The activities brought together partners from\u00a0Bigwa\u00a0and\u00a0Munguri\u00a0Folk Development Colleges (FDCs), as well as Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) Justice in Society for Transformative Change (JUST) and Young Strong Mothers Foundation (YSMF).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building entrepreneurship and service skills<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building on\u00a0four years\u00a0of collaboration through ESP-05, the opening week of activities in Dodoma featured a five-day workshop series\u00a0in\u00a0entrepreneurship, business planning, and service excellence. The workshops were designed to help\u00a0participating\u00a0institutions expand community services, develop\u00a0sustainable\u00a0revenue-generating\u00a0opportunities, and\u00a0increase their long-term impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Facilitated by Orel Ruiz, Director, Partnerships,\u00a0the workshop series\u00a0guided\u00a0participants\u00a0through the\u00a0development\u00a0of\u00a0institutional\u00a0business\u00a0plans,\u00a0applying\u00a0entrepreneurship\u00a0and\u00a0service\u00a0excellence\u00a0concepts\u00a0within\u00a0the Tanzanian context\u00a0while\u00a0drawing on local strengths,\u00a0available resources, and the needs of their institutions.\u00a0The workshops\u00a0also\u00a0created opportunities for mutual learning, allowing\u00a0Niagara College\u00a0and its partners to exchange perspectives\u00a0and\u00a0broaden their understanding of the diverse approaches that shape global skills development.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first three days, based on modules\u00a0developed by NC\u00a0Professor Lisa Ferrantelli,\u00a0focused on\u00a0entrepreneurship and\u00a0business\u00a0development.\u00a0Participants\u00a0developed institutional business plans\u00a0while exploring\u00a0practical approaches to costing, pricing, marketing, and financial sustainability.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1661561\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1661561\" class=\" wp-image-1661561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/08\/Picture-2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"265\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1661561\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orel Ruiz, Director, Partnerships, facilitating a workshop series in Dodoma.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The second part of the week,\u00a0featuring\u00a0six modules developed by\u00a0NC\u00a0Professor\u00a0Agnes Nowaczek,\u00a0focused on service excellence\u00a0by\u00a0equipping participants\u00a0with practical approaches\u00a0to improving customer experiences,\u00a0enhancing\u00a0communication, and\u00a0fostering\u00a0professionalism and continuous\u00a0improvement\u00a0across institutional\u00a0services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;One of the most rewarding aspects of the workshop was seeing participants move beyond ideas and develop practical plans they can implement within their own institutions,&#8221;\u00a0said Ruiz.\u00a0&#8220;By the end of the week, every team had developed an institutional business plan grounded in their local context and focused on creating sustainable services that respond to community needs. That sense of local ownership is what creates lasting impact and will help ensure these ideas continue to\u00a0evolve\u00a0well beyond\u00a0the\u00a0life\u00a0of the project.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strengthening culinary education<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The second week of the ESP-05 activities took place at\u00a0Bigwa\u00a0FDC in Morogoro, where Esteban Navarro, Global Education Projects\u00a0Project Manager, and\u00a0Chef Erik Mauke,\u00a0NC Culinary Subject Matter Expert,\u00a0supported the delivery of short courses in Vegetarian &amp; Vegan Food and Baking Essentials.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Throughout the week, participants\u00a0engaged\u00a0in workshops focused on\u00a0quality\u00a0ingredients,\u00a0kitchen\u00a0management, and\u00a0train-the-trainer\u00a0methodologies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0institutional business planning work completed\u00a0during the first week, the\u00a0culinary training\u00a0shifted\u00a0from planning\u00a0to\u00a0implementation\u00a0by providing\u00a0Bigwa\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FDC with\u00a0practical\u00a0tools to enhance the services it offers to the community.\u00a0In addition to\u00a0enhancing\u00a0its\u00a0ability\u00a0to\u00a0deliver\u00a0high-quality\u00a0short courses, the\u00a0workshops explored\u00a0practical\u00a0ways to develop a sustainable model where products created through the culinary programs can\u00a0be sold within the community, generating revenue to support the continuation\u00a0and future growth\u00a0of these offerings beyond the ESP-05\u00a0project.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1661562\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1661562\" class=\" wp-image-1661562\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/08\/Picture-3.