Reporter Victoria Nicolaou of the St. Catharines Standard<\/em> covered Niagara College’s Spring Convocation celebrations, noting that approximately 7,000 graduates participated in the College’s largest spring convocation to date.<\/p>\n

The article highlights the story of Personal Support Worker (PSW) graduate Adrian Vicentini, who spent much of his career in advertising and design before reassessing his future after a serious car accident left his wife with significant back and neck injuries, inspiring him to pursue a new career in healthcare.<\/p>\n

“All it took was one step forward and all of a sudden, I feel like I’m miles away from where I was,” said Vicentini in the interview. “I would never have guessed I would be doing this now, but life has a way of steering you and you’ve got to let go of the wheel for a bit and see where it takes you.”<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his NC journey, Vicentini added: “When you do something you really like, something you feel like you’re really good at, you want to learn more. I have this thirst for knowledge. I want to just keep expanding and keep going and see where it takes me.”<\/p>\n

The article also notes that, as part of the week-long convocation celebrations, NC honoured Bob Martin, a respected leader in Niagara’s horticulture sector and former general manager of Martin Farms Ltd., with an honorary diploma.<\/p>\n

examining how postsecondary institutions, the National Research Council (NRC), and industry partners can help advance Canada’s defence and dual-use research priorities, particularly in relation to class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Nantel speaks before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A respected leader in applied research and innovation, Dr. Nantel brought decades of scientific, academic, and industry experience to the discussion. He earned a Bachelor of Science (1987) and Master of Science (1990) in Physics from McGill University, followed by a PhD (1994) from the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique – \u00c9nergie, Mat\u00e9riaux et T\u00e9l\u00e9communications (INRS). After completing postdoctoral research in France and at the University of Michigan, where he focused on ultrafast laser-produced visible and X-ray pulses and their applications, he went on to serve as an Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of Toronto from 1998 to 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, Dr. Nantel highlighted the critical role colleges play in building Canada’s skilled workforce.<\/p>\n<p>“Our graduates are the backbone of industry: for every PhD, MBA or engineer in a company, there are many more tradespeople, technicians, and technologists who support them,” said Dr. Nantel.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to emphasize the importance of developing a highly skilled workforce to meet emerging defence and security challenges. He pointed to NC’s leadership in launching Canada’s first defence-focused public post-secondary education programs: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/defence-systems-engineering-technician\/\">Defence Systems Engineering Technician<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/defence-systems-engineering-technology\/\">Defence Systems Engineering Technology<\/a> (DSET) programs.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Nantel also highlighted Niagara College’s extensive applied research operations and its potential to strengthen Canada’s defence capabilities across multiple sectors. Through centres such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/advanced-manufacturing\">Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre<\/a> (WAMIC), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/food-and-beverage\">Food and Beverage Innovation Centre<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/horticultural-and-environmental-sciences\">Horticultural and Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/innovation-centres\/healthy-aging-and-wellness\">Healthy Ageing and Wellness Innovation Centre<\/a>, NC is developing practical, industry-driven solutions with applications in both civilian and defence environments.<\/p>\n<p>The appearance before the Committee served as a fitting capstone to Dr. Nantel’s distinguished career in research and innovation leadership. Retiring from Niagara College at the end of June, Dr. Nantel has been instrumental in building one of Canada’s leading college research enterprises, helping position NC as a national leader in applied research, industry collaboration, and workforce development. Many had never heard of Niagara College, which made it especially meaningful to share who we are, what we offer and how we can help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.”<\/p>\n<p>As part of the event’s Career and Education Fair, Mandamin and Bruinsma met with students interested in learning more about NC programs and the supports available to Indigenous learners. Those conversations often centred on belonging, community, and access to culturally relevant resources.<\/p>\n<p>“One of the questions we were asked most often was about the supports available to Indigenous learners,” said Mandamin. “Students want to know they’ll feel welcomed, supported and connected to a community that understands their needs. They’re looking for guidance throughout their educational journey, and it was important for us to share the services, resources, and culturally relevant supports available at NC.”<\/p>\n<p>NC’s presence at <em>Soaring<\/em> extended beyond participation in the Career and Education Fair. As a Presentation Sponsor, it reinforced its commitment to supporting Indigenous youth and expanding access to post-secondary opportunities for First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis learners across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>This commitment was also reflected in its IE’s visual identity which was front and centre throughout the gathering. Featured on recruitment materials and the department’s vehicle, which was funded through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2024\/09\/03\/embark-student-foundation-grants-500000-towards-new-indigenous-student-success-pathways-project\/\">Embark Student Foundation and the Indigenous Student Success Pathways Project<\/a>, IE’s imagery and artwork was a visible expression of representation and helped spark conversations while highlighting how the College celebrates Indigenous cultures, identities, and experiences.