Kristen Hoekstra is graduating from the Community Integration through Co-operative Education program.

When Kristen Hoekstra was told her in-person class time would be significantly reduced because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it didn’t deter her from relocating to Niagara from Thunder Bay to start the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program.

She knew deep down she was meant to study at Niagara College.

“In my heart and soul, this was the place I wanted to go,” the 22-year-old said. “I researched and was accepted to other CICE programs, but I chose NC because it has the whole package: It has beautiful surroundings, a welcoming atmosphere and I loved the idea of living in the Niagara region. I felt like it was calling me here.”

She wasn’t disappointed. In fact, Hoekstra, who graduates June 23, said the CICE program has taught her life skills that have increased her independence, decision-making skills and self-confidence.

“It has taught me that I can achieve my dreams for the future,” she said. “Graduating means that I have accomplished so much. It gives me the confidence to set my goals higher and not be afraid of failing but just going for it.”

The NC experience also opened up opportunities for Hoekstra to volunteer at the college and in the community. By serving as a mentor for other students starting the CICE program, it’s boosted her own tenacity.

“I know what it feels like to be overwhelmed and confused about the future,” she said. “I wanted to inspire other students to believe in themselves and have the opportunity to dream big and live a full life.”

What is Kristen Hoekstra up to now?

We caught up with Hoekstra ahead of her convocation ceremony to find out what she’s been up to since completing the CICE program.

Hoekstra, who now lives in Thorold, said she’s given herself a “well-deserved break” since completing her studies, which included a co-op placement at the hot meals/quick service counter at Sobeys.

“It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot of kitchen work, which is really helpful because learning new kitchen skills allows me to cook healthy, delicious food,” she said. “This experience also provided me with confidence to try new skills in the kitchen.”

Now Hoekstra is turning her attention toward her new YouTube channel called “Kristen Glows,” where she creates videos three times a week that she hopes bring positivity, inspire others, and help people feel good about themselves.

“I gained a lot of my inspiration by following social influencer Jessii Vee, who overcame many challenges and has led an extraordinary life,” Hoekstra said. “My goal is to have the independence to live on my own, travel the world, and explore other areas of lifelong learning. I have an interest in growing my artistic talents through social media and becoming a motivational influencer.”

Congratulations to Hoekstra and to all graduating students this week!
