Niagara College recognized its brightest students from around the world at the Winter 2024 International Student Awards Ceremony on April 4.

Each term, NC celebrates the positive impact of international students who demonstrate academic excellence and contribute to the College community through its International Student Awards. This winter, thanks to the generous contributions of NC’s supporters, 32 awards and over $61,500 in scholarships were given.

Originally from the Philippines, Recreation Therapy student Raymond Victorino was among the 12 international students awarded for earning the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) in their school of study.

“Receiving this award is a testament to the countless sacrifices I have made juggling part-time work and family responsibilities while pursuing my studies as a newcomer international student,” said Victorino, who earned a 96.50% GPA, the highest in the School of Community Services among international students. “This recognition reaffirms that no matter the challenges, it is never too late to pursue excellence and make a meaningful impact in our communities.”

NC President Sean Kennedy, and Vice President, International, Sean Coote, participated in the event held at The Core on the Welland Campus. Senior Director, International Students, Shawna Luey was the night’s master of ceremonies.

Twelve other students were recognized with Keith Segal – guard.me scholarships for their outstanding academic achievements. One student who received the award, funded by Guard.me, the provider of international student insurance coverage was General Arts and Science student Supriya Supriya, who maintained a GPA of 93.67%.

“The warm and inclusive community at NC, along with the friendly and positive attitude of the staff, helped alleviate my fear of navigating life in a foreign country without my family,” said Supriya, who is originally from India. “At NC, I quickly discovered a sense of belonging and a support system that made me feel at home. Winning this scholarship motivates me to give back to this community and continue striving for excellence.”

Two scholarships were new to the International Student Awards ceremony this term. Provided by the Ontario government, the Ontario Remembrance Scholarship and the Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship prioritize students impacted by international tragedies.

Originally from Nigeria, Computer Systems Technician – Network and Cloud Technologies student Mirabel Amiri was the recipient of the Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship.

“This scholarship not only provides financial assistance but also serves as a reminder of the importance of global solidarity and collaboration, especially in times of challenge and uncertainty,” said Amiri. “I am grateful for this invaluable opportunity and for standing in solidarity with Ukraine and its people.”

Originally from Peru, Business Administration-Supply Chain and Operations Management student Jerahmeel Massiel Rodriguez Ancajima accepted the Dr. Mary Kilmer Tchalekian Scholarship, given to a student with excellent academic performance who aims to make a difference upon returning to their country.

“Amazing things can happen with dedication, persistence and passion,” said Ancajima, who earned a 93.17% GPA. “Knowing that I am fulfilling my dreams and sowing the seeds for many more international students to come motivates me to continue striving for academic excellence, to keep dreaming big, and to give the best of myself in everything.”

During the evening, NC also awarded the Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) International Student Award. The award is offered to a student who displays academic excellence and who participates in extra-curricular and volunteer opportunities with NCSAC, enriching their student experience.

Additionally, NC awarded the Community Spirit Award in Memory of Isabel Hernandez Maltos, which is given to an international student in any NC English as a Second Language (ESL) or Post-Secondary program who exemplifies leadership and volunteering qualities at the College or in the community.
