cross-generational friendship that would blossom between them, nor how Robert's role in Ting Ting's art would challenge traditional ideas of the artist-muse relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This touching Fund, <\/strong>which helps support students in the School of Environment and Horticulture through bursaries for those facing financial need.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly named the Basil Bursary, the financial award launched in 2016. It was named in honour of Basil, the former official cat of the College’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncteachinggreenhouse.ca\/\">Teaching Greenhouse<\/a> who passed away in 2019. Over the years, the bursary has been primarily funded through the sale of plush keychains featuring Basil’s likeness.<\/p>\n<p>While keychain sales continue to support the newly renamed fund, the College community and the public can now donate directly at the Teaching Greenhouse or online.<\/p>\n<p>“The Seed Fund is a powerful way to support student success through the spirit of collective giving,” said Emily O’Connor, Development Officer. “Every contribution, no matter the size, helps remove financial barriers and provides students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Together, we can plant the seeds for brighter futures.”<\/p>\n<p>Evan DiValentino, Dean of Business and Environment, applauded the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>“When you shop at the NC Teaching Greenhouse in Niagara-on-the-Lake, you already support applied learning through student-grown plants. Power Award.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A surprise scholarship presentation made the third annual Niagara College Car Show about more than just classic cars, as the community turned out in droves for the annual event.<\/p>\n<p>With the rain holding off and more than 200 vehicles on display at the Welland Campus, the event celebrated both automotive passion and the next generation of automotive technicians.<\/p>\n<p>Among them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/motive-power-automotive\/\">Motive Power<\/a> program student Bailey Melnychuk of Airdrie, Alberta who was awarded the Wayne Toth Motive Power Award by the former coordinator himself.<\/p>\n<div Toth.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>“At this event last year, we announced a brand-new scholarship – a surprise to its namesake, Wayne Toth,” said Duane Bender, Dean of Media, Trades and Technology. “Today, we have another surprise in store: to announce the inaugural recipient of the award.”<\/p>\n<p>Melnychuk shared a few words with the crowd:<\/p>\n<p>“I know I’m far from home, but I wanted to chase a dream I’ve had for a long time. One question that I am always asked is why I chose Niagara college, and the truth is, I don’t really have one, but I am glad I did. I was alone and I had no idea what I was doing, but the teachers within this program helped me find my way. the highlights of Melnychuk’s time at NC were working in the pits at Merrittville Speedway, helping train firefighters and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/06\/05\/nc-strengthens-ev-safety-training-for-first-responders-fire-investigators\/\">fire investigators on electric vehicle safety<\/a>, and restoring a V8 engine in the automotive lab, which she finished with a coat of pink paint.<\/p>\n<p>“I can’t wait to use what I’ve learned from the program in the field, and I hope to make my teachers proud,” said Melnychuk.<\/p>\n<div legacy of donor support helps NC Technology students reach new heights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1974, what started as a modest recognition of student achievement, supported by just $212, was never about the dollar value of the award itself, but the commitment of Niagara College faculty to recognizing students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/construction-engineering-technology\/\">Construction Engineering Technology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/civil-engineering\/\">Civil Engineering Technician<\/a> programs.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Dino Morabito, who joined the College in 2007, said his predecessors were committed to expanding support for students.<\/p>\n<p>“Recognizing the need to do more, our faculty began reaching out to our industry partners in the early 1990s,” said Morabito. “The response was outstanding, and many groups stepped up to help us expand our impact.”<\/p>\n<p>Morabito said groups like American Institute of Constructors, Canadian Asphalt Association, Construction Specifications Canada, General Contractors Association of Niagara, OACETT, CIQS, and StuCor Construction were among the first to support NC Technology students.<\/p>\n<p>“These awards are provided to students to assist them in achieving success in their studies and in many cases providing the means to be able to continue their studies in the form of tuition assistance,” said Morabito.<\/p>\n<p>As school-specific award ceremonies at NC evolved, faculty in the School of Technology preserved the tradition, creating an opportunity for students to be recognized and network student achievement through 57 awards made possible by 26 donors contributing more than $60,000 in support.