<\/p>\n<p>“Representation matters. Identity matters,” said Mandamin. “The artwork, materials, and conversations we shared were opportunities to demonstrate that Niagara College values Indigenous learners and is committed to creating an environment where students can see themselves reflected and supported.”<\/p>\n<p>While events like <em>Soaring<\/em> help raise awareness of Niagara College among prospective students, they also play a significant role in building relationships with Indigenous communities across Canada. The national gathering provided an opportunity to engage with Indigenous youth from communities spanning every region of the country, helping expand awareness of Niagara College and its programs well beyond Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond recruitment, Mandamin views participation in events like <em>Soaring<\/em> as an investment in long-term relationship building.<\/p>\n<p>“Trust takes time. Relationships take time,” she said. “You can’t just show up and expect immediate results. It’s about creating awareness, building connections, and becoming a familiar presence. Hopefully, over time, we’ll see those relationships grow.”<\/p>\n<p>For Bruinsma, the experience reinforced the importance of sharing NC’s evolving network of Indigenous supports and services.<\/p>\n<p>“We still have work to do, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve made,” she said. “We have a fantastic Indigenous Education team who work hard to develop strong partnerships across the College and within the community, and we are here to help students navigate every aspect of college life, from financial aid and housing to cultural supports and student success.”<\/p>\n<p>Participation in <em>Soaring<\/em> is one example of how NC continues to invest in Indigenous student recruitment, engagement, and success. The College remains committed to advancing access to post-secondary education opportunities for First Nations, M\u00e9tis, and Inuit learners and supporting Indigenous youth as they pursue their educational and career goals. handshakes, Niagara College officially concluded its largest ever Spring Convocation on Saturday, June 13.<\/p>\n<p>The marathon event marked a historic milestone for the College, adding approximately 7,000 new graduates to its global alumni family of well over 150,000.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the week, the Welland Campus transformed into a hub of celebration that highlighted how the College directly supports crucial economic sectors, with new graduates ready to bring applied knowledge and hands-on experience to the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday’s final ceremonies brought a dynamic close to the week, celebrating more than 1,600 graduates from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/\">School of Business and Management<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollegetoronto.ca\/\">\u00a0Niagara College Toronto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Niagara College president Sean Kennedy challenged the Class of 2026 to embrace the future with passion. He left the new graduates with a powerful prompt, quoting poet Mary Oliver’s poem, “The Summer Day” asking them what they plan to do with their “one wild and precious life.”<\/p>\n<p>“Graduates, your ‘wild and precious life’ is yours to design. You had a plan when you came to NC, an interest that informed your program choice, that has hopefully grown into a passion upon which you will build a career,” said Kennedy. “Your plan may have changed since you started, and it may change many more times as you build the life you wish to live.”<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged the Class of 2026 to prioritize connection with people and nature, and to take time to unplug.<\/p>\n<p>“Wherever your ‘wild and precious life’ takes you next, know that your NC family is incredibly proud of you, and behind you every step of the way,” he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spring Convocation highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The College rang in Spring Convocation on June 8 with hundreds of future healthcare heroes crossing the stage among almost 1,045 graduates from the schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/alliedhealth\/\">Allied Health<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/healthsciences\/\">Health Sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/liberal\/\">Academic and Liberal Studies<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/\">Myhal School of Nursing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ceremonies on June 9 honoured more than 1,180 graduates from its schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/liberal\/\">Academic and Liberal Studies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/english\/\">English Language Studies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/healthsciences\/\">Health Sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/justiceandfitness\/\">\u00a0Justice and Fitness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/communityservices\/\">Community Services<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/\">Myhal School of Nursing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/communityservices\/program\/recreation-therapy\/\">Recreation Therapy<\/a>\u00a0graduate Alleeya Guthro (Welland) was honoured with the prestigious <strong>Governor General’s Bronze Academic Medal<\/strong>, for achieving the highest average in a diploma program.<\/p>\n<p>On June 10, the College recognized almost 980 graduates from the schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/culinaryarts\/\">Culinary Arts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/\">Hospitality and Tourism<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/\">Wine, Beer and Spirits<\/a>, providing an immediate boost to Niagara’s skilled labour force as a premier destination for tourism, as well as the schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/justiceandfitness\/\">Justice and Fitness<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/\">Trades<\/a>, equipped for careers that support safer, stronger communities and help fill critical workforce needs.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,115 graduates were honoured from the schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/\">Media<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/\">Trades<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/\">Technology<\/a>\u00a0on June 11, ready to bring their sought-after skills to Ontario’s tech and industry sectors.