Indigenous students and alumni. The events offered attendees the opportunity to connect with potential employers, ask questions in a comfortable and welcoming environment and gain insider advice on building and maintaining relationships with industry professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“For Indigenous Peoples, community is so important,” said Smith. “This event brought together employers who want to hire Indigenous workers, who understand the importance of community, and who are committed to supporting Indigenous Peoples as they succeed in their careers while reclaiming their identities.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Titled\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meals & Motivation: A Career Connections Networking Event<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the initiative combined professional development with a shared dining experience\u00a0and featured a relaxed atmosphere where guests enjoyed\u00a0appetizers,\u00a0entr\u00e9es\u00a0and dessert while employers went table to table,\u00a0sharing career advice, interview preparation tips,\u00a0growth opportunities within their data-contrast=\"auto\">For third-year\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/game-development\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Game Development<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0student Kayanna Saylor of St. Catharines, Meals & Motivation inspired confidence as she moves toward graduation this\u00a0June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“Transitioning into a career after school can be nerve-wracking,\u00a0but this event removed some of that stress and helped us focus on how we can best position ourselves for life after school,” she said. “Learning about things like communicating with employers from\u00a0employers themselves was integral for me as I take my next step.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While Saylor’s education at NC is nearly completed,\u00a0she’s\u00a0excited for\u00a0incoming Indigenous students to get to\u00a0experience\u00a0the College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“I think they’re coming at a really good time,” she said. “The staff are putting in amazing work like bringing in speakers from the community, hosting community events like bingo night and fighting for you in support of your journey.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across both evenings, more than 30 students connected with over 20 employers\u00a0representing\u00a0a range of industries, including healthcare, community services, financial institutions, skilled trades, and law enforcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<div Motivation<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0event hosted by Niagara College’s Indigenous Education Department was a thoughtfully designed experience,” shared OG7GES Indigenous Group Inc. “As an Indigenous business, we truly recognize and value the intention behind it. This is what real support looks like – not a job fair, but a space where Indigenous students can connect meaningfully with employers who genuinely want to support them.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Smith, the impact on participating students was clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“It\u00a0opened\u00a0the eyes of our students to the possibilities that are out there for them.\u00a0When I asked students if they would attend again, it was\u00a0a unanimous\u00a0yes. The same goes for the employers. helping them understand the Canadian education system and guiding them through the processes required to arrive and study in Canada. Their visits to Niagara College deepen their understanding of NC’s offerings and culture, equipping them to share meaningful, firsthand insights with their students.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to NC’s Spring and Fall Open Houses, the annual FAM Tour offers participants an invaluable opportunity to discover why NC is a top choice for students from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>“When recruitment partners experience our campuses, our people, and the Niagara Region firsthand, they return home as informed and confident ambassadors for Niagara College,” said Orel Ruiz, Director, Global Business Development & Global Campus Operations. “In a rapidly changing international education landscape, their role is critical in helping students make informed decisions, and we are pleased to welcome this year’s participants to experience the strength of NC’s applied, student-focused approach, which continues to position us among Canada’s leading global colleges.”<\/p>\n<p>This immersive experience includes campus tours showcasing NC’s state-of-the-art facilities and innovative learning environments. between programs evolved into a powerful display of school spirit as plastic swords and homemade shields decked the halls of Niagara College’s Simplii Financial Athletic Centre in Welland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On March 25, NC students\u202fparticipated\u202fin the inaugural Noble Games, a medieval-themed series of athletic challenges between academic schools and program areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first competition took place between students in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/alliedhealth\/program\/paramedic\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Paramedic<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0program and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/justiceandfitness\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">School of Justice<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, after the Paramedic program\u202finitiated\u202fa friendly challenge between the two. The event was designed to strengthen connections between students and their programs, while also supporting wellness, inclusion and opportunities for personal and professional growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“We built the Noble Games around a concept, an event\u202fthat was fun, social, and a break from the usual routine,” said Jenna Wilson, Niagara College’s Campus Recreation Coordinator. “It’s about giving students a reason to show up, connect with each other and feel part of something. The energy in the gym that day just took off — it was electric. The students understood the assignment and delivered, showing up with team colours, capes and banners. The atmosphere was beyond what we were hoping for.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“Niagara College prides itself on being student-focused and passionate. Watching the Noble Games, I saw students, faculty and staff who are\u202fincredibly\u202fstudent-focused and passionate,” said Scott Wade, NC’s Associate Dean of the School of Justice and Fitness. “The Athletic staff created a platform for healthy competition and passionate engagement. I saw faculty members who led the charge, playing on the teams with the students and cheering them on. Paramedics and Policing are noble professions, and the traits displayed by the students are reflective of those professions; teamwork, passion, support, physical fitness and\u202fcompetition. He was drawn to the event by its inclusive environment and the opportunity to take on a leadership role as one of the student organizers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“The multi-sport aspect of it ensured that everyone was included,” said Abbott, who played on the Golden Basilisks and hails from Chippawa. “I love basketball, but the next person might love boccia. It allowed people to customize their experience in their own way.