The NOTL Local profiled NC alumna Karen Hett (Environmental Technician – Field and Laboratory program, 2005) in honour of International Women’s Day. The feature is part of a seven-part series highlighting local women shaping the future of agriculture across Niagara. The series also recognizes the United Nations’ designation of 2026 as the Year of the Female Farmer.
The article focuses on Hett’s career as grower relations manager with Arterra Wines Canada. Over her 22 years with the company, she has taken on a variety of roles and now works closely with about 90 grape-growing families across the region, supporting them from planting and harvest.
The story also highlights how Hett’s path into viticulture began almost by accident. After enrolling in NC’s Environmental Field and Laboratory Technician program, she secured a co-op placement scouting orchards and vineyards for pests and disease — an experience that helped launch her career in the industry.
