On May 13 and 14, the College’s Applied Health Institute foyer was transformed into a hub of inspiration and pride celebrating the “power of nurses to transform health” – the theme for this year’s National Nursing Week (May 11-17).<\/p>\n

Organized by Jackie Crawford and Jaymie Tyrer, Clinical Supervisors within NC’s Myhal School of Nursing, the two-day event featured interactive activities and displays that engaged the college community and honoured the impact that nurses have on patients’ lives.<\/p>\n

Empowerment cornhole with bedpan targets offered participants a chance to discuss resilience strategies and what nurses need to feel empowered before taking a shot at winning prizes, nursing memorabilia and photos honoured the past, and a collaborative banner titled, “Nurses impact lives by …” invited the NC community to complete the powerful statement.<\/p>\n

There are plans for the three-by-six-foot banner to be displayed within the Myhal School of Nursing as a visual testament to the profession’s influence.<\/p>\n

During the week, healthcare partners visited the College to tour the innovative labs where future nurses are learning the skills required to become compassionate and resilient healthcare providers.<\/p>\n

On May 13, nursing leaders from Niagara Region Public Health, including Diane Vanecko, Chief Nursing Officer, and Bev Richter, Nursing Practice Specialist, were welcomed to campus by NC Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Sin\u00e9ad McElhone and the Myhal School of Nursing’s Associate Dean Courtney Evers and Associate Director, International Nursing Graduate Studies and Clinical Education, Sarah McGeown. Public Health partners with the College to provide valuable placements for nursing students.<\/p>\n

During their tour, Vanecko and Richter engaged with nursing faculty, staff and students and received a glimpse at the construction of the future Health Education Building, currently underway at the Welland Campus. Once open in 2027, the expansion will create spaces for an additional 800 students studying in NC’s in-demand healthcare program areas, including nursing.<\/p>\n

National Nursing Week also provided an opportunity for the College to highlight the innovative nursing research led by professor Dr. Holldrid Odreman and his ONSET group of student researchers. Recent research includes a pilot study that explored how escape room design elements compare to traditional classroom learning<\/a>, bringing together nursing (BScN and PN), PSW and paramedic students in scenarios aimed at strengthening teamwork competencies that are critical in patient care settings.<\/p>\n

The team submitted an e-poster presentation on the study to the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) website for National Nursing Week and presented a poster at Niagara Health Knowledge Institute’s sixth annual Research Day on May 7.<\/p>\n

