Niagara College has a new Animals on Campus Policy and Procedure, now available here. This Policy provides clear guidelines for students, employees, and visitors to help ensure a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment across all campuses.
The Policy outlines:
- The specific circumstances under which animals are permitted inside campus buildings.
- The roles and responsibilities of animal handlers.
- Procedures for enforcement and how to report violations.
Approved animals, with the proper certification, include:
- Guide Dogs
- Police Dogs
- Service Animals
- Service Animals in Training
- Support Animals
- Therapy Animals
These specially trained animals play vital roles in enhancing safety, independence, and emotional well-being for the individuals and communities they serve.
Handlers of approved animals must maintain control at all times. Animals must be leashed, well-behaved, and properly cared for, in accordance with the Policy.
To help support the implementation of this Policy, the Centre for Academic Excellence is developing a faculty and staff resource on best practices for interacting with students who use service animals. This will be available on Brightspace in the fall.
Campus Safety is available to assist with any concerns related to policy violations or animal handler responsibilities within Niagara College buildings and facilities.
