NC students in health-related programs have an opportunity to apply for a sought-after summer scholarship with the Niagara Health Knowledge Institute (NHKI).
Applications are now open for the NHKI Niagara College Summer Student Research Scholarship, which offers a paid research-focused placement between May and August 2025.
Scholarship recipients will gain hands-on experience in the NHKI’s vibrant and growing research environment while developing valuable research skills, new networks and exposure to a community hospital research environment.
Valued at approximately $10,000, the award is open to students currently enrolled in a health-related program at NC in good academic standing. Students will be paid an hourly rate of $18 per hour plus vacation in lieu.
The selected student will work full-time (37.5 hours per week) alongside an NHKI researcher from May 1-August 1, 2025 to contribute to an existing research project.
“‘This is a wonderful opportunity for a student to immerse themselves in health research and to make new connections with academics and peers across a variety of different organizations,” said NC’s Dean, Health Sciences, Sinéad McElhone.
The scholarship is one of four offered this year by the NHKI for selected students to participate in a research-focused placement between May and August 2025. Building on last year’s success, the NHKI is once again partnering with NC, Brock University, and the Thrombosis Atherosclerosis Research Institute’s (TaARI) Liaw Lab to offer one scholarship each for undergraduate students enrolled in health-related programs. New this year, the NHKI is introducing a fourth scholarship in partnership with the University of Niagara Falls Canada.
“We’re thrilled to offer local college and university students the opportunity to work with our researchers again this summer,” said Elaina Orlando, NHKI Research Manager. “After the success of our first research scholarship cohort last year, we’re excited to welcome a new group of students who will bring their unique perspectives and skills to the NHKI.
“This program gives them the chance to contribute to research that will impact standards of healthcare and contribute to building research capacity in community hospitals.”
The NHKI actively participates in research and multi-centre clinical trials across various fields, including cardiology, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, hematology and transfusion medicine, infectious diseases, neurology, oncology and thrombosis. Its mission includes a strong commitment to improving the quality of patient care and building research capacity in community hospitals.
The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2025.
