On August 28, FIBA – the world governing body for basketball – announced the line-up for the new Central Board, among which NC’s Michele O’Keefe, associate director, Athletics and Recreation, will continue to represent Canada for her second term.
The announcement was made in Bejiing where O’Keefe was present among delegates from 156 national federations at the XXI Fiba Congress. The world congress happens every four years just before the start of the men’s World Cup. O’Keefe was nominated by Canada Basketball to stand for election for a second term, and is among a small group of Canadian athletic leaders who sit on world sports boards. Malian politician and former president of FIBA Africa Hamane Niang was elected President of FIBA, succeeding Horacio Muratore of Argentina.
The newly-formed Central Board will meet for the first time on Saturday, September 14 in Beijing, the final weekend of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019. FIBA’s priorities for the next four years are the growth of the FIBA family, strengthening of national federations, and women in basketball.
“I’m very honoured to continue my work with FIBA and have input into world basketball policies,” said O’Keefe. “Having conversations with my international colleagues allows me to extoll the virtues of Niagara and share the offerings we have at Niagara College.”
