On Feb. 1, Niagara College staff spent the morning in the Niagara, Halton and Durham regions canvassing the homes of select applicants to NC to surprise them with their offers of admission, local swag, and for some students, their scholarships. For a handful of students in the local area, NC President Dan Patterson was at their doorstep for the surprise.

“Hi Joshua, my name is Dan Patterson and I’m the President of Niagara College. I’m here to present you with your offer of admission to Niagara College – congratulations!”

Joshua Lemire, a student from A.N. Myer Secondary School in Niagara Falls, was one of 14 of students from Niagara, chosen mostly at random, who were greeted at their doors by college officials with their acceptance letters, toting balloons, college swag and cookies and hot chocolate mix from Niagara College’s own Benchmark Restaurant. Twenty-six students from Halton and 18 students from Durham were also visited.

Along with their offer of admission, some students like Lemire were presented with a giant cheque for $1,000, an academic scholarship for Specialist High School Major (SHSM) applicants.

“We wanted to bring the welcoming spirit of Niagara College to applicants and their families and share in their milestone success,” said Patterson. “NC provides an unparalleled student experience, a hands-on education and support all throughout a student’s journey with us.”

NC documented the offer blitz on their Instagram and Twitter channels, sharing stories, photos and videos that captured the excitement of students and their parents.

“Students can expect a one-on-one experience at NC where they will work closely with their professors and peers in a supportive learning environment. We wanted to bring that approach to the doorstep of future students,” said Dorita Pentesco, director of marketing and student recruitment.

Sisters Marlee and Sydney Weinermann from Nelson High School in Burlington were at home, scrolling through Instagram, and saw that NC was on the road delivering offers to students. “What are the odds they’ll come to our house?” said Sydney to her sister just five minutes before NC staff showed up at their door.

The Weinermann’s were inspired to go into the field of emergency services by their high school guidance counselors; Sydney into Pre-health and Marlee into Police Foundations. “I want to help people,” said Sydney, to which Marlee added, “It’s my top school!”

“I went to the open house at Niagara College because I heard they have a good Sport Management program,” said Carson Dejong, a student from Oakville. “I love playing and talking about sports.”

To date, NC’s Admissions office has processed over 5,700 program acceptances (Fall and Winter 2019 terms) and mailed over 4,000 offer packages. NC continues to process applications to open programs daily, until programs are full. The competitive program section process for Fall term begins in March.
