On April 27, NC’s Dr. Nadja Bressan, Associate Dean of the School of Trades, addressed federal government’s Standing Committee on Science and Research: Implications of the Canada-China Preliminary Joint Arrangement on Canada’s Electric Vehicle Sector<\/em>,\u00a0where she represented the College’s expertise in electric vehicle (EV) education.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bressan, who holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and has over twenty years of experience as a tenured professor and academic leader, was asked to present and provide input into the committee’s study as they examine the scientific, research, and industry implications on foreign electric vehicles. Dr. Bressan, alongside other industry experts, outlined their perspectives on the Canada-China Preliminary Joint Arrangement and its implications for Canada’s EV sector, followed by questions from lawmakers.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bressan spoke to broader workforce issues in the green automotive sector, including their effects on recruiting, retaining and developing talent considering the decision to import EV’s.<\/p>\n

“It’s not every day that you get called to the speak before a parliamentary committee, and I was honoured to represent Niagara College,” said Dr. Bressan.<\/p>\n

She emphasized the importance of EV safety, noting NC’s efforts to train first responders<\/a> on the high voltage technology in the College’s Green Automotive Technology lab. Dr. Bressan asserted that all new EV’s in Canada should be designed with transparency to ensure public safety and ease of maintenance.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bressan also contextualized the impact of the foreign trade agreement considering the federal cap on international student study permits and post-graduate work permits. These factors have reduced the pool of skilled workers in Canada’s automotive sector, an area in which the College has been a leading institution in training talent.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bressan linked stable, well-paying employment in Canada’s automotive industry to easing cost-of-living pressures, while also noting the lead that Niagara College is taking to expand innovative programs to train the future workforce and to respond to industry needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

students.<\/p>\n<p>Ali Ryder, Outreach and Education Advisor with the Student Recruitment team, moderated the session, welcoming panelists Laura Dodman (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/human-resources-management\/\">Human Resources Management<\/a>, 2010), Lai Hock Flores (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/programs\/palliative-care\/\">Palliative Care<\/a>, 2023; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/programs\/community-mental-health\/\">Community Mental Health<\/a>, 2024), Robert Francis Bernardo (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/motive-power-automotive\/\">Motive Power Technician – Automotive Co-op<\/a>, 2024), and Javier Carranza (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/business\/\">Business<\/a>, 2024).<\/p>\n<p>Launched at the start of the winter 2026 term, the series connected students with guest speakers who offered real-world perspectives on leadership, resilience, and professional growth. The alumni urged students that setting goals and planning for the future is just as important as adapting when things change along the way.<\/p>\n<p>“Give yourself grace,” said Dodman. “It’s okay to move to plan B …you will be thankful for the road it took to get to your next or final destination.”<\/p>\n<p>Carranza, a Marketing Coordinator with SWS Warning Lights Inc. in Niagara Falls also encouraged students to “prepare to adapt” and to believe in their talents.<\/p>\n<p>“Be mindful about your adaptation process into the real world,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>“Also be realistic about your potential and let your work speak for itself. School Board and the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN), the Grade 11 and 12 students took part in NC’s fourth annual Young Women in Trades event which is designed to introduce young women to the wide range of opportunities available in the skilled trades sector.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/\">School of Trades<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/studentrecruitment\/\">Recruitment<\/a> team, the event aimed to broaden career horizons, challenge long-standing gender stereotypes, and help students build confidence through practical experience. In the Electrical Techniques lab, participants worked with custom-built control station trainer boards, learning to identify malfunctioning smoke detectors. The machining workshop introduced students to CNC machining centres, where they observed precision manufacturing processes, while the construction session focused on foundational skills essential for this in-demand field.<\/p>\n<p>“The Young Women in Trades event is another outstanding partnership between our school board and Niagara College and it’s one we know our students look forward to every year,” said Camillo Cipriano, Niagara Catholic Director of Education. “This female-focused environment allows young women in our schools interested in working in the trades to learn more about the opportunities available to them as career pathways in a supportive space.”<\/p>\n<p>Cipriano added that continued collaboration between secondary and post-secondary partners is key to student success.