Professor Paul Willie's new hospitality textbook has been released.

Paul Willie has authored a new textbook for Hospitality training which will be used at NC and beyond: A Guide to Hospitality Management in Canada.

The new textbook was published by Edmond Publishing in February 2024.

It’s the fourth textbook project for Willie, who has been teaching financial management at NC for 20 years, following Hospitality Financial Management, First Canadian Edition (2009), 2) Budgeting for Special Events (2012), 3) A Guide to Hospitality and Tourism Law in Canada (2021), and A Guide to Hospitality Financial Management in Canada (2024). He is currently working on the second edition of the law textbook (expected in 2025).

Willie began working on the new hospitality financial management textbook in late 2021.

“I had just finished the law textbook project and expressed the need for a new finance textbook to my current publisher (Emond) in Toronto,” he recalled.

Since the last Canadian hospitality financial management textbook (which he authored) was published in 2009, Willie recognized that his textbook was old and out of print and he expressed his interest in authoring an updated textbook, which received positive feedback from the publisher.

“It was important to me to ensure the students have access to a current, interesting, relevant, and Canadian content focused finance textbook,” he said.

This textbook will be used for the hospitality degree and post grad programs at Niagara College.

The textbook will also be used at George Brown College as well as other colleges and universities across Canada that offer a hospitality management program.

“I am thankful the feedback received from the sales reps at Emond Publications has been super positive,” he said. “This textbook will be in high demand for a few years.

“I am also very thankful to Niagara College Professors Jay Perry and Philip Wessels, George Brown Professor Byran Bessner, and Chef Mark Picone who made valuable contributions to the project.”

Willie started working in the industry at the historic Hotel Macdonald (Edmonton, Alberta) at the age of 15 (as a banquet waiter) and his first finance related position was with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. Since then, he hascontinued to be involved in the industry.

“I enjoy sharing my many years of experience and knowledge with our Niagara College students very much,” he said. “My hope is for the students to fall in love with the hospitality industry and embrace the many adventures that will lie ahead.”