serving others, as a firefighter, soldier, chaplain, mentor, volunteer and mental health advocate.<\/p>\n<p>A graduate of NC’s General Arts and Science program in 1995, Bennett has built a career defined by public service, resilience and a commitment to helping others. Bennett was selected as one of only ten recipients across Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his firefighting and military career, Bennett was repeatedly exposed to traumatic emergencies, fatal accidents and loss, experiences that eventually led to a diagnosis of complex PTSD.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than retreat from that struggle, Bennett transformed it into purpose, dedicating his life to supporting people through adversity and strengthening suffering communities around him.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving provincial recognition became an especially monumental moment because of his journey.<\/p>\n<p>“I felt very humbled and honoured,” Bennett said. “PTSD makes you catastrophize everything. You feel like you constantly prove yourself. Being among the Queen Elizabeth II Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship recipients was proof that I did something worthwhile.”<\/p>\n<p>Held at Queen’s Park at the Lieutenant Governor’s residence, the ceremony brought together community leaders and changemakers from across the province, a moment Bennett still describes as surreal and humbling.<\/p>\n<p>“I know I earned my way there, but just to be included, and accepted for who I am, felt very special,” he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A life built around service<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Bennett’s dedication to service began in 1985 when he joined the Lincoln and Welland Regiment as a reservist with the Canadian Armed Forces. He was nominated for the Medal of Bravery in 2006 and later received both provincial and federal exemplary service medals recognizing decades of distinguished service.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Turning trauma into advocacy: The Valhalla Project Niagara<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1611530 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"639\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122.webp 850w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122-300x150.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122-768x384.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122-800x400.webp 800w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122-640x320.webp 640w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122-400x200.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/05\/20210914_152122-180x90.webp 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After decades on the front lines of emergency response, the emotional impact of Bennett’s work began to take a toll, and he was ultimately diagnosed with complex PTSD.<\/p>\n<p>At a time when PTSD was still stigmatized within emergency services, Bennett became one of the first firefighters in the region to openly take leave due to operational trauma.<\/p>\n<p>“One thing people don’t realize is you don’t forget those tragic calls,” he said. “You carry them with you forever.”<\/p>\n<p>This experience pushed him toward a new mission of helping others feel less alone in their own similar struggles.<\/p>\n<p>“I don’t want people to go through all those years of not understanding what was wrong with them,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Bennett co-founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/valhallaprojectniagara.org\/\">Valhalla Project Niagara<\/a> alongside military veteran and retired Peel police officer Graham Bettes. The Niagara-based charity provides free residential programming for veterans, first responders and others living with operational stress trauma and injuries. The program focuses heavily on peer support, connection and community, bringing together participants from across Canada and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Many participants in the program arrive carrying intense shame, isolation and emotional exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>“Once they realize they’re in a room with people from all these different walks of life that all have the exact same symptoms, exact same experiences, they realize there’s no shame in what they’re going through,” he said.<\/p>\n<p>A major part of the program’s impact comes from vulnerability and peer connection, with participants seeing others, including Bennett, openly discuss their own struggles with PTSD and operational trauma.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1611531\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img trauma.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>“I’m a big guy, tattooed, goatee, and I have tears coming down my face when I talk about certain things,” Bennett said. “I try to show them that when you lose the shame, you can start healing.”<\/p>\n<p>A central part of Bennett’s philosophy is the Latin phrase <em>Nunquam Unis<\/em>, meaning “never alone,” a phrase tattooed on his body that has become deeply connected to the organization’s peer-support model.<\/p>\n<p>“None of us with PTSD are ever truly alone,” he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Service dogs and literacy programming<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the earliest initiatives launched through the Valhalla Project Niagara involved providing professionally trained service dogs to veterans and first responders living with PTSD.<\/p>\n<p>Working alongside his wife, Melodi, a master dog trainer, Bennett helped purchase and train seven service dogs for participants at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>The dogs play an important role in helping participants manage anxiety and emotional regulation, while Bennett’s own service dog, Siren, remains an important part of his daily life.<\/p>\n<p>Together, Bennett and his wife also operated a nine-year literacy program using service dogs to help children and new Canadians improve reading skills in schools across Niagara.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Supporting troops overseas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Over the years, Bennett has co-led numerous community and military support initiatives focused on improving morale, connection and support for Canadian Armed Forces members serving overseas.<\/p>\n<p>He helped establish a “Support the Troops” initiative that delivered more than 200 care packages across seven deployments while also coordinating the delivery of school supplies to a girls’ school in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The program continues today through annual holiday outreach efforts, including sending more than 300 Christmas cards to deployed troops each year.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Community advocacy and volunteer work<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Bennett’s commitment to community care has also extended into local outreach, family support and mental health advocacy throughout Niagara.