<\/p>\n<p>“We are grateful that Niagara College continues to nurture our relationship by providing our secondary students with a hands-on understanding of post-secondary opportunities in the skilled trades, technology, and other programs,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>By connecting students with faculty and showcasing real-world applications of skilled trades, the event underscores the importance of fostering inclusion and empowering the next generation of skilled workers.<\/p>\n<div data-carousel-extra='{\"blog_id\":53,\"permalink\":\"https:\\\/\\\/www.niagaracollege.ca\\\/insidenc\\\/2026\\\/04\\\/29\\\/young-women-in-trades-event-helps-students-build-futures-in-skilled-trades\\\/\"}' class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular\" data-original-width=\"660\"><div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 655px; part in the Rankin Cancer Run.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the NC Knights on the Run team will take part in the annual, family-friendly event, which raises critical funds to support cancer care across the Niagara region.<\/p>\n<p>Participants can choose between a 1 km or 5 km walk\/run, making it an accessible and inclusive opportunity for all fitness levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Event details:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Date:<\/strong> Saturday, May 23<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Brock University, St. Catharines<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start time:<\/strong> 10 a.m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Registration:<\/strong> $20 per adult; $10 per student (includes event T-shirt)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Registration is required to participate. Those unable to attend can still show their support by donating to the NC Knights on the Run team to help reach its $2,000 fundraising goal, or by spreading the word across their networks.<\/p>\n<p>To register and join the NC Knights on the Run, click <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.rankincancerrun.com\/register-participant\/register-self\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meet the NC Knights on the Run co-captains Jana Boniferro and Ali Ryder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a shared passion for community and giving back, co-captains Jana Boniferro, Director, Alumni Relations, and Ali Ryder, Outreach and Education Advisor, are leading the team with plenty of enthusiasm and energy.<\/p>\n<p>Both bring personal connections to the cause and a strong belief in the impact the Rankin Run has across the Niagara region.<\/p>\n<p>“Sadly, I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t have someone in their lives affected by cancer and I have personally participated in the run a number of times, each time in honour of someone else,” said Boniferro. “It feels good to co-lead this initiative for our colleagues at NC that want to contribute to this worthy cause because of their own unique purpose.”<\/p>\n<p>“As a lifetime resident of Niagara, the Rankin Cancer Run means a great deal to me because all the money raised stays in Niagara,” added Ryder. “We are unfortunately all touched by cancer and losing several friends and my own father to cancer, the money raised at this event is critical in offering excellent care close to home.”<\/p>\n<p>As a runner herself and someone who has used running as an outlet for many years, Boniferro says her connection to the event has evolved over time.<\/p>\n<p>“I now consider it a privilege to move my body,” she said. “Every time a run gets hard, I remember what an honour and privilege it is to be able to move my body not just for myself, but for those who are unable to and those that are no longer with us. Movement is such a gift.”<\/p>\n<p>Both co-captains emphasized the importance of NC’s involvement in supporting the local community through this fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p>“Supporting the Rankin Run means supporting Niagara,” said Boniferro. “Every dollar raised helps people in our own community who need it most.”<\/p>\n<p>Ryder believes the initiative is also an opportunity to build on the College’s strong culture of giving back.<\/p>\n<p>“Many of the volunteers who join me each year for the Rankin Run are from NC, including staff, students and their families,” she said. “So, let’s see how many more members of our community we can get out to take a walk or run together and raise funds for a good cause.”<\/p>\n<p>Beyond fundraising, the pair hope the initiative strengthens connections across the College.<\/p>\n<p>“We hope our participation reflects the kind of community we strive to be, one that shows up, cares deeply and stands together,” said Boniferro. “To every student, employee and alumni participating, we want you to feel it: your college has your back. We’re beside you every step of the way, literally!”<\/p>\n<p>Anyone can participate in the walk or run, regardless of their experience. For those on the fence about joining, Ryder offers simple reassurance:<\/p>\n<p>“I don’t run at all, and I’m doing it!” said Ryder. “It’s all for a great cause. Administrative Council (NCSAC) Educator of the Year awards, celebrating their dedication, teaching excellence and impact on student learning.<\/p>\n<p>The annual awards honour one full-time and one part-time educator based on student nominations, highlighting instructors who have meaningfully shaped students’ academic experiences and contributed to the #ncLIFE community.