Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film professor Luke Hutton is watching his summer’s worth of hard work outside of the College pay off as APTN airs his episodes of the TV documentary series The Other Side.
When he is not teaching third-year BRTF students at NC, Hutton works in the film industry as a freelance director, editor and writer. His most recent project involves directing a handful of episodes of The Other Side, a ghost hunting documentary series with an Indigenous theme. Hutton directed episodes two, four and eight of season four, now airing, and two episodes of season five, which is currently in the post-production stage.
“I found the topic really enticing, especially the Indigenous connection, so I agreed to do a handful of episodes for them,” said Hutton. “What’s great about working in the film and TV business is that you get to participate in unique scenarios that most people never get to experience.”
The producers of the show were willing to work around Hutton’s teaching schedule, allowing him to dive in on his summer breaks.
Hutton, who is now in his fourth year of teaching at the College, uses his industry experience to prepare his students to work in the film production field.
“Making effective films and TV, either scripted or documentary, does not happen by luck. There’s tried and true knowledge, craft, technique, structure and applicable theory that goes into it,” said Hutton. “Those are the things I stress in the classroom, and rely on in the field.”
In addition to The Other Side, the Toronto-based director has experience working on long-form documentaries, music videos, commercials, museum installations, reality TV and high-end corporate videos. His directing projects include Til Debt Do Us Part, Outlaw In-Laws and Rabbit Fall.
