Niagara College is proud to contribute to the advancement of global education by sharing its expertise and fostering international collaboration.
Recently, Niagara College’s Institute for Global Education and Training hosted 29 distinguished higher education lecturers and administrators from Indonesia, who participated in NC’s Leadership in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Program.
Developed in partnership with Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (MoECRT), this transformative program was held from November 17-30, 2024. By focusing on advancing the academic management and leadership capacities of lecturers, the program aimed to elevate teaching and learning standards to meet and exceed international inclusivity benchmarks while addressing the evolving demands of the labour market.
Over the two-week program, these educators engaged in comprehensive training at Niagara College’s Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The program, delivered entirely in-person, encompassed 40 hours of classroom instruction. The curriculum covered key areas such as Competency-Based Education and Training, Inclusive TVET Leadership, and Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century.
“The training was a transformative experience, where we discovered powerful practices to enhance student engagement and embrace a student-centred approach and gained a deep understanding of how vital it is to connect educational institutions with industry needs,” said Cahya Fajar Budi Hartanto, Director of Politeknik Bumi Akpelni. “These insights have truly elevated the learning experience and inspired me to drive meaningful change at my campus and, hopefully, across all TVET institutions in Indonesia.”
Six subject matter experts from Niagara College delivered the program: Holly Catalfamo, Part-Time Faculty at the School of Business & Management Studies; Amy Proulx, Professor at the School of Food & Wine Sciences; Taylor Venneri, English as a Second Language (ESL) Testing Facilitator at the School of English Language Studies; Laura Clemente D’Agostino, Part-Time Faculty at the School of English Language Studies; Candace Rempel, Associate Director of Academic Quality at the Centre for Academic Excellence; and Becky Sciliberto, Manager of Global Compliance & Reporting.
Beyond the classroom
This immersive program extended beyond the classroom. Participants toured Niagara College’s unique Learning Enterprises and Applied Research & Innovation Centres and participated in industry site visits, interactive tours, and cultural explorations of Niagara Falls, Toronto, and the broader Niagara Region.
Building on this transformative experience, the program has set the stage for future collaboration. “The teaching methods are interactive, engaging, and deeply inspiring. I look forward to building a lasting partnership with Niagara College to explore countless opportunities for mutual growth,” added Hartanto.
The delivery of this program reinforces NC’s commitment to empowering educators around the world and strengthening ties with global partners.