<\/p>\n<p>Over nearly three decades, the number of awards has grown more than fivefold, underscoring the strong and growing support of donors, many of whom are College alumni.<\/p>\n<div returning to fund the very same awards they won as students,” said Morabito. “Today, our annual Awards Night is more than just a ceremony; it is a premier networking event where students and industry leaders come together to celebrate success and build the future.”<\/p>\n<p>NC President Sean Kennedy, Vice-President, Advancement, Gord Arbeau, and Vice-President, Academic, Dr. Fay Lim-Lambie, and Associate Dean of Technology, Maura Lecce, attended the recent ceremony, welcoming donor organizations, families and individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Haist from Thorold just completed his first year in the Construction Engineering Technology program. post-secondary tourism and hospitality talents in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Sheree Loyloy, who graduated from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/program\/tourism-management\/\">Tourism Management and Business Development<\/a> two-year diploma program in June, was selected as one of 14 winners of Baxter Media’s Student Ambassador program (BSAP). The Thorold resident was the sole representative chosen from NC for the prestigious national mentorship initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The program, which marked its twelfth year in 2026, is Canada’s only travel and tourism student mentoring project. It also gave me the confidence to believe that I can make a positive contribution to the tourism industry,” she said.<\/p>\n<p>“Personally, this award reminds me that hard work and perseverance can lead to meaningful opportunities. Professionally, it is an achievement that I am proud to include on my r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and will help me stand out as I begin my career. It has also connected me with industry professionals and given me valuable experience that will benefit me in the future.”<\/p>\n<p>Loyloy enrolled in the program after high school, drawn by the College’s strong reputation for hands-on learning and industry connections.<\/p>\n<p>“I enjoy meeting new people, learning about different destinations, and creating positive experiences for others. I also like that tourism is always changing, which means there are always new opportunities to learn and grow,” she said. “The Tourism Management – Business Development program stood out to me because it combines business, sales, marketing, and tourism, which are all important skills for the industry.”<\/p>\n<p>During her studies, Loyloy completed a co-op placement as a sales associate at the Table Rock Centre in Niagara Falls. In that role, she welcomed international visitors, answered questions about local attractions, recommended regional experiences, and assisted with visitor information.<\/p>\n<p>“This experience strengthened my customer service, communication, and sales skills while giving me valuable hands-on experience in the tourism industry. It also showed me the importance of creating a positive first impression and delivering excellent guest experiences,” she said.<\/p>\n<p>Applying what she learned to real-world projects and presentations was one of the most rewarding aspects of her college journey. To secure the BSAP title, she challenged herself by preparing and delivering a 15- to 20-minute webinar to a panel of industry judges.<\/p>\n<p>“Niagara College gave me practical experience through presentations, projects, and my co-op placement, while also helping me improve my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills,” she said. “I feel much more prepared and confident as I begin my career.”<\/p>\n<p>Ambassadors were selected based on a combination of academic success, industry and community involvement, leadership skills, and the skill-testing project. Only one graduating student is designated as the Baxter Student Ambassador from each of the 14 participating institutions across Canada, which also include Algonquin College, Centennial College, Holland College, Conestoga Collage, Humber College, SAIT, Capilano University, MacEwan University, St. Clair College, Mohawk College, BCIT and George Brown College.<\/p>\n<p>Since graduating, Loyloy has continued to put her skills to work in the industry by serving global visitors at the Table Rock Welcome Centre, while searching for long-term career opportunities directly focused on growth in the tourism sector.<\/p>\n<p>“I am excited to continue building my experience while working toward a career that aligns with my education and passion for tourism. I hope to work in a role where I can apply the knowledge and skills I gained at Niagara College while continuing to learn from industry professionals,” she said. “My long-term goal is to build a successful career where I can contribute to creating meaningful travel experiences and supporting the growth of the tourism industry.”<\/p>\n<p>Looking back on her time at NC, Loyloy was thankful for the community that supported her path to national recognition.<\/p>\n<p>“I am thankful for the opportunities Niagara College has given me, both inside and outside the classroom.
