Electronics/Electrical Engineering coordinators Stefane Filion and Sarah Rouillier got to live a sailor’s life as they represented NC at the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre Influencer Event at CFB Halifax from Sept. 30 – Oct. 3.

The event brought together educators from across the country to learn about entry plans, employment types, occupations and opportunities in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

While visiting Halifax, Filion and Rouillier were able to tour the Fleet Diving Unit, Navy Fleet School, the Damage Control Division, the Air Force facilities at 12 Wing Shearwater and the submarine trainer, and participate in simulation exercises ranging from submerging a submarine, navigating a ship and fighting fires and flooding.

The group also heard from CAF members with a variety of educational and personal backgrounds. “Seeing the diversity in the roles and opportunities of our armed forces was inspiring and I believe that it is definitely something that our new graduates should consider,” said Rouillier. “Entering the CAF with a college diploma gives our students an advantage to gain experience in disciplines in which they have already studied.”

Students in NC’s School of Technology gain many transferable skills and fundamentals that make them well-prepared for a wide variety of roles int he modern CAF. From courses on radar, power distribution and even automation, the technical aspects of the CAF align greatly with what students learn in class. Many CAF members come to NC to enhance their own skills through the Electronics Engineering Technician program.

“It was incredible to see first hand what our men and women in the Canadian forces do on a daily basis. There are so many exciting opportunities for college students with skilled knowledge to join the forces to gain specialized training while visiting the world,” said Filion.
