Niagara Now reported on a new initiative at Niagara College. NC joined 17 craft breweries and one cider house on BrewON, an effort by the Ontario Hop Growers’ Association to encourage locally grown craft beers using Ontario hops.
Participating breweries are presented gold-level logos for brews crafted using 100 per cent locally grown hops, and a standard-level distinction is presented for those using 50 to 99 per cent. NC’s Teaching Brewery has been using locally grown hops since the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program began in 2010.
Third-semester student Elizabeth Beresford crafted the first NC beer to bear the gold BrewON sticker. Beresford said, “I believe it is so important to use Ontario or locally-grown products as much as possible and not just for brewing. It gives me a sense of pride knowing I have ingredients grown so close to home and I was so excited to have certified 100 per cent Ontario grown hops in my beer, as well as being able to advertise that fact on the can.”
