Interview on NC’s Aging in Place research study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CKTB’s Steph Vivier highlighted NC’s Aging in Place research study after experiencing one of the College’s aging simulation suits firsthand. history to virtual reality: NC powers Willowbank’s new 3D experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A historic Queenston estate has had a 3D makeover, thanks to faculty and students from NC’s School of Media Studies.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, September 19, Willowbank School of Restoration Arts will unveil a custom virtual reality recreation – designed and built by NC Game Development students – at its twentieth anniversary open house event.<\/p>\n<p>The project has been about a year in the making. NC School of Media faculty Conor MacNeil – who is also a member of Willowbank’s Board of Directors. – led student volunteers from the College’s Game Development programs in the project. They worked with Willowbank students to reimagine the historic estate on a digital platform. Drawing on photographs, floor plans, archival research and conversations with community members, they created an experience that offers an immersive glimpse into Willowbank’s past.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s the future meeting the past. Heritage students\u00a0 and gaming students work in very different spaces, but this project shows the incredible applications virtual reality has for cultural preservation,” aid MacNeil. “When people put the headset on, they aren’t just looking at a 3D model, they’re stepping into an authentic, photorealistic environment that honours Willowbank’s history while showcasing our students’ technical skills at an industry level.”<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, third-year Game Development student Ronnie Warwick worked alongside MacNeil and about a dozen students across NC’s Game Development programs, to transform the historic mansion into an interactive digital environment. Warwick, who was born and raised in St. Catharines, was interested in getting involved with the project to gain hands-experience.<\/p>\n<p>“I was really excited to get some industry experience – to get a sense of what it’s like to work on a game, with a team, with a client, and get a chance to show off my skills,” said Warwick.<\/p>\n<p>Using Unreal Engine – industry-leading software that expands beyond the standard classroom curriculum – the team used 3D spatial scanning, drone capture, high-to-low poly baking, and archival research from the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Warwick handled much of the initial reference work and developed the 3D model from the original floor plans before moving to programming the VR mechanics, headset setup, and audio integration in Unreal.<\/p>\n<p>He \u00a0valued the experience he gained contributing to the architecture of the project, from details such as trims and doors to the entire staircase design which took significant effort.<\/p>\n<p>“Conor made this feel like an industry production. We had a client, we had a goal, we had milestones to achieve, we had roles and responsibilities,” said Warwick. “Working on real-world goals with real-world clients gave me a sense of accomplishment and a drive to work and prove what our team could do.”<\/p>\n<p>With the recent loss of other historic estates such as the Glencairn House, Warwick reflected on the importance of preserving history in 3D and how he could use his skills to do just that.<\/p>\n<p>“One of the coolest things about this project is we’re preserving history in 3D,” he said. “The idea of preserving Willowbank and many other historic houses in 3De has led to a lot of new ideas and plans for the future… our 200-year old pieces of history need to be preserved and our team is working to preserve them.”<\/p>\n<p>In addition to walking through intricately detailed rooms, users can discover virtual period artifacts and view digitized letters dating back to the 1860s that were once hidden within the walls of the estate.<\/p>\n<p>The long-term vision for the project is a digital ‘time machine’ for users to toggle between the estate’s distinct architectural eras, from the Hamilton family in the mid-1800s, to the Bright family in expansions of the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>The open house showcase marks the public debut of phase one, bringing the estate to life in immersive 3D.<\/p>\n<p>The VR experience will be a key feature of Willowbank’s 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary open house on Saturday, September 20. MacNeil, Warwick and other NC student creators will be on site to guide visitors through the headset walkthrough. the demo will be running throughout the afternoon of the open house inside the with a cause: Fundraiser taps into support for Brewmaster students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nostalgia meets the next generation of craft brewing on Saturday, September 16 as collectors gather for the eleventh annual Niagara Brewery Collectibles Club (NBCC) Fall Trade Show in support of NC students.<\/p>\n<p>To be held at Casa Dante Hall in Welland from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the show invites the community to explore a treasure trove of beer memorabilia. Attendees can buy sell and trade, connect with members, and learn more about the club. The event will feature grand prizes, a penny sale, 50-50 draw, a neon sign raffle and more. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Net proceeds from the event will support scholarships for students in NC’s Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program via the Niagara Brewery Collectibles Club Bursary. A $500 bursary is awarded to a student in the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program each semester who is in financial need and is a resident of the Niagara region or the Greater Toronto Area.<\/p>\n<p>NBCC Club Founder Larry Lemelin said the show is a highly anticipated event for the club members to engage with the community and support NC students. Through the event, he also hopes to spread the word about the club, which is always seeking new members.