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">“The leadership opportunity was incredible,” he added. “I was able to use skills that\u202fI’ve\u202flearned in school to spread interest in the event and connect with other students. You know everyone and you have lots of people in your corner. And\u202fI think this event\u202fembodied those same values.\u202fWe’ve\u202fbeen able to build bonds and develop a strong but sportsmanlike rivalry with another program. It started with us working together with strangers and ended with new friendships and friendly, joking rivalries.”<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For both Abbott and Gamble, a rematch is already in mind for next fall. While Roberts is set to graduate, she enjoyed the event so much that she plans to return to\u202fparticipate — or at least cheer on the next competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the overwhelming success of the event, Campus Recreation is already looking ahead to future Noble Games competitions, with potential to expand beyond athletic events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How to\u202fparticipate\u202fin future Noble Games challenges:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Any academic program can\u202fparticipate, and getting involved is simple. appearance to date.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Niagara College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/game-development\/\">Game Development<\/a> students returned from Toronto with trunks a little fuller, bringing home five gold trophies (including the coveted People’s Choice award) from the <a href=\"https:\/\/levelupshowcase.com\/\">Level Up Showcase<\/a> for video game innovation on April 7.<\/p>\n<p>Four Niagara College student teams earned five awards at Level Up, an annual event featuring 160 post-secondary teams from across Ontario competing for 18 awards while showcasing their work, connecting with industry professionals, receiving live feedback, and competing for top honours.<\/p>\n<p>Student teams included participants from Niagara College and Brock University’s joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/ba-arts-game-design\/\">Honours BA in Game Design<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/bsc-game-programming\/\">Honours BSc in Game Programming<\/a>, as well as Niagara College’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/game-development\/\">Game Development<\/a> diploma programs.<\/p>\n<p>The event drew thousands to the Sheraton Toronto Centre.<\/p>\n<p>“Niagara College is proud of the outstanding achievements of our students and faculty in a province-wide competition that highlights some of the strongest work by emerging game developers,” said Michelle Giroux, Associate Dean of NC’s School of Media Studies. “Their success reflects the calibre of talent, innovation, and technical skill within our community. To see how universally loved their games appeared to be across the showcase, in front of thousands of people made it really special. We learned a lot of stuff like math and physics at Brock, and a lot of application like game design aspects and thought processes at NC. Tying the two together made for an awesome experience.”<\/p>\n<p>Shotunde said that the interpersonal skills he developed made Level Up and other experiential opportunities even more meaningful and impactful.<\/p>\n<p>“I think it pays a lot to be authentic and genuine,” he said. “You don’t want to step on anyone’s toes, but to be able to move around, get to know people, play their games and be friendly with everyone was great. This was eight months of hard work,” she said. “The process of ensuring accessibility for all was made easier by our team’s cohesion. We needed to check what we could do in-house and then decide how to use that to create that accessibility.”<\/p>\n<p>Saylor, who served as the team’s accessibility designer, said titles such as Call of Duty and The Last of Us influenced their approach to accessibility in gameplay. She explained that the team’s work included designing the HUD (heads-up display), developing a font guide, and creating an accessible typeface with thicker, more legible lines.<\/p>\n<p>“Accessibility shouldn’t be an afterthought; it should always be important,” she said. “Design is a conversation that everyone can join in on. Technology (Co-op)<\/a> program students at Niagara College saw firsthand that local opportunities in advanced manufacturing remains strong, even amid global uncertainty, during recent tours of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innio.com\/en\/\">INNIO<\/a>, a leading energy solutions company operating in Welland at full capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Two groups – students in years one and three – visited the facility on March 11 and 18, guided by part-time professor Sukant Chatterjee, who also works there as a Machining Operations Leader. Chatterjee teaches Advanced Metrology, among other courses, and used the tour to connect course concepts with real-world applications.<\/p>\n<p>Professors Joseph Otta and Neil Walker joined students as they observed how engines are built during an assembly tour that included testing and painting operations.<\/p>\n<p>In the machine shop, students saw advanced equipment in action, including a gantry coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with a REVO head, CNC mill-turn and grinding processes, crankshaft and crankcase machining, and a large multi-head CNC milling machine with line-bore systems.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of the operation stood out.<\/p>\n<p>“Sukant highlighted a very large gantry CMM, likely among the largest in the world, and the facility’s increasing capacity with recent equipment investments,” said Otta. “We also witnessed the first engine block being machined on a newly commissioned $5 million CNC machine from Japan.”<\/p>\n<p>Students were equally engaged by the people behind the work, including peers on co-op and NC alum.<\/p>\n<p>“The Year One students were particularly excited to see our program graduates and co-op students working there,” Otta said. A current junior co-op student also helped guide the tour and shared their experience.<\/p>\n<p>The visit reinforced strong demand for skilled graduates. INNIO’s machine shop employs 90 technicians across three shifts and continues to grow.<\/p>\n<p>“Last year we hired 10 students from the college, and this year we have already hired two,” said Chatterjee. “We are growing quickly to meet demand while maintaining safety, quality, and delivery.”<\/p>\n<p>The Mechanical Engineering programs at NC are designed to prepare students for this demand, requiring them to complete two co-op work terms that provide direct industry experience before graduation.<\/p>\n<p>The tour reinforced the value of hands-on skills that remain difficult to automate.<\/p>\n<p>“These are durable competencies that are highly resistant to AI,” said Otta, noting areas such as precision machining and advanced metrology. “They position our graduates very well for long-term career stability.”<\/p>\n<p>Despite broader challenges tied to tariffs and supply chains, INNIO has remained resilient through diversification and is continuing to expand capacity.<\/p>\n<p>For NC students, the experience connected classroom learning with real-world impact and highlighted clear pathways into a thriving industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NC Professor Sukant Chatterjee and Machining Operation Leader at INNIO points to steady hiring of recent NC graduates.
