The NOTL Local released an article on spring gardening tips and included photos from a trip to NC’s Teaching Greenhouse, showcasing the flowers and plans involved.
Jennifer Laverty, Horticultural Technician in the School of Environment and Horticulture at Niagara College, explains in the article why the snowy winter will likely mean a great spring garden.
“Snow cover is actually really good for garden beds,” she said. “It’s a great insulator. Two winters ago, when we had no snow, we had a lot of dying plants. They didn’t get that dormancy period they needed. They didn’t get their chill hours so that they could be productive the next season. So, yes, this has been colder than we normally experience in Niagara, but it is beneficial.”