<\/p>\n<div id=\"caption-attachment-1611532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bennett helped bring the City of St. Catharines’ first-ever public labyrinth to Fairview Park. The labyrinth, sometimes referred to as a healing garden, is a walking path designed for meditation, mindfulness and personal reflection, helping reduce stress, encourage gentle exercise and support individuals living with mental health conditions and PTSD.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He and his wife helped provide winter clothing, boots and other essentials for newcomer families and students, ensuring every child at Lincoln Centennial School in St. Catharines received a toque, mittens and scarf, while also launching a boot program for children in need.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett has volunteered with organizations including the Kidney Foundation, Brain Injury Community Re-entry, Sport by Ability Niagara, the Humane Society, the Royal Canadian Legion and Walk for Guide Dogs.<\/p>\n<p>He also spent three years lobbying to establish a public labyrinth at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagarathisweek.com\/life\/pulling-the-sadness-away-st-catharines-labyrinth-a-coping-tool-for-first-responders\/article_757f5176-b0bf-57bd-b19b-d160d425adfc.html\">Fairview Park in St. Catharines<\/a> to support mental health and wellness for residents.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his advocacy work, Bennett has delivered educational talks to service clubs, first responder organizations, detention centres and community groups, helping reduce stigma surrounding PTSD, suicide and operational stress injuries.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Continuing his mission<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now an ordained Fire Chaplain and chaplain trainer in Ontario, Bennett supports veterans, first responders and families through grief, trauma and crisis. His work includes suicide intervention, grief counselling, supporting families of deployed troops, officiating funerals and weddings, and mentoring fellow chaplains.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the provincial recognition and decades of accomplishments behind him, Bennett says his work is far from finished. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Thao, in her teens, must leave the country with her uncle. Her sister Sao Ma\u00ef, only a little older, remains with their parents, hoping they will soon be reunited. But their separation will last nearly 20 years, and the letters they exchange are their only way to connect and relieve their loneliness. research team uses escape room model to study interprofessional collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research conducted at Niagara College has explored whether the fast-paced pressure of an escape room can be used as a learning tool to strengthen students’ collaboration skills across healthcare disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>“Designing Interprofessional Collaboration: How Escape Room Features Shape Interprofessional Collaboration Competencies in Mixed BScN-PN-PSW-Paramedic Student Teams” examined how escape room design elements, including puzzle complexity, role-based tasks, time limits, team composition, and discipline mix, influence collaboration competencies in interprofessional student groups compared with traditional classroom teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Professor and Program Coordinator of NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/programs\/bachelor-of-science-nursing\/\">Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing<\/a> (BScN) program Dr. Holldrid Odreman and his research team – formally known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/05\/08\/nursing-a-new-era-of-research\/\">Odreman’s Nursing Scholarship and Education Team<\/a> (ONSET) – the pilot study engaged students from the BScN, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/programs\/rpn-practical-nursing\/\">Practical Nursing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/programs\/psw-personal-support-worker\/\">Personal Support Worker<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/alliedhealth\/program\/paramedic\/\">Paramedic<\/a> programs within the Health Sciences Division.<\/p>\n<p>“We’re starting with healthcare professional students because we know that they are going to be the ones who implement the idea of collaboration once they get into a clinical setting,” said Dr. Odreman, who noted that most students do not get the opportunity to work closely with peers from other disciplines before they graduate.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thinking outside the box<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Traditionally, the concept of interprofessional collaboration has been taught in the classroom through case studies, mock interviews and patient actors.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot study was developed to explore the viability of an escape room being used as a non-traditional teaching method to help students understand the importance of interprofessional collaboration in patient care before they enter the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>“An escape room allows students to not only work together, but to really think together, to problem solve together and to ask themselves, ‘Did I listen to you or not? Did I follow you or did you follow me?'” said Dr. Odreman.<\/p>\n<p>“These are things that sometimes in the real clinical world, new practitioners, new nurses, new paramedics, new dental assistants, new PSWs don’t always sort out or learn how to do well until a number of years of practice.”<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Collaboration takes shape through the escape<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Twenty-five students were divided into eight interprofessional teams, randomized into two groups: Experimental (escape room) and Traditional (classroom setting).<\/p>\n<p>For the experimental teams, ONSET researchers transformed one of the labs within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/nursing\/\">Myhal School of Nursing<\/a> into an escape room environment.<\/p>\n<p>“The overall picture of the escape room is that you’re solving a case of a patient who has gone from normal to showing certain signs and symptoms… you have to figure out what’s going on with that patient through a series of puzzles,” explained second-year BScN student Christian Baltus, who is ONSET co-investigator and research activities team lead.