What do five-week-old barnyard owls, sustainably-made jewellery, fly fishing workshops and paddle boarding demonstrations have in common?

They were all part of Niagara College’s Green Day event, held Sept. 24 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus. This was the eighth year for the event, which aims at putting sustainability in the spotlight for students, staff and the community.

Green Day organizer and Niagara College student Sarah Koudys – a second-year student in the Environmental Technician Field and Laboratory program who is completing her co-op as a sustainability technician in Facilities Management Services – said Green Day gives students an opportunity to learn more about what’s being done at Niagara College and the community when it comes to environmental sustainability, and how they can become involved.

She noted that one of this year’s initiatives was to celebrate National Tree Day with Tree Canada.

“We want to promote trees, green, community and get everyone together at the same time, and we want to show what happens when everyone gets together,” she said.

She also wanted to this year’s event even bigger and better than ever. The result? Even more vendors and volunteers took part.

“This is the biggest crowd we’ve had yet,” she said.
