inviting employees, students and alumni to register for the next edition of its Living Library event series, taking place on October 14 from 1 to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The event comes following the launch of NC’s new Indigenous Education Strategy, <em>Paddling Together<\/em>, and will provide an opportunity to explore Indigenous education, leadership and the College’s ongoing commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation process.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 12<sup>th<\/sup> edition, the Living Library series continues to create meaningful opportunities for open dialogue, reflection and learning through conversations that highlight lived experiences and diverse perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>This year’s event will feature an open and unscripted conversation with Leah Hogan, NC’s Director of Indigenous Education, moderated by Maxine Semple, Director of Cultural and Global Engagement.<\/p>\n<p>A proud Bear Clan woman from the Oneida Nation of the Thames, Hogan is passionate about exploring relational learning and Indigenous identity restoration through storytelling and land-based education. With more than 20 years of experience in the Ontario college system, she is dedicated to advancing Indigenous self-determination and creating safer, more inclusive learning spaces for all students.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Living Library series, the conversation will offer an honest reflection on Hogan’s journey as an Indigenous leader in post-secondary education over the past two decades. She will share her experiences and the evolving realities of decolonization and Indigenization in practice, while reflecting on her recent work helping to shape NC’s new Indigenous Education Strategy<\/p>\n<p>The discussion will also explore how the strategy connects to her experiences and vision for Indigenous Education at NC, what continues to motivate her in this work and her hopes for the future.<\/p>\n<p>The Living Library event series contributes to the wholistic experience of Niagara College and the wider community by offering opportunities to engage with the lived experiences of equity-deserving communities. The LLC team – at times in partnership with Indigenous Education – creates respectful spaces for individuals from varied backgrounds to connect through open dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>Through these conversations, the series aims to challenge misunderstanding, encourage reflection and provide educational opportunities that contribute to building a vibrant and inclusive society.<\/p>\n<p>Those registered for the event are able to submit questions to Leah in advance via the NC Engage app.<\/p>\n<p>Watch parties will be held in both IE lounges for the NC community to view the Living Library successful start to term. This is my first September at Niagara College, and I am excited to be part of the kickoff to the new academic year. The past month has been filled with positive energy, and I am inspired by our shared commitment to academic excellence as I meet and engage with faculty, staff and students.\u00a0\u00a0It is an honour to serve as the Vice President, Academic and to work alongside our talented teams and college leadership to ensure that we provide the highest quality teaching and learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>I am excited to share some of the key academic priorities that will guide our work this year. As President Kennedy has shared, the postsecondary landscape continues to change. Academic success and enrolment growth will be among our foremost priorities this year.\u00a0\u00a0As we work to grow our enrolments, it’s important to remember that student recruitment is only one part of the equation; student retention is equally important. More than ever, our collective focus must extend across the full student journey — from entry into programs through to successful transition, progression into upper levels and ultimately to graduation.\u00a0\u00a0Our goal is to see our graduates gainfully employed and driving economic growth in key sectors in the Niagara region and beyond.\u00a0\u00a0Work-integrated learning, applied education and attainment of employability skills remains central to the education we provide here at NC.<\/p>\n<p>A second defining priority will be the launch and development of Niagara College’s Academic Plan which will be developed in parallel with a new Strategic Plan.\u00a0The Academic Plan will build on our strengths and will connect to the College’s broader vision, ensuring that teaching, learning and student academic outcomes are aligned with institutional priorities. NC’s academic plan will serve as the roadmap to operationalizing academic priorities. Faculty and staff will have meaningful opportunities to engage and help shape this work. I am excited to hear your insights as we advance the future of teaching and learning at NC.<\/p>\n<p>As the fall term progresses,\u00a0we will continue building momentum toward our institutional College Quality Assurance Audit Process (CQAAP) audit scheduled for next Spring. The Red Dress has become a symbol of remembrance for the lives lost and the families and communities impacted by the ongoing crisis of violence against MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ people.<\/p>\n<p>This initiative is being organized by Niagara College’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/edi\/\">Equity, Diversity and Inclusion<\/a> team, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/indigenouseducation\/team\/\">Indigenous Education<\/a>. Each Red Dress will feature a QR code, inviting the NC community to learn more about the significance of this day and the call for justice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community event<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The St. Catharines Downtown Association will be hosting the <a href=\"https:\/\/mydowntown.ca\/sistersinspirit\/\">Sisters in Spirit Walk<\/a>, on Oct. 4. in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S) people.