On November 7, Emily Vukovic from CHCH toured Niagara College to explore a variety of program offerings and provide a sneak peek of what people can expect at the NC Fall Open House held on November 9 at both College campuses.
Vukovic visited the Acting for Film and Digital Media Program students and interviewed Program Coordinator and Professor, Lori Ravensborg. Ravensborg discussed the two-year program that focuses on the skills and tools of actors and also the entrepreneurial side, including editing and screenwriting classes, behind-the-camera tools, and an understanding of the industry as a whole. The segment features acting students performing a warm-up exercise in the classroom where Ravensborg explains that open house attendees can expect to see students performing a scene in the acting lab, working in the voice booth, and learn more about the program at an information session at 10:30 a.m.
The segment also showcases an NC Nursing lab, where Vukovic interviewed Mark Gruber, a professor in the School of Nursing and Personal Support Worker program. Nursing and PSW students are shown working on mannequins in the simulation labs, assessing lung sounds, muscle strength, and mobility, and how they gain these practical skills in a real-world setting at the College.
In the Electrical Engineering lab, Frank Dechellis, professor in the School of Technology, discusses the job opportunities in the field, explaining that students can find roles in utilities, power quality, power generation, and energy control — described by Vukovic as “well-paying, secure jobs.”
The final stop on the tour featured the Motive Power Technician program. Program Coordinator Wayne Toth discussed the types of vehicles in the automotive labs, including electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and a hydrogen car. He explains how these vehicles, along with various co-op opportunities, help students become workplace-ready and acquire the knowledge of where the future of car mechanics is heading.