<\/p>\n<p>This year’s recipients are part-time educator Kevin McGuinness from the School of Academic and Liberal Studies (Early Childhood Education) and full-time educator Gianluca Agostinelli from the School of Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin McGuinness was recognized by students for his highly engaging and creative approach to teaching, which brings subject matter to life in memorable ways. Students described his classes as vivid and interactive, noting that he often goes beyond standard instruction to deepen understanding through hands-on and immersive learning experiences. His use of creative demonstrations and participatory activities helps students connect with complex concepts while generating curiosity and confidence in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Students also highlighted McGuinness’ ability to thoughtfully communicate ideas and create a learning environment where participation and exploration are encouraged, making course content both accessible and engaging.<\/p>\n<p>Gianluca Agostinelli was recognized for fostering a supportive and welcoming classroom environment that encourages student engagement and reflection. Students noted his ability to connect course material to current issues in the nursing field, helping learners better understand their future professional responsibilities and perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>He was also praised for providing detailed and constructive feedback on assignments, which helped students improve their academic writing and critical thinking skills. His approach was described as both encouraging and insightful, supporting students’ growth as they prepare for careers in nursing.<\/p>\n<p>The Educator of the Year awards have been presented annually by NCSAC since 2003, celebrating educators who go above and beyond in supporting student success. announces returning President and Board of Directors for 2026-2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) has announced its new Board of Directors, along with its returning President and student representative to the Niagara College Board of Governors for the 2026-2027 academic year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NCSAC President<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hish Clifford, a graduate from the Business Administration – Accounting program (2025), will return as NCSAC President for the 2026-2027 term. The 2026-2027 Board of Directors was elected in March and ratified at the NCSAC Annual General Meeting held on April 7.<\/p>\n<p>Clifford brings continued leadership experience and a strong commitment to student advocacy into the upcoming year. Over the past year, he has focused on enhancing the student experience through expanded scholarships and supports, improved campus accessibility, mental health resources, and sustainability initiatives, while also working to reduce barriers to student success.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond campus, Clifford has advocated at multiple levels of government on post-secondary affordability, with a focus on OSAP and student financial assistance programs, while reinforcing the importance of reducing financial barriers to education. A friendly greeting, a willingness to help, or simply being approachable can go a long way in creating a positive and inclusive on-campus environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NC employees: Help create a warm welcome for students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Orientation Day (Friday, May 8)<\/strong> marks the beginning of the NC experience for new students, while the <strong>first day of classes (Monday, May 11)<\/strong> welcomes returning students back to campus.<\/p>\n<p>We encourage employees to support students where they can. Keeping an eye out for those who may need directions, offering assistance when possible, or helping answer questions all contribute to a welcoming campus atmosphere and help students feel at ease as they navigate new spaces, routines, and experiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Helpful tools and resources to guide your support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make it easier to guide students and enhance their on-campus experience by exploring and promoting the following resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Orientation Website:<\/strong>\u00a0Learn about transition programming, program information sessions, and activities to better assist students with questions or concerns via the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/engagement\/orientation\/\">Orientation website<\/a>. Our programming extends beyond May 8 and includes a series of activities and events over the first six weeks of the semester that help students to get connected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>LauNCh guide:<\/strong>\u00a0This helpful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/launchguide\/\">online resource<\/a>\u00a0provides students with resources about the ‘how to’ of #ncLIFE. Many employees will also find it helpful! It includes information about things that a lot of students worry about on their first day, such as getting their Student ID, accessing wifi and email, and finding their timetables. It provides instructions on how to access BrightSpace, in addition to a wealth of academic and personal support resources.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NC Engage App:<\/strong>\u00a0Get familiar with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncengage.ca\/home_login\">NC Engage App<\/a>\u00a0to help students discover campus activities, events, and opportunities to connect with others.
