Faith Marcel, a professor in NC’s School of English Language Studies, is featured in this article from the University of Toronto, where she completed her PhD, for her work with Virtual Reality (VR) technologies.
Marcel, who teaches English for Academic Preparation at NC, designed a study using VR to enhance virtual classroom language teaching, helping students improve their vocabulary while learning English. Through the study, Marcel used a multimedia presentation platform called Nearpod to design a series of interactive modules for students, allowing them to practice their English while taking virtual field trips around the world.
The results of Marcel’s study showed that students who used VR had higher vocabulary test scores.

NC connection
Marcel and other NC faculty currently use Nearpod with VR when teaching international students in NC’s English for Academic Preparation (EAP) program. She says that her work with NC students helped in the preparation and design of her research study, which included 95 English language student participants overall.
“I was supported and encouraged by Niagara College throughout all of the stages of this research project,” said Marcel.