<\/p>\n<p>June 12 celebrated 910 graduates from the schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/\">Business and Management<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/\">Environment and Horticulture<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/\">Hospitality and Tourism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Governor General’s Silver Academic Medal<\/strong>\u00a0was awarded to Nashwa Higazy (St. Catharines), a graduate of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/\">Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources)<\/a>\u00a0program, for achieving the highest average in a degree program.<\/p>\n<p>This year’s <strong>Distinguished Alumni Award<\/strong>\u00a0was presented to Celeste Anderson (Toronto), CEO and co-founder of Digital Sports Administration Inc., who graduated from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/program\/tourism-management\/\">Tourism Management – Business Development<\/a>\u00a0program in 2020. grads, honoured guests celebrated on day five of NC’s Spring Convocation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 900 graduates celebrated their hard-earned credentials on June 12 as they crossed the stage during day five of Niagara College’s Spring 2026 Convocation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Mann<\/strong>, a member of the College’s Board of Governors, joined both ceremonies, addressing graduands on behalf of the Board. “We are deeply honoured to have been part of your incredible journey,” said Mann. “Your success is our success, and we can’t wait to witness your remarkable achievements that lie ahead.”<\/p>\n<p>The morning ceremony featured close to 500 graduates from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/\">School of Business and Management<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/\">School of Environment and Horticulture<\/a>, along with community member <strong>Bob Martin<\/strong> who received an Honorary Diploma in Environment and Horticulture from the College.<\/p>\n<p>Martin, a Lincoln, Ont. resident, is a pillar of the Canadian horticultural industry and served for decades as the General Manager of Martin Farms Ltd., a family-owned agricultural business in Vineland. Through major retailers across Ontario and the beloved “Veggie Guy” brand, Martin Farms brought quality greens to countless Canadian tables and has earned multiple industry accolades.<\/p>\n<p>“I have had the privilege of having a career in an industry with so many amazing, innovative leaders passionate about the field that they have chosen,” said Martin while addressing graduates. “I hope you can take the same passion for your careers as we have for ours. Your knowledge, innovation and hard work are the future we are stepping into.”<\/p>\n<p>A passionate advocate for the sector, Martin has lent his expertise to numerous industry boards over the years. He has also been a champion for NC, serving as a long-time member of an advisory board for the horticultural programs and as a past member and chair on the Niagara College Foundation Board.<\/p>\n<p>“I am overwhelmed and humbled by this award. Higazy also received her graduate certificate in Project Management on June 12 and is an alumna from NC’s Business Administration – Human Resources advanced diploma program (2024).<\/p>\n<p>The St. Catharines resident, who is originally from Sudan, is a mother of six who balanced full-time studies with work and family responsibilities throughout her academic journey. She addressed the Class of 2026 via a recorded video message as she was unable to attend the ceremony having recently given birth to her sixth child.<\/p>\n<p>A shining member of NC’s 125,000-plus alumni community, <strong>Celeste Anderson <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/program\/tourism-management\/\">Tourism Management – Business Development (Co-op)<\/a>, 2020) returned to her alma mater to accept the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson, a Toronto resident (originally from Winnipeg, MB) is CEO and Co-Founder of Digital Sports Administration Inc., where she develops and manages esports tournaments, gaming activations, and live events across North America. She is known for being Canada’s first female professional gamer, winner of the reality television series <em>King of the Nerds<\/em> (2013) – which landed her an appearance on <em>Conan<\/em> – and has received industry accolades, including a TrailBlazeHER in Gaming nomination at the GameHER Awards and the Halo Community Commendations award for Best Event Organizer. She currently serves on the executive team of Women of Halo as Director of Business Operations.<\/p>\n<p>Accepting the Distinguished Alumni Award during the ceremony was especially meaningful for Anderson, who graduated virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. She addressed the Class of 2026, sharing words of wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>“What I’ve learned since graduating is that success isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about working hard, staying passionate, maintaining a positive outlook, and continuing to move forward even when things feel uncertain,” she said.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson enrolled at NC as a mature student at age 30 and graduated from her program with a 97.52 GPA, receiving the Dean’s Award while overcoming a cancer diagnosis during her final semester. crossed the stage during day five of Niagara College's Spring 2026 Convocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Mann<\/strong>, a member of the College's Board of Governors,joined both ceremonies, addressing graduands on behalf of the Board. \"We are deeply honoured to have been part of your incredible journey,\" said Mann. \"Your success is our success, and we can't wait to witness your remarkable achievements that lie ahead.