<\/p>\n<p>The day will begin with a sunrise gathering at Willowbank School of Restoration in Queenston. Walkers are asked to meet at the St. Catharines Public Library at 12:30 p.m. The walk will conclude at the Marilyn I. Printup created the film as a student in NC’s Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film program to explore the question of calling a national public inquiry into Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onwa.ca\/learning-resources-mmiwg\">Learning Resources<\/a> from the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA);<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/safe-passage.ca\/\">Safe Passage<\/a> (an initiative of Native Women’s Association of Canada);<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/finding_dawn\/\">Finding Dawn<\/a>: a compelling documentary that explores the epidemic of missing or murdered Indigenous women in Canada;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/missingandmurdered\/\">Missing and Murdered<\/a>: The Unsolved Cases of Indigenous Women and Girls (CBC);<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-moral-argument-to-search-the-landfill-in-winnipeg-for-murdered-indigenous-women-212594\">A Moral Argument to Search the Landfill in Winnipeg for Murdered Indigenous Women<\/a> (article on the Search the Landfill movement, posted by The Conversation, Sept. 7, 2023); and<\/li>\n<li>NC’s Libraries and Learning Centres Indigenous Education <a href=\"https:\/\/nclibraries.niagaracollege.ca\/indigenoused\">sources page.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Support is available<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Learning about the experiences of MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ and residential school survivors can be difficult and may bring up strong emotions. Support is available to members of the NC community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Residential School Survivor supports<\/strong>: a list of supports is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/indigenouseducation\/studentresources\/\">Indigenous Education website<\/a>, including the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Talk 4 Healing<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beendigen.com\/programs\/talk4healing\/\">Beendigen’s<\/a> Talk4Healing Helpline offers help, support, and resources 24\/7 to Indigenous women and their families through talk, text, and chat. calendars for Niagara College’s annual United Way workplace campaign, kicking off Tuesday, October 6.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the NC Cares campaign marks a new chapter for our longstanding partnership with United Way. Earlier this year, United Way joined with United Ways across the region to form United Way Golden Horseshoe – a new regional organization designed to strengthen collaboration and support while maintaining a strong focus on local impact.<\/p>\n<p>For Niagara, that local commitment remains at the heart of United Way’s work. In 2025-2026, United Way’s support in Niagara helped 139,497 people through 44 agencies and 87 programs and projects.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the NC community comes together to contribute to that impact. Through the continued generosity and support of our employees, NC has now contributed a cumulative total of more than one million dollars through our United Way workplace campaigns, and we look forward to continuing to make a positive difference in our community.<\/p>\n<p>“I’ve seen firsthand the incredible generosity and community spirit of Niagara College, and I’m always inspired by the way NC employees step up to support their neighbours,” said Kevin Jong, Senior Director, Corporate Philanthropy, United Way Golden Horseshoe. “What makes NC’s support of United Way so powerful is that what is raised locally, stays local, helping individuals and families right here in Niagara and strengthening the programs and services our community relies on.”<\/p>\n<p><strong>Launch day will feature online engagement, kicking off with the opening of payroll deductions through the NC payroll portal. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>“Being part of NC Cares has been such a meaningful experience because it’s a reminder of just how caring and connected our Niagara College community truly is,” said Sumathi. “Every contribution, whether it’s attending an event, making a donation, volunteering, or simply helping spread the word, has the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people in our community.”<\/p>\n<p>“After being part of NC Cares for the past few years, I’m always amazed by what our college community can accomplish when we come together,” said Neamtu. “We show up for our students every day – NC Cares gives us the opportunity to bring that same spirit of care and generosity to the communities we’re proud to be part of.”<\/p>\n<p>NC has a strong history of giving back and supporting our community. 50 years of NC history preserved through Niagara News digital archive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For nearly five decades, Niagara News, NC’s former student-run newspaper, captured life at the College, from campus events and student experiences to community news and milestones that helped shape its history.<\/p>\n<p>Originally created by the College’s Journalism-Advertising Department in 1971, the newspaper provided students with hands-on reporting experience while keeping the campus community informed.<\/p>\n<p>Now, nearly the entire collection has been preserved digitally and made available online through NC’s Libraries and Learning Centres (LLC).<\/p>\n<p>The newly digitized collection spans from the earliest issue in the College’s archives, published in April 1971, to the newspaper’s final issue on March 13, 2020. With only a small number of issues missing, the archive provides a look back at almost 50 years of College and community history.<\/p>\n<p>The project was led by NC Library Technicians Kent Reynolds and Sheri Waldie, who coordinated the scanning of decades of physical issues and their addition to the College’s online archive.<\/p>\n<p>Issues from 2010 to 2020 had previously been digitized and provided to the LLC by the Journalism-Print program. Earlier editions, however, remained in physical form in a filing cabinet in the College’s archive room.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing the importance of protecting the aging collection, the LLC digitized the newspapers to preserve this piece of College history and make it more accessible for the NC community to explore.<\/p>\n<p>“As a graduate of the former Journalism-Print program here at Niagara College, I know the integrity that went into the reporting and creation of these papers,” said Waldie. “It’s so important to preserve the valuable contribution that print media made to the historical events and facts of the college and community.”