This campaign started in 1991 to call out and speak up on gender-based violence, and to renew our commitment to ending violence against women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, we also observe the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/women-gender-equality.canada.ca\/en\/commemorations-celebrations\/16-days\/national-day-remembrance.html\">National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women<\/a>\u00a0during the 16 Days to commemorate the women who were murdered during the tragic mass shooting at Polytechnique Montr\u00e9al on December 6, 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone has the right to live free from violence, yet gender-based violence remains a pressing issue in Canada. We invite you to join each day in our #16Days of Activism to learn more about gender-based violence, available resources, and how you can play an active role in preventing this issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 25:<\/strong> Learn more about 16 Days of Activism &amp; Gender-Based Violence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/women-gender-equality.canada.ca\/en\/commemorations-celebrations\/16-days\/16-ways-help-end-gender-based-violence.html\">16 Ways<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianwomen.org\/the-facts\/gender-based-violence\/\">The Facts: Gender-Based Violence<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/women-gender-equality.canada.ca\/en\/gender-based-violence\/gender-based-violence-its-not-just.html\">Gender-Based Violence: It&#8217;s Not Just<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>November 26:<\/strong> Place a submission for <em>Consent is Key&#8217;<\/em>s <strong>Art Contest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Five winners will be given a $100 gift card, and their artwork will be featured in future <em>Consent is Key <\/em>campaigns. All mediums of artwork can be submitted, but they must relate to one of the contest themes. Submissions are due by November 30. In Canada, research shows Indigenous women are 400 per cent more likely than other Canadians to go missing. The problem is so pervasive that the Canadian government does not know how many Indigenous women are missing or have been murdered. The links below are great resources to learn more about MMIWG2S+ people.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zdzM6krfaKY\">Our Sisters in Spirit Documentary<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onwa.ca\/learning-resources-mmiwg\">Ontario Native Women&#8217;s Association &#8211; Learning Resources<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>November 30:<\/strong> Register to attend the Gender-Based Violence 101 information session:<\/p>\n<p>This virtual info session will be led by NC&#8217;s Sexual Violence Prevention &amp; Response Coordinator, Elysia Dardarian and will be held via Microsoft Teams from 11 a.m. &#8211; 12p.m. Register for the info session <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/r\/wSwm3rY2iW\">here<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>December 1:<\/strong> Watch:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/ca\/title\/80197526\"><em>Sex Education<\/em><\/a>: a comedy-drama that follows a teenage boy and his mother, a sex therapist, as they explore high school drama, new relationships, consent, sexual assault, and more.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvo.org\/video\/documentaries\/a-better-man-0\"><em>A Better Man<\/em><\/a><em>: <\/em>a Canadian documentary about a woman who meets with the man who abused her to see if he can take responsibility to heal and repair the harms he created.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nS0kZqs0gC8\"><em>The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open<\/em><\/a>: Set in Vancouver, this movie explores the complex themes of racialization, gender, and colonization through the bonds that two women form with one another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>December 2:<\/strong> Knowing about healthy relationships:<\/p>\n<p>Understanding healthy relationships is one key way to stay safe from violence. Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/\">Healthy Relationships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 3:<\/strong> Understand the connections between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sace.ca\/learn\/gender-and-sexuality\/\">gender and sexuality, bias, and sexual violence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 4:<\/strong> Get familiar with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sace.ca\/learn\/consent-conversations\/\">consent<\/a> and what conversations about sexual preferences and boundaries could look like:<br \/>\nLearn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sace.ca\/learn\/rejection-resilience\/\">Rejection Resilience<\/a> and how to navigate rejection from romantic or sexual interests, and learn tools to better cope with rejection. It&#8217;s essential to think about the impact our words and behaviours can have, rather than the intent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 5: <\/strong>Learn what your role is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainn.org\/articles\/your-role-preventing-sexual-assault\">preventing sexual assault<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>The only person responsible for committing sexual assault is a perpetrator, but all of us can look out for each other&#8217;s safety. Whether it&#8217;s giving someone a safe ride home from a party or directly confronting a person who is engaging in threatening behavior, anyone can help prevent sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 6: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eventactions.com\/eareg.aspx?ea=Rsvp&amp;invite=gd3m2kypxpwkav7jpmcxtxdg1ty4t83uu5hr28xe7sxns931j2a6\">Attend the National Day of Remembrance &amp; Action on Violence Against Women event<\/a> at Niagara College:<\/p>\n<p>December 6 is the anniversary of the Polytechnique massacre, where an armed man walked into the engineering school where he killed 14 women and injured 10 others before shooting himself. Gender-based violence remains tragically common in Canada. On December 6, we honour the memory of the victims of the Polytechnique massacre, the thousands of murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls, as well as members of the Niagara community and those around the world who we have lost to gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>During the event we will be joined by four community members who are dedicated in their work to ending gender-based violence. Learn about the efforts of their organizations and our role in ending this violence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elaine Berwald, the Anti-Human Trafficking Liaison, Niagara Chapter &#8211; Native Women<\/li>\n<li>Erika Mitrovics, Family Support Worker &#8211; Breaking Free from Family Violence, Niagara Chapter &#8211; Native Women<\/li>\n<li>Nicole Regehr, Executive Director, Gillian&#8217;s Place<\/li>\n<li>Samantha Forbes, Manager of Prevention and Public Education, Birchway Niagara<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>December 7:<\/strong> Know your role in supporting people who have experienced gender-based violence. If a friend tells you they&#8217;re experiencing gender-based violence:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Listen to them, and don&#8217;t interrupt. People need time to process an overwhelming situation &#8211; moments of silence are okay.<\/li>\n<li>Believe them. It takes courage to talk about gender-based violence. Don&#8217;t dismiss their feelings, no matter how small the incident may seem to you.<\/li>\n<li>Let them know it was not their fault. No matter what they were doing, wearing, or saying, gender-based violence is never the fault of the victim\/survivor. Validate their feelings.<\/li>\n<li>Ask how you can help. Depending on the situation, your friend might need anything from a hug to professional support. Don&#8217;t assume what those needs are &#8212; ask, instead.<\/li>\n<li>Respect their decisions. It&#8217;s up to the person experiencing gender-based violence to decide how they want to respond. Whatever they choose, have their back.<\/li>\n<li>Let them know about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/consentiskey\/resources\">resources<\/a> they can use whenever they&#8217;re ready.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>December 8:<\/strong> Listen to one of the many podcasts about gender-based violence through the <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianwomen.org\/podcast\/\">Canadian Women&#8217;s Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 9:<\/strong> Learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadiancentretoendhumantrafficking.ca\/signs-of-human-trafficking\/\">Human Trafficking<\/a>, including warning signs and ways you can help those you may be worried about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 10:<\/strong> International Human Rights Day. Each person is entitled to fundamental rights, including the right to equality, and the right to life, liberty and security of the person. It also recognizes the right to freedom of religion and speech and the right to participate in the cultural life of the community.
