information for Spring Convocation, June 8 – 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College is preparing to welcome graduates and guests to the Welland Campus as Spring Convocation returns from June 8 – 13.<\/p>\n<p>More than 7,000 graduates will be celebrated during six days of ceremonies. Held twice daily at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., each ceremony will recognize graduates from different areas of study.<\/p>\n<p>All ceremonies will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person. The full ceremony schedule and livestream access are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/enrolmentservices\/convocation\/\">Niagara College Convocation website.<\/a> The website also serves as a central hub for important information related to schedules, graduation requirements, guest details, and ceremony updates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Support our graduates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NC employees are welcome and encouraged to attend Spring Convocation ceremonies, when possible, to support this year’s graduates. Reserved seating will be available for employees; please ask Enrolment Services staff for directions to the employee seating area upon arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Employees are also encouraged to share congratulatory messages on social media using the hashtag #NCGrad2026 and tagging @niagaracollege in their posts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welland Campus parking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please note that parking lots A and C at the Welland Campus will be reserved for graduates and their guests only during convocation week on Monday, June 8 (starting at 8 a.m.) to the end of day on Saturday, June 13. These lots are unavailable to employees and students during this time.<\/p>\n<p>All other lots are open and available during convocation week. Alternate entry points can be accessed via Woodlawn Road and Rice Road. The office at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake will be closed during this time.\u00a0The Welland Campus office (Secord 106) will remain open but will operate with limited service. Email Enrolment Services at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:registrar@niagaracollege.ca\">registrar@niagaracollege.ca<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Welland Campus Library and Learning Centre <\/strong>will remain open for regular hours during Convocation week with some minor service hour modifications. Please check the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nclibraries.niagaracollege.ca\/library\">Library and Learning Centres website<\/a>\u00a0for more details. Please note, the Learning Centre will have limited seating starting June 3 as NC prepares for Spring Convocation. There may also be potential noise and disruption in the Learning Commons and Library; quiet study areas will be limited.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Core and The Shack\u00a0(Welland Campus)<\/strong>: The Core will be closed from June 4 -13. The Shack will be closed during the week of Spring Convocation from June 8 – 13.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ancillary Services\/ Chartwells<\/strong>\u00a0will remain open with regular hours at the Welland Campus. class=\"wp-caption-text\">The NC community gathers to raise the Progress Pride Flag at the Welland campus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Pride flag serves as a powerful symbol of inclusion, visibility, and recognition, honouring and uplifting 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across NC and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>At the Welland Campus, Dr. Chris McGrath, Vice President, Students, opened the event with a land acknowledgment and welcomed attendees to the ceremony. He spoke about the significance of Pride Month and the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels seen, respected, and valued.<\/p>\n<p>“Today we not only celebrate the start of Pride month, but we also acknowledge June as Indigenous History Month,” said Dr. McGrath. “As I drove to campus this morning, I was reflecting on our relationship to the land, and it’s not lost on me that the movements for queer and Indigenous rights are so deeply connected. Since immemorial, Indigenous cultures around the world have celebrated and lifted up people in their communities who see the world through multiple perspectives — those who experience the world beyond the male\/female binary, and they contribute the best of both worlds to their community’s flourishing.”<\/p>\n<p>Dr. McGrath also shared his personal experiences with those gathered.<\/p>\n<p>“Growing up gay, I always knew there was something different about how I saw the world, and in turn, how I experienced it. I could never quite describe it or quantify it, but it always seemed that others around me knew what that something different was,” he shared. “That ‘something different’ informs how I see the world to this day–in my interactions with other queer people, radicalized people, people with disabilities, women, and folks from other marginalized groups, and helps me to better connect, collaborate, and understand. Happy Pride, everyone!”<\/p>\n<p>Additional remarks were shared by NCSAC Director of Media Peter Almounauar and Pride Niagara Board member Enzo De Divitis, who both emphasized the importance of allyship, community support, and continued advocacy for equal rights for all.<\/p>\n<p>At the Daniel J. their legacy of goodwill: Donors Carol Hudson and Tim Glutek proud to support Niagara College students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Carol Hudson and Tim Glutek, giving back isn’t just something they do, it’s the foundation of the life they share together.<\/p>\n<p>Married for nearly 30 years, the couple is building a legacy based on kindness, goodwill and a genuine desire to help others, including Niagara College students.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, they made a $5,000 donation to establish the Carol Hudson and Tim Glutek Award of Excellence, funding two $2,500 scholarships to help cover the cost of tuition for full-time female students enrolled in a program within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/\">Myhal School of Nursing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They recently increased their annual donation to $10,000 to provide a total of four scholarships starting this fall. Their goal: to empower women to pursue their dreams of making the world a better place.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting female students specifically is important to the couple, especially to Hudson who mentored many young women throughout her career in banking. She was one of the first women to work on the RBC trading floor in downtown Toronto in the 1980’s, an opportunity that she advocated for and one that made her a role model to her female colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Establishing a scholarship at NC is also inspired by the support Glutek received as a struggling student.<\/p>\n<p>“I still remember the scholarships and bursaries that I received over the years,” he said, thinking back on his time in university. “It relieved some of the stress… every little bit helps.”<\/p>\n<p>Glutek is grateful for the support that sustained him throughout his educational journey. He also made ends meet by picking up bottles and cans on campus to earn money, knowing that each collection could materialize into a loaf of bread or a jar of peanut butter, and did yard work on a property with pear trees, exchanging his time for fallen fruit.<\/p>\n<p>“You did what you needed to do,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>Glutek went on to work for the Securities Commission and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and has spent much of his life giving back to others.<\/p>\n<p>He’s been an avid blood donor for more than 40 years, donating over 250 times. His rare blood type has played a vital role in supporting pregnant women in need of transfusions during childbirth. He was also one of the first people to join the national bone marrow registry and has been called upon twice to donate, something Glutek and Hudson are very proud of.<\/p>\n<p>After living in Toronto, the couple retired to Niagara Falls to enjoy a slower pace of life. They travel, stay active and keep a full social calendar. Hudson has become a “social secretary” among a group of women, some well into their 90’s, who appreciate coffee time after their fitness classes and occasional lunch gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>NC is also part of their routine – they get their hair cut at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncteachinghairsalon.ca\/\">Teaching Hair Salon<\/a>, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncteachingspa.ca\/\">Teaching Spa<\/a> for treatments and have enjoyed lunch at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/culinaryarts\/benchmark\/\">Benchmark Restaurant<\/a>. Someone saw the potential. Someone is seeing women. Someone is seeing our silent struggles,” said Ogunlana.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Nigeria, Ogunlana came to Canada in 2023, eventually settling in Niagara to attend NC. The tuition scholarship provided a welcome financial boost during a low point in her life, allowing her to focus more time on her two young children and her mental health as she juggles school and family responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s been a while, but I still remember what it was like,” Glutek shared with Ogunlana. “The fact that we’re now in a position where we can help students like you, that means the world to us.”<\/p>\n<p>A Welland resident, Ogunlana already holds postsecondary credentials in mental health, adult education and communications.