<\/p>\n<p>“The students at NC are the future beer of the beer industry. By supporting them as our Club does, we are helping them know that they have made a great choice for their future career opportunities,” said Lemelin.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2017, the NBCC has donated $13,000 to NC for students awards.<\/p>\n<p>“The Niagara Brewery Collectibles Club has been a wonderful and steadfast partner to Niagara College for many years,” said O’Connor. “Their enthusiasm for the College, commitment to our students and continued support through their bursary demonstrate the meaningful impact that community organizations can have on student success. Larry and the NBCC have consistently found ways to give back to our students and our community, and we are incredibly grateful for their longstanding generosity and support.”<\/p>\n<p>The bond between the club and the college runs deep: Brewmaster Professor Jon Downing – who helped launch Ontario’s first brew pub, the Atlas Hotel in Welland and has opened more than 100 breweries around the world – is a member of the NBCC and has welcomed club tours at the Teaching Brewery.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 2015, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bccniagara.com\/\">NBCC<\/a>\u00a0is the largest brewery collectibles club in Canada with more than 180 active members. The Club offers collectors from across the globe an opportunity to meet, buy, sell and trade. shoes of older adults.<\/p>\n<p>As more Canadians explore aging in place and multigenerational living, members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nhba.ca\/\">Niagara Home Builders Association<\/a> (NHBA) wore aging simulation suits as part of the NC study to explore how an experiential approach can inform future housing design and renovation practices.<\/p>\n<p>“We saw an opportunity to leverage Niagara College’s expertise in health simulation, which we use to prepare our students for real-world experiences, together with our longstanding partnership with local builders through the NHBA, to explore an important question: how can we better design homes for aging in place?” said Sin\u00e9ad McElhone, Dean of Health Sciences at NC. “By putting builders in the shoes of those who will navigate these spaces, we can generate insights that benefit our students, our community and the industry.”<\/p>\n<p>An aging simulation suit is a wearable, experiential training tool designed for younger people to physically experience the sensory and mobility challenges of older adults and how these conditions can make everyday tasks more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>The suit – with weighted cuffs and limbs, resistance straps and neck brace – can be customized to mimic muscle weakness, dexterity, and stiffness to simulate conditions like arthritis and sarcopenia. Impaired vision goggles simulate degenerative eye conditions, and headphones can reproduce the effects of hearing loss.<\/p>\n<p>Chuck McShane, CEO of the NHBA, and Ed Lucchetta, owner of Lucchetta Homes, were among the local builders who participated in the pilot. The study took place in a multi-level home in Welland’s active-adult community at Hunter’s Pointe, a subdivision built by Lucchetta Homes.<\/p>\n<p>“Creating homes that allow people to age safely, comfortably, and independently is an important part of building the communities of the future,” said McShane. “Through our partnership with Niagara College, we have an opportunity to explore practical solutions that can be incorporated into both existing homes and new construction.”<\/p>\n<p>NC facilitators customized the aging suit for McShane to simulate the experience of someone who had suffered a left-sided stroke accompanied by vision loss. McShane then completed activities of daily living, including getting out of bed, navigating stairs, picking items up from the floor, and taking medication. The technology is an experiential learning tool for students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/healthsciences\/\">Health Sciences<\/a> division, including those in Nursing, Personal Support Worker, and Massage Therapy programs. Students in the Schools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/communityservices\/\">Community Services<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/justiceandfitness\/\">Justice and Fitness<\/a> also experience the wearables.<\/p>\n<p>“These simulations help students step into their future patients’ experiences, building empathy, understanding, and appreciation for the person behind the patient,” said Cousineau.<\/p>\n<p>Following the experience, participants debriefed with facilitators to help inform abstracts and a research paper on the study. The findings will be shared at the Ontario Homebuilders Conference with NHBA members and at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/05\/08\/innovative-health-research-takes-centre-stage-at-niagara-college\/\">Niagara Health Knowledge Institute Research Day<\/a>, an annual health research conference hosted by Niagara Health at NC.<\/p>\n<p>Cousineau said caring for an aging parent and adapting a home to meet their changing needs can be an eye-opening experience.<\/p>\n<p>“Experiences like that really underscore the need for partnerships with builders to consider accessibility and aging in place from the beginning, creating homes that can better support people as their needs change,” said Cousineau.<\/p>\n<p>Lucchetta said designing for aging in place means creating homes that can adapt as the needs of homeowner’s change.<\/p>\n<p>“Features like wider doorways, accessible layouts, main-floor living and adaptable bathrooms can be incorporated seamlessly into a home without compromising its style or functionality,” said Lucchetta.<\/p>\n<p>The Aging in Place pilot was a joint venture with NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/\">School of Trades<\/a> who helped shape study, drawing on its expertise and relationship with the NHBA to bring the partners together. The pilot marks the NHBA’s first collaboration with the College’s Health Sciences programs.<\/p>\n<p>“This aging suit actually didn’t start in healthcare,” added Pennings. “It started in the trades in the automotive industry to better improve the safety of vehicles.
