Healthy Debate<\/em> highlighted NC’s support of a research initiative led by the Niagara Family Physician Dementia Care Community of Practice (CoP), which is exploring new tools to help assess driving fitness among individuals living with dementia.<\/p>\n

The article notes that NC allocated dedicated space for the driving simulator to support its long-term availability and provided funding for the first phase of the study. A second phase of the research, currently in development, will compare simulator results with on-road driving assessments for a cohort of 50 patients.<\/p>\n

advertising and design before reassessing his future after a serious car accident left his wife with significant back and neck injuries, inspiring him to pursue a new career in healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>“All it took was one step forward and all of a sudden, I feel like I’m miles away from where I was,” said Vicentini in the interview. “I would never have guessed I would be doing this now, but life has a way of steering you and you’ve got to let go of the wheel for a bit and see where it takes you.”<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his NC journey, Vicentini added: “When you do something you really like, something you feel like you’re really good at, you want to learn more. I have this thirst for knowledge. examining how postsecondary institutions, the National Research Council (NRC), and industry partners can help advance Canada’s defence and dual-use research priorities, particularly in relation to class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Nantel speaks before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A respected leader in applied research and innovation, Dr. Nantel brought decades of scientific, academic, and industry experience to the discussion. He earned a Bachelor of Science (1987) and Master of Science (1990) in Physics from McGill University, followed by a PhD (1994) from the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique – \u00c9nergie, Mat\u00e9riaux et T\u00e9l\u00e9communications (INRS). After completing postdoctoral research in France and at the University of Michigan, where he focused on ultrafast laser-produced visible and X-ray pulses and their applications, he went on to serve as an Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of Toronto from 1998 to 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, Dr. Nantel highlighted the critical role colleges play in building Canada’s skilled workforce.<\/p>\n<p>“Our graduates are the backbone of industry: for every PhD, MBA or engineer in a company, there are many more tradespeople, technicians, and technologists who support them,” said Dr. Nantel.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to emphasize the importance of developing a highly skilled workforce to meet emerging defence and security challenges. He pointed to NC’s leadership in launching Canada’s first defence-focused public post-secondary education programs: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/defence-systems-engineering-technician\/\">Defence Systems Engineering Technician<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/defence-systems-engineering-technology\/\">Defence Systems Engineering Technology<\/a> (DSET) programs.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Nantel also highlighted Niagara College’s extensive applied research operations and its potential to strengthen Canada’s defence capabilities across multiple sectors. Through centres such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/advanced-manufacturing\">Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre<\/a> (WAMIC), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/food-and-beverage\">Food and Beverage Innovation Centre<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/horticultural-and-environmental-sciences\">Horticultural and Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/healthy-aging-and-wellness\">Healthy Ageing and Wellness Innovation Centre<\/a>, NC is developing practical, industry-driven solutions with applications in both civilian and defence environments.<\/p>\n<p>The appearance before the Committee served as a fitting capstone to Dr. Nantel’s distinguished career in research and innovation leadership. Retiring from Niagara College at the end of June, Dr. Nantel has been instrumental in building one of Canada’s leading college research enterprises, helping position NC as a national leader in applied research, industry collaboration, and workforce development. Many had never heard of Niagara College, which made it especially meaningful to share who we are, what we offer and how we can help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.”<\/p>\n<p>As part of the event’s Career and Education Fair, Mandamin and Bruinsma met with students interested in learning more about NC programs and the supports available to Indigenous learners. Those conversations often centred on belonging, community, and access to culturally relevant resources.<\/p>\n<p>“One of the questions we were asked most often was about the supports available to Indigenous learners,” said Mandamin. “Students want to know they’ll feel welcomed, supported and connected to a community that understands their needs. They’re looking for guidance throughout their educational journey, and it was important for us to share the services, resources, and culturally relevant supports available at NC.”<\/p>\n<p>NC’s presence at <em>Soaring<\/em> extended beyond participation in the Career and Education Fair. As a Presentation Sponsor, it reinforced its commitment to supporting Indigenous youth and expanding access to post-secondary opportunities for First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis learners across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>This commitment was also reflected in its IE’s visual identity which was front and centre throughout the gathering. Featured on recruitment materials and the department’s vehicle, which was funded through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2024\/09\/03\/embark-student-foundation-grants-500000-towards-new-indigenous-student-success-pathways-project\/\">Embark Student Foundation and the Indigenous Student Success Pathways Project<\/a>, IE’s imagery and artwork was a visible expression of representation and helped spark conversations while highlighting how the College celebrates Indigenous cultures, identities, and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>“Representation matters. Identity matters,” said Mandamin. “The artwork, materials, and conversations we shared were opportunities to demonstrate that Niagara College values Indigenous learners and is committed to creating an environment where students can see themselves reflected and supported.”<\/p>\n<p>While events like <em>Soaring<\/em> help raise awareness of Niagara College among prospective students, they also play a significant role in building relationships with Indigenous communities across Canada. The national gathering provided an opportunity to engage with Indigenous youth from communities spanning every region of the country, helping expand awareness of Niagara College and its programs well beyond Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond recruitment, Mandamin views participation in events like <em>Soaring<\/em> as an investment in long-term relationship building.<\/p>\n<p>“Trust takes time. Relationships take time,” she said. “You can’t just show up and expect immediate results. It’s about creating awareness, building connections, and becoming a familiar presence. Hopefully, over time, we’ll see those relationships grow.”<\/p>\n<p>For Bruinsma, the experience reinforced the importance of sharing NC’s evolving network of Indigenous supports and services.<\/p>\n<p>“We still have work to do, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve made,” she said. “We have a fantastic Indigenous Education team who work hard to develop strong partnerships across the College and within the community, and we are here to help students navigate every aspect of college life, from financial aid and housing to cultural supports and student success.”<\/p>\n<p>Participation in <em>Soaring<\/em> is one example of how NC continues to invest in Indigenous student recruitment, engagement, and success. The College remains committed to advancing access to post-secondary education opportunities for First Nations, M\u00e9tis, and Inuit learners and supporting Indigenous youth as they pursue their educational and career goals.
