The Green Circle Salon program recognizes sustainability efforts to recycle, recover, and repurpose salon waste.

For the second year, the Niagara College Teaching Salon received Green Circle Salons certification for their commitment to an extensive waste recycling system and education program for students in NC’s Hairstyling program.

“The program has become second nature for both faculty and students,” said Merinda Arcidiacono, Program Coordinator of the Hairstyling program.

Approximately 862 pounds of solid and liquid waste was diverted, totaling 95 per cent of the waste – including hair clippings, excess hair colour, aluminum foil, single use items, and PPE waste – produced by the Teaching Salon.

Of all the waste, 873 pounds of metal was recycled which could help create nearly 250 bicycles.

Arcidiacono says that the Green Circle program has become “well integrated” into the curriculum and salon operations.

“We have incorporated a recycling checklist for students in every class to ensure that all materials are properly sorted and recycled,” said Arcidiacono.

In addition, students register with Green Circle as part of their Ethics class, completing all modules and quizzes to receive certification as stylists.

“Students can add their Green Circle certification to their professional portfolios, which is a valuable asset when job searching,” said Arcidiacono.

Arcidiacono say salon clients are supportive of the program, learning from students about how products are recycled, how they are repurposed, and the overall impact.

NC Hairstyling alum have become sustainability ambassadors in the community.

“I have heard from Niagara College alum that when they enter salons that do not currently use Green Circle, they are able to educate their employers and help initiate the sustainability program within those salons,” Arcidiacono. “This speaks strongly to the long-term impact of the education they receive here.”

The initiative continues to support the College’s Sustainability Plan and NC’s commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Partnership for the Goals.