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"236\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1661562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Esteban Navarro, Global Education Projects Project Manager, and Chef Erik Mauke supported Bigwa FDC during its first-ever Open House event.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bigwa\u00a0FDC celebrates its first Open House<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On July 25, Navarro and Chef Mauke supported\u00a0Bigwa\u00a0FDC during its first-ever Open House event, bringing together community members, parents, and\u00a0other\u00a0local stakeholders to learn more about the college&#8217;s programs, services, and newly developed short courses.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;More than a community celebration, this Open House demonstrated the impact of four years of collaboration through ESP-05,&#8221; said Navarro.\u00a0&#8220;It provided\u00a0Bigwa\u00a0FDC with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the project while strengthening community engagement and recruiting future students.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">About the Empowering Through Skills Program (ESP-05)<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), ESP-05 is implemented by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan). College&#8217;s RESET (Reflect, Engage, Support, Empower, and Thrive) Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference by facilitating an interactive session for students. <strong>Session proposals must be submitted by Friday, Aug. 28.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the Daniel J. message from President Kennedy: Mid-summer updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we reach the mid-point of summer, and with our Fall term just weeks away, I am writing to provide updates on important work that has been taking place throughout the Spring term.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/04\/23\/message-from-president-kennedy-2026-2027-business-plan-and-budget\/\">my last message<\/a> regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/about\/administration\/plans-reports\/business-plan\/\">2026-2027 Business Plan and Budget<\/a>, I indicated that aligning our workforce with enrolments is a key strategy in our efforts to adapt to significant shifts in the postsecondary landscape.\u00a0Layoff processes have now concluded and 22 employees have been laid off from the administrative, full-time and part-time support staff, and faculty groups. While this number is lower than the layoffs seen at other colleges &#8211; due in large part to steps we took to mitigate the impact on individual employees &#8211; I know that this is a very difficult time for employees who are leaving NC, and for teams who are losing valued colleagues. As we move forward, I want to acknowledge the dedication and contributions of the employees who are leaving us.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside these changes, we remain focused on the priorities that will position NC for long-term success, including revenue growth.<\/p>\n<p>In early July, NC completed its submission for the provincial government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1007509\/ontario-investing-17-billion-to-prepare-more-students-for-in-demand-careers\">Priority Growth Fund<\/a> &#8211; a key part of the province&#8217;s new funding model announced in early 2026. The Priority Growth Fund provides $1.7 billion across the college and university sectors and is designed to create additional seats in high-demand sectors such as health care, skilled trades, STEM and education. NC&#8217;s proposal for the Priority Growth Fund highlights our areas of strength, our track record of excellence in applied and work-integrated learning, our strong connection to community and the labour needs in Niagara, and our key role in powering economic growth in Niagara. The Priority Growth Fund is a competitive process, and we expect funding to be awarded in September.<\/p>\n<p>As Vice-President, Partnerships and Enterprises Sean Coote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/07\/21\/message-from-vice-president-sean-coote-partnerships-and-enterprises-update\/\">recently shared<\/a>, we have reached an agreement to extend our work in Saudi Arabia, where for years we have provided Saudi learners with the career-focused education and training that they need to succeed in the country&#8217;s evolving economy. Once finalized, this extended agreement will generate new annual revenue to support programs and services at our Niagara-based campuses.<\/p>\n<p>While neither the Priority Growth funding nor the extended agreement in Saudi Arabia alone will bridge the revenue gap created by dramatic decreases in international enrolments, when combined with new academic programs, continued enrolment growth and new entrepreneurial revenue streams, they contribute to significant momentum that will propel us toward a new period of recovery and growth.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the summer I have also made progress toward my goal of meeting with all members of Team NC, through divisional, departmental and school meetings, and I will continue meeting with employees throughout the Fall term.