<\/p>\n<p>Almost 50 years of news, first-hand accounts, opinions and records of significant events are now preserved as a resource for historical research, general interest and anyone interested in exploring NC’s past.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A newspaper by students, for the College community<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Niagara News<\/em> itself was an important part of the College’s history.<\/p>\n<p>Originally created by Niagara College’s Journalism-Advertising Department, the newspaper served a dual purpose: providing campus and community news while giving students a practical newsroom experience. In later years, it was produced by students in the Journalism-Print program.<\/p>\n<p>Much like reporters working at a community newspaper, students were assigned beats and responsible for covering College events, academic departments and programs, the Student Administrative Council, student life and community news. The paper also featured special features and opinion pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Producing the newspaper was an extensive undertaking for students on top of their regular class hours. grad to lead hands-on NC Craft Masterclass Sept. 29"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For recent graduate Lachlan Robertson, beer isn’t just a beverage; it’s a study in chemistry, history and craft.<\/p>\n<p>Now the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/program\/brewmaster-brewery-operations\/\">Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management<\/a> program alumnus is ready to tap into his expertise to lead an upcoming NC Craft Masterclass, “Beer: 4 Ingredients.”<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, September 29 (6:30 to 8:30 p.m.) at the NC Craft Beverage Centre, the interactive session invites the public to look past the pint glass and discover how just four basic building blocks – water, malt, hops and yeast – can produce an endless spectrum of flavour.<\/p>\n<p>“One of the things we love about NC Craft is the opportunity to take the knowledge and expertise developed in our programs and share it directly with the community,” said Brad Tandy, Events and Marketing Coordinator with NC Craft. “Lachlan brings a great combination of technical knowledge and enthusiasm to this masterclass, and we’re excited to give guests a chance to experience beer from a completely different perspective.”<\/p>\n<p>For Robertson, who is currently expanding his credentials as an Artisan Distilling student, leading the session marks a proud full-circle moment.<\/p>\n<p>“I’m thrilled and honoured to have been given an opportunity to display the intricacies of the beer world to the public, and to provide a snapshot of the unique learning experience that I was given through Niagara College,” he said. “Events like this are crucial to the continued appreciation and success of small breweries as it provides the public an inside look at the challenges and care that goes into crafting products that are enjoyed so widely.”<\/p>\n<p>During his time in the Brewmaster program, Robertson served as class chair for Project Brew – the program’s signature beer festival. That experience, paired with his time behind the beer counter at the NC Craft Beverage Centre, revealed a genuine community appetite for brewing know-how.<\/p>\n<p>“Having the chance to interact with patrons at our Project Brew event … showed me there was a hunger for more knowledge related to our craft,” he said. “Presenting that knowledge in a setting such as this is a fantastic way to keep our patrons engaged with the Teaching Brewery and provide a few tasty treats along the way.”<\/p>\n<p>Robertson credits the College’s faculty and the practical training he gained in the program for giving him the technical foundation to demystify complex brewing science for an audience.<\/p>\n<p>“The main way the program was able to assist me was providing a comprehensive education that tied together the history, technical and practical aspects of the brewing industry,” he said. “The information, passed along by such a wonderful and engaging group of professors and brewers really gave me confidence in the world of beer.”<\/p>\n<p>Attendees can expect a structured “compare and contrast” flight to showcase how altering a single variable changes everything from mouthfeel to aroma. Robertson will guide guests through the sweetness and colour provided by malt, the bitterness and bouquet of hops, the complex fermentation flavours created by yeast, and the critical, mineral-driven profile of water.<\/p>\n<p>“Coupling some historical comparisons, historical and scientific explanations behind the choices made within a brewery setting and ingredient handling procedures, guests will be able to further understand what makes each style of beer created here at NC so representative,” said Robertson.<br \/>\nAbove all, he hopes guests leave with an educated palate and stories to share around their own tables.<\/p>\n<p>“Mostly, I’m excited for our guests to try those beers with the benefit of perspective,” he said. “Now they’ll be able to pass it along to their friends and family and having gained a deeper understanding of what went into the can.<br \/>\nTickets for the two-hour evening session are $59 for the general public and $49 for NC Craft Club members. Centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) this week's feature film is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/honour-to-senator-murray-sinclair\/\">Honour to Senator Murray Sinclair.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\r\n <div class=\"panel is-style-blue pl wfw\">\r\n\r\n\t\t \t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>As the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Senator Murray Sinclair was a key figure in raising global awareness of the atrocities of Canada's residential school system. With determination, wisdom and kindness, Senator Sinclair remains steadfast in his belief that the path to actual reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people requires understanding and accepting often difficult truths about Canada's past and present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alanis Obomsawin shares the powerful speech the Senator gave when he accepted the WFM-Canada World Peace Award, interspersing the heartbreaking testimonies of former students imprisoned at residential schools.
