David Dioszegi, Dario Spiteri and Jill Kosior are pictured at the Scotiabank Vanier Marketing Case Competition awards gala on the evening of March 1, where it was announced that the NC team was selected as a finalist.

They faced the best and brightest Business Administration students from across Canada and came out shining.

A team of NC Business Administration – Marketing students secured a place in the finals at the Scotiabank Vanier College National Marketing Case Competition February 28-March 2. The event drew 24 teams of Business Administration students from colleges and CEGEPs Business Administration across Canada to compete in Montreal for the 20th year of the competition.

NC’s team was among six teams to advance to the finals after the first round of intense competition.

Terri Champion, Business Administration Marketing Program Coordinator and team coach, noted that making it to the finals at a national event was an incredible accomplishment and she was proud of the students.

“Our team’s presentation on Saturday was very well attended – and I heard from more than a few coaches from Western and Eastern Canada colleges that they were told to ‘be sure to go and watch the Niagara team,'” she said.

“We were thrilled to hear Niagara’s name called to the stage on Saturday evening during the formal dinner to receive our award as one of the six finalists selected to compete on Sunday. It was a proud moment for sure and well deserved.”

NC’s team included third-year students Dario Spiteri and Jillian Kosior and second-year student David Dioszegi.

“All three of these students demonstrated an incredible amount of dedication, teamwork and passion for learning in the months of training that led up to this competition. It was a pleasure to coach them and to see them represent Niagara College on a national level.”

Spiteri said he was extremely proud of his team, and that they became finalists. He was even prouder of the quality of the strategies they put forward.

“As a student, these challenges are beneficial because they push the boundaries of what you believe you are capable of,” he said. “I am so grateful to have connected with so many amazing students from around the country as well.”

Dioszegi noted that participating in the competition has helped him academically.

“I learned how to make smart decisions when it comes to marketing plans and it also forced us to communicate as a team and consider every angle.” said Dioszegi. “The competition puts our learned skills into real-world application and leaves us with perspective that we can pull from anytime we do anything marketing related.”

Champion noted that the three students have participated in numerous client-based projects through their marketing courses, and have competed at the Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition.

All three students are also juggling jobs on top of it all. Spiteri and Kosior were already offered full-time positions – for after graduation – by their co-op employers and continue working through their studies, while Dioszegi works as a Business Research Assistant with NC’s Research and Innovation division and plans to continue in the role for his upcoming co-op term.

“I believe that this experience, like many of the work integrated learning opportunities we provide our students, plays a critical role in helping our graduates reach their true potential and set them on a path to career success,” she said. “Through these experiences they are able to gain confidence and knowledge that make them more competitive in today’s job market.”