<\/p>\n<p>Each team had 55 minutes to solve the puzzles, which were customized to the specific disciplines – nursing, PSW and paramedicine – and based on skills already taught in the classroom. Students were required to demonstrate their knowledge by answering the questions tailored to their profession and helping teammates answer theirs, working together to unlock boxes and complete other common escape room elements to move on to the next puzzle. Being able to be involved in that has just been a great experience,” added Klapatiuk, who first participated in research as a student volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the pilot study have become a catalyst for expanded research into the topic. The team is continuing to explore the concept through a study called “Evaluating the Effectiveness of Escape Room Simulation on Registered Nursing Student Leadership Development in Interprofessional Teams: A Randomized Controlled Trial.” The project sets out to evaluate the effectiveness of an escape room-based simulation in developing leadership skills among RN students.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Inspiring research involvement in students<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ONSET volunteer coordinator Brayden Robichaud has also grown into his research assistant role after supporting previous studies as a student volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s honestly amazing to be a part of because there’s nothing like it,” said Robichaud, who is also in his second-year of the BScN program.<\/p>\n<p>“This is not something I thought I would be interested in coming into the program and as much as it takes a lot of time, a lot of work, and a lot of dedication, I think it’s very much shown me what I’m capable of and what an actual team is capable of,” he added.<\/p>\n<p>The team received additional support from first- and second-year BScN students who joined the study in volunteer research assistant roles. Maya Thibault, Marley Hogan and Mike Zammit took on participant recruitment, while Jeny Benjamin and Ada Iysa-Bello handled data collection.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sharing the impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Baltus, Klapatiuk, Robichaud and fellow ONSET member Ryan NcNally, a Master of Nursing student who is currently completing his graduate studies at the University of Toronto, presented a poster on the escape room pilot study at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/05\/08\/innovative-health-research-takes-centre-stage-at-niagara-college\/\">Niagara Health Knowledge Institute’s sixth annual Research Day<\/a>, hosted at the Daniel J. The poster was designed to reflect the experience of a student participant, aiming to visually capture what it feels like to engage in the escape room environment itself.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The team also submitted an e-poster presentation on the study to the <a href=\"https:\/\/rnao.ca\/\">Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) website<\/a> for National Nursing Week, May 11-17.<\/p>\n<p>“The opportunity to work with Dr. Odreman is an experience that changed my whole trajectory in nursing. Often, nursing students learn about research but few genuine opportunities exist to really be involved to the extent that I do now,” said McNally, who started working with Dr. Odreman in 2023 while completing his bachelor’s degree at Brock University where Dr. Odreman has also taught.<\/p>\n<p>McNally noted that being the external research activities leader for ONSET, alongside his graduate studies at the University of Toronto, has pushed him toward a path in research and academia.<\/p>\n<p>“The mentorship [Dr. Odreman] has offered is something I now aspire to model with the students I precept and the colleagues I work alongside at ONSET, as we all continue to learn and grow together,” he said. “I have made so many cherished friends and connections along the way, and I am truly grateful to be a part of something this special.”<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ONSET has been accepted to participate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigmanursing.org\/connect-engage\/meetings-events\/congress\">37th International Nursing Research Congress<\/a>, happening in Toronto from July 16-18. Baltus and McNally will present on a previous study titled “Virtual Reality Simulation Prebrief: Promoting Psychological Safety and Clinical Reasoning.”<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious conference is part of the International Honor Society of Nursing (SIGMA) and brings together a vibrant community of students, faculty, clinicians, and leaders in the nursing field who are conducting research on technology, Secretary of State – Labour visited Niagara College’s Welland Campus to tour technology and trades labs.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State for Labour Zerucelli and his team were greeted by NC President Sean Kennedy and Vice-President, Research, Innovation, and Strategic Enterprises, Dr. Marc Nantel.<\/p>\n<p>As Secretary of State for Labour, Zerucelli’s mandate is focused on strengthening Canada’s workforce, supporting apprenticeships and skills training, and advancing practical, collaborative labour policies that protect workers while helping Canadian businesses grow and compete.<\/p>\n<p>NC’s Mabel Watt, Director, Government Relations, Duane Bender, Dean of Media, Trades and Technology, and Associate Deans Maura Lecce (Technology) and Nadja Bressan (Trades), were also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>On their first stop, Program Coordinator, Alexander McGlashan toured Secretary of State for Labour Zerucelli and his team through NC’s Photonics and <a href=\"http:\/\/niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/defence-systems-engineering-technology\/\">Defence Systems Engineering Technology<\/a> labs to learn about the new program to train drone developers beginning this fall – a direct response to government priorities and labour market needs.<\/p>\n<div workers to support industry growth. Drawing on insights from fire, EMS, police, and military organizations, the discussion focused on NC’s role as a bridge to connect end users with drone manufacturers and advancing drone research. One student shared that they had left dissatisfying career to pursue a passion for woodworking. Another explained that after completing a university degree in Human Resources and spending several years feeling unsatisfied in the field, she decided to attend NC on the recommendation of a friend.<\/p>\n<p>“It’s an exciting time to do what you’re doing,” said Secretary of State for Labour Zerucelli, emphasizing the growing demand for skilled tradespeople and thanking the students for pursuing careers in the field. “With everything going on in the world, we are focused on building in our country and providing opportunities for you.”<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State for Labour Zerucelli emphasized the government’s efforts to encourage businesses to take on apprentices and support them in earning their Red Seal certification.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Giorgi, Construction Renovations Technologist, highlighted how students benefit from an introductory mechanical class that allows them to build foundational knowledge and explore different skills before choosing a specialization.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State for Labour Zerucelli noted that many new construction projects now rely on prefabricated components built in factories.
