Wesley Ducharme has caught the eye of gaming giant Ubisoft Canada, after the third year Game Development student won the company’s Programming apprenticeship at the game development company’s 2018 NXT Showcase.

The Showcase is an annual competition designed to help kick-start the careers of Ontario game development students in the industry by awarding apprenticeships to competition winners. In 2018, students from 23 schools throughout the province competed to win a summer apprenticeship in Animation, Concept Art, Modelling or Programming at the Ubisoft Toronto studio.

Ducharme is one of four winners from across the province who will get the chance to experience on-the-job education at Ubisoft, a household name in the game development industry. He and the other winning students will make the transition from student to game developer in the coming weeks through an apprenticeship at the studio, where they will work with some of the industry’s top talent creating AAA open world video games.

“The NC Game Development program provides students with a strong foundation in the three major disciplines of game development; programming, art and design.  Wes took that programming foundation and amplified it with energy, ambition and commitment,” said Rick Goertz, Game Development program coordinator. “The passion he demonstrated in his NXT competition entry was recognized and well rewarded.”

The artwork from the finalists will remain on display at Ubisoft Toronto in the studio’s public gallery space.
