Niagara College honoured with Canada 150 Award

Niagara College was recognized with a Canada 150 Award from Niagara Centre MP Vance Badawey.

Held at the Port Colborne Sports Complex on February 18, the awards ceremony was held as a final celebration to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial and recognize 75 community leaders – both individuals and organizations – from various sectors in Niagara Centre who have contributed to making the region and the country what it is today.

“Thank you, Niagara College, for teaching the next great Canadians, and nurturing many role models for Canada,” said Badawey.

Niagara College was applauded for its leadership in applied education and training, and for its history of consistently ranking among Ontario’s top colleges for student satisfaction. It was noted that under the leadership of Dan Patterson, who has been college president since 1995, NC has doubled its enrollment to 10,000 full-time students in more than 100 programs with an operating budget of over $145 million, as well as 15,000 part-time students each year, who study in more than 600 credit, vocational, and general interest programs.

The ceremony also highlighted the College’s 50th year anniversary in 2017 and how, the College has become a regional college with global reach.  The College’s current growth was also mentioned, including its $50-million campus redevelopment project to further modernize learning spaces and significantly enhance the student  experience.

College president Dan Patterson noted that Niagara College was honoured to accept a Canada 150 award.

“We take great pride in our 50-year history and the key role we have played in the economic development of the Niagara region, as well as in our expanding global reach,” said Patterson.

“Niagara College graduates are succeeding and leading in every sector of our economy,  and  we look forward to continuing our leadership role in the future through our pre-emptive approach to applied education.”

Patrick Robson, advisor to the president, and professor of Environmental Management and Assessment, attended the event and accepted the award on behalf of Niagara College.