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The morning ceremony featured close to 500 graduates from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/\">School of Business and Management<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/\">School of Environment and Horticulture<\/a>, along with community member <strong>Bob Martin<\/strong> who received an Honorary Diploma in Environment and Horticulture from the College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin, a Lincoln, Ont. resident, is a pillar of the Canadian horticultural industry and served for decades as the General Manager of Martin Farms Ltd., a family-owned agricultural business in Vineland. Through major retailers across Ontario and the beloved “Veggie Guy” brand, Martin Farms brought quality greens to countless Canadian tables and has earned multiple industry accolades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"I have had the privilege of having a career in an industry with so many amazing, innovative leaders passionate about the field that they have chosen,\" said Martin while addressing graduates. \"I hope you can take the same passion for your careers as we have for ours. Your knowledge, innovation and hard work are the future we are stepping into.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A passionate advocate for the sector, Martin has lent his expertise to numerous industry boards over the years. He has also been a champion for NC, serving as a long-time member of an advisory board for the horticultural programs and as a past member and chair on the Niagara College Foundation Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"I am overwhelmed and humbled by this award. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this special day with you,\" he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\r\n\t<figure class=\"image d tb none\" >\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/BobMartin.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<figcaption>\r\n\t\t\tNC recipient of an Honorary Diploma in Environment and Horticulture Bob Martin (left) with NC President Sean Kennedy.\t\t<\/figcaption>\r\n\t\r\n\t<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\t\r\n \n\n\n<p>Two Dean's Award recipients were also recognized for their outstanding academic achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/06\/12\/deans-award-recipient-jessica-hachey-discovers-a-new-career-path-through-a-passion-for-nature\/\"><strong>Jessica Hachey<\/strong><\/a> of Lyndon (originally from Dundas) received the Dean's Award for the School of Environment and Horticulture after completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/environment\/program\/horticulture-technician\/\">Horticulture Technician<\/a> program with an outstanding 97.26 per cent average.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/06\/12\/grad-success-story-deans-award-recipient-julie-carmichael-office-administration-executive-program\/\"><strong>Julie Carmichael<\/strong><\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/office-administration-executive\/\">Office Administration - Executive<\/a> program was the recipient of the Dean's Award in the School of Business and Management. The St. Catharines resident (originally from North Bay) finished at the top of her program with a 97.01 per cent average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The afternoon ceremony celebrated over 400 graduates representing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/\">School of Hospitality and Tourism<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/\">School of Business and Management<\/a>, once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/ba-hons-human-resources\/\">Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources)<\/a> program graduate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/06\/12\/leading-by-example-mother-of-six-nashwa-higazy-earns-governor-generals-silver-academic-medal\/\"><strong>Nashwa Higazy<\/strong><\/a> received the prestigious Governor General's Silver Academic Medal for achieving a 94.93 GPA - the highest in a degree diploma. Higazy also received her graduate certificate in Project Management on June 12 and is an alumna from NC's Business Administration - Human Resources advanced diploma program (2024). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The St. Catharines resident, who is originally from Sudan, is a mother of six who balanced full-time studies with work and family responsibilities throughout her academic journey. She addressed the Class of 2026 via a recorded video message as she was unable to attend the ceremony having recently given birth to her sixth child.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t\t<div class=\"center-block\">\r\n\t\r\n\t<figure class=\"image aligncenter d tb none\" >\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/NashwaHigazy.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t<figcaption>\r\n\t\t\tGovernor General's Silver Academic Medal recipient Nashwa Higazy\t\t<\/figcaption>\r\n\t\r\n\t<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\r\n \n\n\n<p>A shining member of NC's 125,000-plus alumni community, <strong>Celeste Anderson <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/program\/tourism-management\/\">Tourism Management - Business Development (Co-op)<\/a>, 2020) returned to her alma mater to accept the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson, a Toronto resident (originally from Winnipeg, MB) is CEO and Co-Founder of Digital Sports Administration Inc., where she develops and manages esports tournaments, gaming activations, and live events across North America. She is known for being Canada’s first female professional gamer, winner of the reality television series <em>King of the Nerds<\/em> (2013) - which landed her an appearance on <em>Conan<\/em> - and has received industry accolades, including a TrailBlazeHER in Gaming nomination at the GameHER Awards and the Halo Community Commendations award for Best Event Organizer. She currently serves on the executive team of Women of Halo as Director of Business Operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accepting the Distinguished Alumni Award during the ceremony was especially meaningful for Anderson, who graduated virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. She addressed the Class of 2026, sharing words of wisdom.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"What I’ve learned since graduating is that success isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about working hard, staying passionate, maintaining a positive outlook, and continuing to move forward even when things feel uncertain,\" she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson enrolled at NC as a mature student at age 30 and graduated from her program with a 97.52 GPA, receiving the Dean's Award while overcoming a cancer diagnosis during her final semester.
